Help: Beginner Filterless tank shrimps gathering at the top

Hello! I have an issue as per the title. Last time I posted I got a ton of help. We let the tank sit for a month and everything went well. Water parameters are normal. We have had the shrimps now for around a month and we think we can see eggs at one of them. However since a couple days they have been gathering at the top. Not all but it’s not their normal behaviour.

Is there anything I can/should do? Like I mentioned in the title the tank is filterless so I don’t know how to add oxygen.

Thank you for your help!

I'm about to get Neocaridina shrimp blue color, I think it's Blue Dream hopefully, I don't know very well but they seems like that to me. You can see some on the video of the seller, and he said the blue ones didn't appear well but they are pure blue color.

Anyway, main point is; how do I prepare them to be put on the tank? do I put them strightforward? or keep them on a plastic bag with some water floating on the tank for a while to get used to the temperature then release them? or what to do?

It looks like everything is good except for the PH level being between 7.2 - 7.6. I'm new to shrimp keeping and would love to be educated. Adding a pic of the test strip and bowl set up for convenience. Thanks everyone!

Help: Beginner RCS in 2 liter jar? need help.

Hi guys so recently I had established a tank with rcs and they have been thriving, a lot of them are now berried, and some just gave birth.

Quick question, I was planning to put one of the berried females in a 2 liter Jar. Is it possible that it would live without any aerator?

I am planning to use amazon soil as a substrate. some lava rock for my hardscape.

I am torn between about what plants to use. I have an abundance of Ambulia and an Anubia nana.
I also have a ton of Java ferns.

Which is better? Planting stems plants? Leaf plants? Or use Java moss or Xmas moss?
Need your advise.

Can I also put a lid on it tightly and have it as its own ecosystem?
I am planning to use water from my establish tank that the shrimp comes from.

Help: Beginner How to stop shrimp from climbing?

Post image
23 Upvotes

We had the filter closest to the left against the wall and a shrimp got into the filter. (I think it climbed first into the outtake overflow and then jumped into the intake and got sucked through.

I think he just climbed the plastic wall when there was a steam of water because I saw him trying, but could not really get close.

I’m really mad at myself for letting this happen. I thought I did everything, we had/have (I can’t find them) babies in the tank as well so that’s why there is a filter sponge in front of the intake. (We also have 2 very pregnant shrimp that I would love to keep their kids alive)

Any help would be greatly appreciated, I’m really upset/sad that I did this to him.

I think one may climb up the sponge but I don’t know a better way to prevent them from going into the intake. Thanks again for any help.

The first one that passed away was still blue in the morning when I pulled them out, the one I just found this morning is brown. Not sure what to do :( I’m getting my water tested today. It’s a planted tank with bio stratum for substrate.

Help: Beginner Shrimp (not tanks) Newbie Seeking Advice

Hey all,

My QT is cycled, grungy, and half-filled with java moss, and so I thought that some neocaridina would be cool. I casually read posts here and watched a dozen or so YouTube vids to prep myself, and then 5 weeks ago went to my LFS and came home with 7 Cherry Shrimp ("Skittles, I guess?"). Large and small red, large and small blue, three yellows.

I floated the bag for 2 hours before adding them in (since read that I should've used a drip acclimation), but unfortunately, the largest red died. Otherwise, the remaining 6 were happy and maybe three weeks ago I began to see (and freak out!) at the molted shells in the tank.

A rollercoaster: while I was overjoyed when I saw the largest blue was berried as of 9 days ago, I was crushed to see her lifeless on the bottom of the tank 2 hours ago. It's got me in a funk.

If anyone would be so kind, could you give me some feedback, or input here? Didn't want to continue this novella, but I'm happy to provide what information I can.

Help: Beginner Any help on my PH reading please?

Post image

Today’s the big day, my tank is cycled and ready for shrimp! All other readings are fine and plants are looking quite well - just some algae growth which I suppose is perfect for shrimp anyway!

I was originally intending on buying some crystal red shrimp but I know Caridina need a lower PH, was wondering what my reading is here? It looks to be around 7, and I believe it may be too high for Caridina.

If it’s too high I’m perfectly fine with grabbing some Neocaridina - was thinking blue bolts maybe?

All help is appreciated!

Need advice, my shrimp went MIA for 6 days. Turns out she was hiding in the filter (thank god, was so worried she’d died)! Anyway, it looks like she’s molted but since this is my first experience owning shrimp, I’m not 100% certain? I’ve attached before and after photos but the after photos are a bit blurry. Also worth mentioning that there’s absolutely no sign of the molt itself so idk. Thanks in advance 😄

Help: Beginner Slowly losing shrimp and not sure why

Hi I am new to the aquarium hobby (and especially shrimp care).

We have a 55 gallon tank with a number of tetras, mollies, and corydoras. We got 10 cherry red shrimp about 3 weeks ago and their numbers are slowly dwindling. We have ~5 still living. They were much more active and willing to hang out with the fish and snack initially but now they stay mostly hidden and there are some days I don’t really even see them at all. Water parameters are good - ammonia 0ppm, nitrite 0ppm, and nitrate 20ppm. We have very hard water though I haven’t actually tested it. So much that I’ve added seachem neutral regulator a number of times and the ph stays around 7.6. It’s a planted tank with vallisneria and Monte Carlo (still initial stages of just being planted).

