Hyperion and Fall of Hyperion are all time greats. Endymion duology is a solid read with a lot of good concepts and a lot of fun.
The most imaginative though by Simmon is Illium and Olympos. It's not up there with the storytelling of Hyperion, but some of the concepts are incredible and IMO well worth a read.

Is that book any good? I’ve got some audible credits lying around. The artwork looks amazing.

It’s a great book and an excellent series on the whole. I like its direct sequel just as much, entitled Fall of Hyperion. It was originally meant to be one 1,000 page novel but the publisher ended up cutting it into two 500 page novels so reading both is a must. The sequels after that are called Endymion and Rise of Endymion.

All right, you’ve convinced me lol, I’ll download the audiobook and listen to it while I drive. If it’s any good, maybe I’ll get the rest of the books after I finish the first one.

It's a classic. Hyperion + Fall is a must read and they're essentially one novel. Endymion is either a love it or hate it kinda thing, personally I loved it and it does wrap the story up.
Have fun.

I love the Hyperion books. I recommend them at every opportunity. I'm also one of the ones who hates the Endymion books. My reaction to both stories were so strong that it almost feels like cognitive dissonance.

I listened to all 4 while driving to work everyday. Couldn’t wait to get back into my truck to lost in that world.

That's why I felt like it was missing something I only read half the freaking book lol

Any good?!?! It's one of the most amazing sci-fi work in the history for me 🥰 my most favorite book ever...of course it's not complete without Fall of Hyperion and of course gotta add Endymion and Rise of Endymion

The religion stuff was all a bit too odd for me. But good series none the less.

I loved all the Catholic church storylines. Religion is always going to be the most important tool to control masses, so I wouldn't be surprised the Vatican involvement in the decision of the fate of humanity

I just read it recently. It was a great read. Little tough to start as it kind of just dumps you into the world with no ramp up, but it doesn't take long to hook you. I'd encourage to have the 2nd book ready when you're done as I'm currently waiting for it from the library and itching for it a bit, lol.

Currently reading the sequel and, as with the first book, every now and then find myself looking at the artwork for reference

It's my all-round favorite series! Simmons does a great job of slowly introducing the fictional tech jargon. It's all organically placed in the story like fictures in the setting, but becomes more and more relevant to the plot. By the end of the 4th book there are A few paragraphs that are just packed with world specific terms. It could read as total nonsense out of context. I found myself marveling at the fact that I understood it all effortlessly. I think that's evidence of GREAT sci-fi!

I'm just now finishing the Audible version and it's definitely good narration and the story comes highly recommended.

It's Canterbury Tales in space. Several vignettes of the characters heading toward a place.
It ends on cliffhanger. The second book starts right where the first ends. You really need both to get the whole story.

It's Canterbury Tales in space.
That's an exaggeration.
It uses the form of Canterbury Tales. It's much more than that.

Reddit falls all over itself to proclaim how great this book is but I found it to be just fine. Further to that the first book really cannot stand on it's own. As soon as I finished the first book I was quite disappointed with and immediately went looking for a sequel (I didn't know it existed at the time) because the first book really didn't have a complete story.

Hyperion and The Fall of Hyperion are very underrated in my opinion.

I disagree.
Mostly because the Hyperion Cantos is regarded as one of the masterpieces of science fiction.

Right. It's consistently, appropriately, rated as one of the best series of all time.

My hardcover is original and vintage.
But, alas, came as mail order The Hyperion Cantos in a two-volume-in-one book club set.

There's a 1st edition of fall of Hyperion on eBay for $185 if you want to finish the set. I'm not one to collect books but that series I would consider. Nice find.

Thanks for the info. I actually have the complete series in first edition. Fall of Hyperion only cost me $3, amazingly!

What an incredible sci-fi novel. If I remember correctly, Endymion spans over a thousand years. It’s the kind of story that gives you vertigo in the best way. A beautiful edition, no doubt about it. ❤️

That’s an incredible find! Wow. What does it look like under the dust jacket?
