Covid-19 Denialism / Anti-science comments or posts will be removed and you will be banned without warning
This should fall under simple common sense and decency, but apparently we have a small but vocal segment of our user base lacking both (or they are trolls or bots). Posting or commenting Covid-19 denialism, or anti-science comments, etc, will result in a ban without warning.
Please help by reporting anti-science comments or posts. Thank you!

Surprised by Police Presence
Visiting for a long weekend and enjoying Rapid City area but we are staying downtown and the police presence night and day has been mind bogglingly heavy compared to other towns this size.
I donāt have feelings about it either way, but was wondering if this is normal because of tourism and visitors or panhandling, etc or if there is something happening I donāt know about, lol.

Questions about living in Rapid
ND born and raised. Been in AZ for two years. Have no desire to go back to ND, been thinking about the Black Hills. All I ever hear about is how bad the crime is. What happened?? Used to vacation down there as a kid a lot.

MISSING: Savannah Standing Bear
Here is a statement from the family: ā On March 24, 2025, Savannah Standing Bearās mother said goodnight to her daughter, to wake up on the 25th to information that Savannah left the house at 6am with two friends. No family member has seen or heard from Savannah since. It is extremely out of character for her to go more than a day without contacting her mom. There is a rumored sighting in North Rapid City.ā Since April 1, 2025, The Rosebud Sioux Tribe Criminal Investigators, Game Fish and Parks, White Buffalo Calf Society, Mission Fire and Rescue, Tokala Inanjayo, EPP program, drones, horses, dogs, and community members on foot have been searching for Savannah in Parmelee to no avail. We are hoping that community members in Rapid City and Sioux Falls can keep their eyes peeled, and that local news outlets can cover her case in hopes we will find her safe.

What's up with Einstein Bros?
Looks closed the past few days and Google Maps says temporarily closed...what's the deal?
Edit: curiosity got the better of me, drove past the door and read the sign, says they're short staffed and will reopen in the future.

Cancelled health programs/services due to funding cuts?
Hi everyone, my name is Arielle Zionts, I'm a rural health journalist for KFF Health News, a national nonprofit media outlet. I live in Rapid City.
Have you heard of any organization that's had to cancel a health-related program/project after losing federal funding? We are curious if any funding cuts have led to a cut in direct services to people.
DSS and DOH confirmed to me that they've had some grants cancelled. That funding was then subawarded to organizations. Here are the names of the federal grants:
- Substance Abuse,Prevention and Treatment Block Grant. #B08TI083967.
- Mental Health Block Grant. #B09SM085344.
- Epidemiology and Laboratory Capacity for Prevention and Control of Emerging Infectious Diseases (ELC). #CK19-1904.
- Immunization and Vaccines for Children. #CDC-RFA-IP19-1901.
- National Initiative to Address COVID-19 Health Disparities Among Populations at High-Risk and Underserved, Including Racial and Ethnic Minority Populations and Rural Communities.
Thank you!
Arielle

South Dakota Roots survey results
Thank you again to everyone who participated in the South Dakota Roots Migration Survey I shared last month. I wanted to follow up with some of the highlights for anyone who may be interested:
The survey got 732 complete responses, including at least one response from 62 of SD's 66 counties. Ages ranged from 19 to 101 (although the second highest age was 88).
For those who have stayed in SD, 67.8% chose "I enjoy living in SD" as one of their deciding factors (rural percentage was 77.4% compared to 56.9% of urban!). āI have stayed to live near familyā was a close second chosen by 67.2% of stayers. āI like the landscape/natural environmentsā was third with 56%.
58.4% of stayers plan to remain in SD ā quite a bit higher among rural respondents.
For those that left the state, 51.2% chose "they can earn more money outside of SD," 45.2% selected "My work is located outside SD," and 36.9% selected āpolitical environment.ā
83.3% of leavers still return to visit family (85.5% of total respondents have family living in SD).
61.3% of leavers selected "yes" when asked if they felt homesick for South Dakota.
48.8% of returnees chose "I missed my family" as one of the factors in their decisions to move back to SD after being away for more than a year.
57.2% of returnees (higher for those who returned to rural communities) said that they plan to remain in the state.
Just a small selection here. If you're interested in more or have any questions I may be able to answer, please do reach out to me.
Thanks again to all who helped!

West side: Anyone using 5g WiFi as primary, home internet?
My apartment complex is strictly BluePeak and I've had issues recently with it dropping service for a couple of minutes at a time. (Enough to kill your Citrix session but not enough time to screw with the up-time statistics they use for advertising. :/ ). I would appreciate any feedback on the use of a dedicated hot spot. I know location is going to be a huge factor but I was also curious if you ran into any firewall issues, where the ISP was blocking specific ports? (I know AT&T blocks one of the ports you need to run the NAT type Nintendo wants). Thanks in advance!

Hi everyone! My family and I will be visiting the area in July, we are wanting to rent a travel trailer for our stay at a campsite about 30 mins outside of Rapid City! What are your recommendations for finding a rental? Bonus points if delivery to the campsite is available! Thanks so much!
