I have a neighbor that every dog owner in the area that regularly walks knows pretty well. She's often in her garage with the door open and has always had a stash of dog treats ready for all the dogs (and all the dogs love her). When I first met her like 20 years ago, she was building dollhouses (I'm talking museum quality doll houses). Over the years she changed hobbies a few times, lately she mostly does puzzles.
Just over 4 years ago she also finally adopted her own dog.. she got a "Forever foster" via Frosted Faces, which is what allows her to have a dog since she didn't think she could ever afford the cost (mostly for the vet bills vs the food, which she pretty much already had).
She's one of the very few people in the area that my current dog not only trusts, but will run right up to. Granted it took 7 visits in a 2 week period and she had to slowly build up said trust, but after that now my dog loves to visit her.

I have a neighbor like that too! He's facilitated a lot of relationships with my neighbors because my kids always want to go say hi to all the visiting dogs.

Yeah, same here. I just met another neighbor and her kid this morning while we were saying hi and my dog was getting treats.
I've met quite a few people from the neighborhood in her garage.. sad thing is I'm really bad with remembering names, but for some reason, I tend to remember the dog's names.

We buried my mother with a bag Pupperoni's in her casket at her request.
She didn't want to be buried with the jewelry my father gave her over the years, she didn't care what she she was wearing, she just wanted to make sure she had treats in case there was an afterlife and she met some dogs there.

😭 sorry for your loss. Your mom was a good hearted person. My mom passed 2023 and I miss her more each day. When I die I'm going to be buried with churu squeeze treats for cats for all 6 of my childhood cats. I was in 2nd grade when I discovered a calico named Lady and her 4 newborns just hours old. Reluctant my mom and I negotiated I can keep them for one night only as long as my dad didn't find out and they would have to be gone by the time Dad got home from work the following day. I was 27 years old when the last cat died ( Lady's mini-me the only calico of the litter) We kept them all and even adopted a stray tuxedo along the way.

That is how I see myself in 15 years. As I get older I have a terrifying thought where my dogs would end up when I kick the bucket. This situation has caused such an impact. Back in 2010 when my kid was 4 I almost adopted a dog (bull terrier mix). Wife didn’t grow up with dogs. The dog’s situation was that the owner passed away and the dog was surrendered to the animal shelter. During the time we spent with the dog my wife asked the volunteer if we would be able to take care of the dog and her answer was “your husband, yes with out a doubt…. You? No”. So we didn’t adopt the dog. 6 months later I adopted a lab mix but always went to the shelter to look at dogs. I saw that the people that adopted the dog returned it. She was so stressed and thought it would be fun to jump at people when they were looking at her. Shelter ended up putting her down. Sooo I don’t want my dogs to go through that. After my current dogs I’ll be adopting elderly dogs or just walk around with treats and give them out just like this gentleman.

If you're a local.. when you're there/ready, check out Frosted faces which specializes in older dogs with older people.

Love this guy. He really needs to hang out at Grape St dog park. Best dog park in San Diego.

Nice to see a dog positive post here. The ones complaining of dogs have gotten old.

This Halloween I was with family and went trick or treating with my little niece and nephew. I took advantage and took my dog on the walk. There were so many people also giving out dog treats! It was so wholesome and nice, I'm almost mad at myself for not thinking about it. It's definitely a tradition I will continue myself.
My dog was absolutely ecstatic, she was so scared of all the people in costume but the snacks had her so excited to keep walking searching for treats.

So I’ve always had mixed feelings about this, what are your guys thoughts. Some random person giving your dog treats even though you don’t know them and don’t know what he’s giving our pups

As long as they ask the owner before giving treats, I'm fine with it, I've said no to people offering before at dog parks and they never seem to be offended

You can just say "no, thank you." My dog has pancreatitis so he's on a very strict diet and can't accept treats like that. I would be grateful for the offer and politely decline. I think it's highly unlikely that someone sitting out in the open, in broad daylight, with people filming him, is up to something malicious.

He’s a nice dude and my dogs spot him from a block away then drag me over for treats. If you’re worried about what someone else is handing out just carry your own treats and hand them a few to give to your dog.🐶 🐕🦮

Just talk to the guy. Have a real human conversation. If he is psycho then move on, but he seems genuinely interested in interacting with the dogs and their owners. This a priori distrust and fear of each other is what's fucked about our society.

My guess is (based upon how my neighbor was) is likely he really likes dogs but, for whatever reason, he can't have one of his own.

Yeah I hate that this is something we’ve got to worry about, even if they’re super friendly and seem genuine you just never know if they’ve done something to the treats beforehand

He’s got the bag right there so you know what he is feeding. Especially with big dogs, a little treat isn’t going to affect their diet/appetite much at all. Now with a 10-lb chihuahua, it might be different. But I would absolutely let him love on my dog a little!

u/AbleMonkeyBrain Feb 19 '25
He might take the “no thank you” kindly. As long as he gets to pet your dog.

Also, having driven The Strand multiple times, it’s super annoying when someone stops and blocks traffic for stupid reasons. Letting a stranger feed and love on your pup is a stupid reason in my book.

There’s plenty of space where he sits. What’s your rush anyway? It’s the Strand, slow down and chill.

Aren’t dog treats actually really not good for dogs? Need a vet to chime in here
3
u/AnyJamesBookerFans Feb 19 '25
It's like human treats. Ok if they are enjoyed every now and then, bad if you're eating them often.
2
u/uberklaus15 Feb 18 '25
I'm not a vet, but my vet assured me they're absolutely fine as long as they're given in relatively small quantities. Surely some treats are inherently unhealthy, but no, they're not categorically bad. As long as treats are a small fraction of their overall intake, there's no issue.

I left a bag of pupperoni sticks for my dog on the dining room table once as a kid and my dad ate them. Relieved that this gentlemen lets the dogs have them. My dad said they weren't very good.