I’m at a loss of why this is happening and don’t even know where to start so I can diagnose the issue. My understanding is that keeping the above parameters where they are coupled with the water temp floating around 74F, ensuring they have places to hide, and plenty of food to eat, that’s a good start.

We saw 1 exoskeleton and that leads me to believe molting was taking place for at least 1 of them. They were pretty young when purchased (assuming due to their size and not fully developed color when brought home).

Could it be bad genetics and outside my control? Or am I mishandling them? Happy to provide additional insight as needed to help identify the problem.

Help: Beginner Is my shrimp ok?

Hi everyone! This isn’t my first time keeping shrimp but it’s been a few years. Tonight, I found one of my blue velvets on its side in the tank? It was attached to some algae and what appeared to be fanning? Its back legs were kicking but the front legs were not. I moved the algae to make sure it wasn’t possibly stuck in there and the shrimp kind of just floated to the bottom :(. Not sure if it’s done for or if it’s something else. Water parameters appear to be normal as of right now and my other 7 shrimp are all healthy and acting normal! Thank you in advance for your help!

Help: Beginner Water Parameter help

I’m currently working on trying to get things set up to have my first shrimp tank. I haven’t had a lot of fish before though I’m familiar with quite specific requirements for animals because I own quite a few reptiles, and im pretty confident in my ability to be patient with getting things right.

I’m having a hard time finding the right general guidelines for water parameters. I’m looking at getting neos (specifically red crystals most likely). As of right now, I’m planning on filling the tank up (10g) with RO water because we have a water softener. Then that’ll be followed up with remineralizing it with salty shrimp, and using seachems acid buffer, alkaline buffer and stability. I’m also a little unclear on whether or not I should use a buffering substrate?

Other than that I just wanted to know if anyone had a general guideline for pH, GH, KH, TDS, etc. for neos.

Help: Beginner New shrimp molting within 24 hours of arrival into tank

Post image

I have a new tank 4.1g, I know a bit small for a new aquarium owner but the tank was gifted to me by an avid aquarium owner and I already have my eyes on an 11g. It’s been circulating with stable parameters for 3 weeks with some plants, surprise snails and driftwood. Yesterday I decided to add 9 shrimp. This morning I woke up to 1 molt and by noon today there was a second. I believe this red one (sorry for the not great photo) was the first to molt and is mostly stationary. The blue ones are swimming around like crazy stopping briefly to nibble. Is this normal? Did I catch 2 right at the molting faze or did I stress them out too much? I let them acclimate for an hour and a half and slowly added aquarium water to their bag before releasing them. I then added a quarter inch of water every hour or so to bring the water up about an inch to top off the tank. The water still seems stable this afternoon. I’m not overly concerned at the moment but maybe I should be?

Please let me know if this is normal behavior or if there is some additional action I should take. My cat would be crushed if his new favorite hobby stopped moving and I’d feel like a bad aquarium parent.

74 degrees +- a degree through the day 7.4 -7.6 ph 0ppm ammonia 24/7 day night light cycle not positive on the hours but it ramps up and down around sunrise and sunset and is off at night.

Help: Beginner Beginner question about taking vacations after establishing a tank

Hello! I do not have anything going yet as far as a shrimp tank. But I'm planning on starting one some time this year.

I've been researching and I know about fish-less cycling and quarantines and all that cool stuff. I know it will be a few months after I get the tank that I can start getting shrimp.

It made me wonder, though: when your tank is established and your scrimps are happy, what do you do about having time away from home? My family lives in another state, and probably every other year I'll go see them for a week or two. Do you use auto feeders? Is there anything else to consider? Has anyone had a successful time apart from their tank? Thank you!

I really like shrimp, they are so cute and goofy. I have some questions though. What stuff do you need in the tank, and can you keep a single shrimp and what’s the smallest shrimp species and finally is this to small for one shrimp? I have bigger I just want to get a size idea

Help: Beginner Shrimp for a hot climate

Hiya, for context, I have a Walstad 5gal tank and I am looking to add some critters to it. I like shrimp, but i live in a very hot area, the water temp ranges around 20C (on a cold day, around new years) and 30C (the rest of the year), but on average, the water temp is abt 25-29C. Is there any type of hardy shrimp that fits my current needs? (Temp wise or just in general) I dont have the resources to do any water testing though, so bear that in mind. I have heard of people adding like a fountain type pump to cool the water down, dont know how well that works. Anyways, cheers

PS: my current tank is semi outdoors, so the sun is quite direct. I am planning to redo my tank and relocate it someplace else before adding shrimp so the temp might not be as bad as stated.

Help: Beginner Looking to start a 20 gallon tank

Hi guys,

I'm looking to start a 20 gallon community tank that's primarily focused on neocaridinas. My partner would like to have some other fish to populate the upper portion of the tank.

I've never kept shrimp before (besides sea monkeys lol) and would like your suggestions.

I'm thinking of populating with; 10 neos 6-10 tetras or celestial pearl danios 2 mystery snails

Would the tank be able to support any other tank mates or should I focus on one school? Also, should I establish the fish or the shrimps first?

This project won't be started any time soon, I'm still in the process of researching, etc. So this isn't crucial.
