TIL in 2010 Bill Murray & members of the Wu-Tang Clan were hanging out at SXSW when they entered the packed Shangri-La bar together, whereupon Murray spontaneously decided to hop over the bar & become a surprise temporary bartender who served generous tequila shots regardless of what patrons ordered

He also does basically a ton of other douche things

63

u/LacidOnex 2d ago

I'm going to regret this, but what's wrong with Bill?

190

u/Bearloom 2d ago

Threatening costars, groping a production assistant, racist comments towards Lucy Liu, generally being a violent alcoholic.

Many people he's worked with refer to him as The Murricane.

26

u/mistakes-were-mad-e 2d ago

What About Bob feud.

32

u/Bearloom 2d ago

Yeah, that fits under the "threatening costars" and "violent alcoholic" headers.

If it had ended at yelling at Richard Dreyfuss I'd call it fair - he too is known to be an ass - but going on to whip an ashtray at his head gets it counted.

35

u/MajorLazy 2d ago

Least surprising celebrity asshole to be honest

24

u/GM_Jedi7 2d ago

Yeah he's always had this rep since I was a kid in the 80s. Basically all the males from the og snl cast were known as obnoxious asses.

2

u/PatBenatari 2d ago

Garret Morris?

10

u/Bearloom 2d ago

I can't find anything bad about Garrett Morris or George Coe, and what I can find about Dan Aykroyd usually involves people pushing him into reacting.

It's just that people like Belushi, Chase, and Murray (not technically one of the originals, but close) made it seem like everyone was bad.

u/duaneap 2d ago

I mean there’s Chevy

2

u/lannister80 1d ago

Chevy is waaaaay worse than Bill.

1

u/NotNice4193 2d ago

I was surprised when I learned about him years ago. Wasn't surprised at all about Bill Murray. Something about him just seems like he'd be a prick

u/ShemsuHor91 2d ago

Just a couple days ago, he was doing an interview with Naomi Watts, who is married, and he forcibly grabbed her face and kissed her. It was really disturbing to see, and especially the way he acted about it afterward (thumbs up, "That was easy. That was way too easy." with a sleazy disgusting look on his face). He's getting reamed in the media over it the past couple days and in the comment sections wherever articles or videos about it are posted.

And coincidentally, I've also been seeing a lot of articles about lighthearted supposedly funny stuff he's done, which just happen to be popping up really frequently in the past couple days since that happened. In fact, when I Googled about the forced Naomi Watts kiss, there were a few articles about it and a slew of articles that had come out the same day about some completely unrelated comical thing or other that he had done in his past. Seems like somebody's running damage control.

I'm suspicious of this post itself for the same reason, really. Interesting timing for something like this to pop up on Reddit.

Read up on when he dumped Seth Green into a bin when he was a child because he sat in his chair.

19

u/LacidOnex 2d ago

Thank goodness the real discussion is in the comments. Ty for sharing. That's gross

12

u/filtersweep 2d ago

That was super creepy — nothing really ‘funny‘ about it at all. He deserves whatever consequences he gets.

6

u/mit-mit 2d ago

I thought the same about the timing!

2

u/SynthBeta 1d ago

It's not something popping up more randomly. It's because it was weirdly accepted back then.

u/_PM_ME_PANGOLINS_ 2d ago

He’s the kind of guy who will jump behind a bar and start serving everyone unmeasured tequila regardless of what they ordered.

40

u/Meecus570 2d ago

That's not really douchey though.

If you want a proper drink ask one of the actual bartenders, if you want some fun order from Bill Fuckin Murray

177

u/The_Flurr 2d ago

That's not really douchey though

It is to the bar.

107

u/_PM_ME_PANGOLINS_ 2d ago

It also is to the people not getting the drinks they want.

95

u/Malora_Sidewinder 2d ago

If I go up to a bar and tell Bill Murray that I want a whiskey sour, and he hands me a tequila, I knew what I was signing up for.

