Health After the US overturned Roe v Wade, permanent contraception surged among young adults living in states likely to ban abortion, new research found. Compared to May 2022, August 2022 saw 95% more vasectomies and 70% more tubal sterilizations performed on people between the ages of 19 and 26.

Damn, that's a huge jump. Looks like people are taking control of their reproductive futures in the face of restrictive laws.

It's huge because the number is small. If you follow the links the increase was 58 more tubes tied and 27 more vasectomies over the course of a year.

Always be suspicious of large percentage gains cited somewhere. Like when someone claims they have the fastest growing customer base that jumped 500% last year but they went from 2 customers to 10.

That seems insanely underreported to me. I was 27 so I just missed being included in this study but I know I wasn't the only person to jump to be sterilized by far

The data set they used was pulled from a network of hospitals and the actual number of procedures coded.

Relatively yes, but statistically not really. The vast majority of people have vasectomies/tubal ligations between 35 and 37, so the flat increase is quite minor, likely measured in four or at most five digits.

If you follow the links it was 58 and 27 procedures.

Relative risk v actual risk strikes every time.

An unwanted pregnancy derails an education and a career. That’s why the Right is so set on them being more common. Getting women back into the kitchen is why they like the 50’s so much. There are more women than men in healthcare and most of their jobs require higher education that is rigorous and immersive. Tough to do with a kid on your hip.

Then why do you strive to ban the pill?

Are you supportive of easily and widely accessible birth control and mandatory comprehensive sex education in schools?

At what point does abortion become acceptable? Does the mother have to become septic before she can have an abortion? Is abortion still not okay in cases of rape? If someone was using north control and it fails, should they have access to abortion? At what point does a women deserve to lose the right to decide who is and isn’t allowed inside of her?

Have you asked yourself these questions? Really nailed down your beliefs?

Are you saying you personally are okay with forcing a woman to have someone inside of her against her will? That is a-okay with you?

I am never going to be okay with “banning elective abortions” because A) a fetus is not a person or a baby B) women never ever lose the right to bodily autonomy C) consent is not transferrable. Consent to one thing is not the same as consent to a completely different thing. And consent to one person inside of you is not consent to a totally different person inside of you (if you want to believe a fetus is a person). D) the right to life doesn’t supercede the right to bodily autonomy.

Abortion should only be a decision between the pregnant person and their doctor. It should safe, legal and rare. There should be free birth control that is easily accessible. There should be reduced stigma around sex. There should be comprehensive sex Ed in schools, as well as consent education.

How does a guy “lose his bodily autonomy” when he has sex????

Your people are pushing that, and more. Take a look at some of the rhetoric from your leadership and the bills they introduce in states around the country.

I find it hard to believe you are part of the political pro-life group and haven't heard about this.

Seems kind of coercive, though
