Genius Dove Nest Back for the 5th year in a row

This family of mourning doves is back with their nest on top of the light on the back of our house for the 5th year in a row.

I have pictures with the babies from previous years, if anyone is interested.

Curious to know if it’s likely to be the same parents returning, or instead their offspring? Or do various doves just have the same idea every year?

It is now their ancestral home.

Behold, hideous baby, everything the light touches is yours

I mean - it seems like there were 4 previous successful nesting seasons for this bird. I think that means it’s a pretty smart dove nest!

Yeah I was thinking the same. The other doves call her "genius" in sarcastic tones.

I'm interested in more bird pictures, I especially love mourning doves. Thank you for sharing your space with these little beauties of nature.

Here’s a favorite photo of mine, featuring one of the parents along with a nestling from back in 2021. They’re so sweet and beautiful and I’m so glad they chose our home for their nest. Looking forward to seeing the little ones again this year!

It’s really your fault because you keep renewing the lease

I have the same question. I have two separate nests outside and they are both occupied again🙂 wondering if it’s the same parents or some of last year’s babies🥰

It really is a brilliant spot. (PTP) At night the lights will provide warmth and no predators will spot them.

The average life of a mourning dove is about 2 years (Edit- in the wild- they are on everyone’s menu) so this one is Methuselah.

This might be true of the typical mourning dove, but they can live a dozen years or longer! These dove parents seem to have found a safe nesting spot, so maybe one or both are a bit more adept at keeping safe from predators than the typical dove? It’s also well built nest with lots of sticks and twigs, which suggests birds who take precaution! Who knows, maybe OP has been housing the next evolution of doves!

True - just that the odds are not in their favor.

This is a great shot. Mama just looks like a big blob over her baby. I can’t quite express how much this made my day!

There’s one building the poorest nest I’ve ever seen a bird build on our back door light. Everyday I walk out to a pile of sticks that fell. I mean do they even try?

Im used to the robins who would build nest in our front door wreath that had the most perfect tightly weaved nest. It was amazing to watch them. These clowns my goodness I feel so bad for them!
