๐Ÿ“ˆ Cycle Results MD only Sankey: URM/506/3.48

Post image

A cheeky little Sankey to give back to the community. My tangible advice is to take the necessary time to form a cohesive narrative between your ECs, life, medicine, and academic accomplishments; there is always a link, you just need to find it. Ask people to read over your drafts, and ask your LOR writers to add things specific to your narrative (connections between other ECs, traits that you are trying to highlight in your whole app, etc) Also, make sure to form healthy coping mechanisms and establish strong relationships with your peers and mentors!

Here is some additional advice, unsolicited and easier said after the fact. RELAX!! Enjoy your time in undergrad, gap years, etc... maybe even party a little. The goal post of success is always moving, so take time to actually enjoy your life, gain some hobbies, make some mistakes, and breathe. You're all unique, you're all valuable, you're all enough!

Much love y'all

Some other notable things about my app:

  • Strong ties to Michigan
  • Rural background
  • Strong will to live

This is such good advice. The narrative part is underrated. Tying everything together makes a huge difference.
Also really appreciate the reminder to just live a little while going through all this. More posts like this please.

Congrats! Did you only have 100 hours of clinical non-shadowing hours? If so, wow, you are brave, sir!

COVID and time restraints due to my other responsibilities in undergrad caused me to need to get majority of my clinical hours in my gap year (the 100 is at the time of application submission). I was fortunate to get strong and direct patient interactions in a peds ER as my clinical hours with many stories to tell from it!

I hate to say this but this is the second one of these Iโ€™ve seen with MCAT below 507, no publications, and low GPA. Both were URM?

Your research hours are impressive but honestly Iโ€™m curious your thoughts as to how much your URM/SES status played into your 10 interview invites?

Oh man, I don't know... I honestly forgot to ask ADCOMS how many spots they had available for broke black boys. /s

But seriously, in this political climate, I'd have to say it didn't give me a great boost in terms of admissions, but who am I to say? I did, however, shape my school list to match my narrative, culture, ECs, and upbringing. I didn't include this in the initial post, but I have a pending publication, multiple national conference presentations, and very strong leadership positions (socially, academically, and athletically). I also held multiple part-time employment positions during undergrad, on top of my academic and athletic responsibilities. So maybe they peeped the discipline and resilience, idrk though. Hope that helped! :)

Yeah it does - what was your narrative if you donโ€™t mind me asking?
