Carnegie figured it out - if you want a decent legacy you have to give away a significant portion of your wealth to something that actually benefits people. Carnegie did it by funding beautiful Libraries (among other things). There are so many things Zuck could do for people if he really did care about public opinion and legacy. Otherwise he’ll always just be seen as some asshole who hordes his wealth and barely acted human.

It was successful. When I think of Carnegie I think of the university and libraries he built, not the thousands who died in the Johnstown Flood or Homestead Strike.

I’m just so sick and tired of big government forcing me to maintain my private club’s dam.

The Medici's figured out before him

Louis XVI... not so much

Louis XVI didn’t have enough money, that was a lot of the problem.

And they're all referred to as "Carnegie buildings" too.

In 1997 Gates donated $200m to libraries as well.

Why would he do that when he could use his enormous presources to undercut native Hawaiian residents out of their indigenous birthrights?

What about the $75m San Fransisco hospital they donated?

Agreed. The hospital they support is great but it’s largely because of his wife who I believe is a pediatrician.

With the wealth he has, and other multi billionaires have, I don’t see why you wouldn’t be doing things like endowments to perpetually support the entire countries food banks, buying rainforest and park land like Patagonia Co does, researching public health game changing global efforts like Gates’ foundation does, just endless things.

Didn't work too well for Bill Gates, antivaxxers even blame him for the virus