50

u/luftlande 2d ago

Well, they should have ordered from the bartender, not the movie star that jumped behind the bar and started serving people generous amounts of tequila.

-2

u/523bucketsofducks 2d ago

Bars have guest bartenders sometimes, they usually give you what you order though

9

u/bitterless 2d ago

Yes, and you would think after the first person who ordered a drink from Bill and received tequila anyone else ordered from Bill after would know the deal.

1

u/Legal_Expression3476 2d ago

You pay a lot of attention to the drinks random strangers get at the bar?

-1

u/IronMaskx 2d ago

Oh you mean not from the who who wasn't invited to be a bartender?

2

u/justinanimate 2d ago

"But I'm a recovering alcoholic..."

1

u/shoobsworth 2d ago

I wouldn’t speak for all bars

0

u/MotoMkali 2d ago

Presumably he pays for whatever he pours.

-23

u/Rockguy21 2d ago

Yeah I’m sure they’re gonna lose their shirts because a few people are getting the 2 dollar wholesale tequila shots for free instead of 40 bucks

18

u/The_Flurr 2d ago

You ever worked in a bar?

-3

u/bitterless 2d ago

Yes I have. I don't see why they are being downvoted. Serving cheap tequila for free from a celebrity would be worth the PR alone.

Serving free beers would be a totally different story.

128

u/LFCsota 2d ago

It's always douchey to go behind a bar and start serving drinks when you are not the bartender

7

u/TheMightyTywin 2d ago

I gotta disagree. Bill Murray can serve drinks at my bar any time

24

u/duaneap 2d ago

Might have a hard time explaining the till/stock at the end of the night.

-3

u/TheMightyTywin 2d ago

I’ll send an invoice to Murray

23

u/duaneap 2d ago

He will not pay it.

2

u/TheMightyTywin 2d ago

Maybe my insurance covers unforeseeable losses due to bill murray?

38

u/SpookySneakySquid 2d ago

Just because you’re a fan of him doesn’t make that not rude behavior lmao

19

u/MisterB78 2d ago

As a small business owner, fuck yes it’s a douchey thing to do, to the patrons and the staff and the business

17

u/wannaknowmyname 2d ago

What? Yea let's fuck with the margins of a local establishment, who cares about overserving, lack of certification, their liquor license, or inventory

-10

u/shoobsworth 2d ago

Life must be hard not knowing how to have fun

10

u/wannaknowmyname 2d ago

I'm considering everyone in the situation, probably harder on the people working than people already there to have fun

8

u/Jkj864781 2d ago

It’s the kind of person who doesn’t care what you want or asked for, you’re getting what he wants for you.

Sounds like a douche to me.

18

u/dude_is_melting 2 2d ago

If bill Murray stepped behind my bar and started giving away my alcohol I’d punch him in his douche face. That is incredibly douchey.

If anybody that wasn’t bill Murray did this would you find it charming?

1

u/shoobsworth 2d ago

No you wouldn’t.

You’d benefit financially from his visit, likely take photos, tell customers, etc

17

u/dude_is_melting 2 2d ago

You’re right, I probably wouldn’t assault an old creepy weirdo, but I’d remove him from my bar and ban him.

-15

u/shoobsworth 2d ago

You’d have to be a complete moron to assault a celebrity.

I also doubt you’d remove a star from your bar

22

u/dude_is_melting 2 2d ago

Again, if this was Elon musk doing this at my bar would you complain about me removing him? Try to get over your boner for this elderly creep and understand that money doesn’t give you permission to steal and trespass.

-7

u/shoobsworth 2d ago

Who says he’s stealing?

And Elon isn’t a celebrated comedian and actor who has entertained people for a couple generations.

Bad example

2

u/Three_Little_Birds_ 2d ago

Be realistic, you would not punch him lol and it’s not badass to say you would. If you follow proper process and ask him to leave/have him removed that would be reasonable and appropriate

3

u/kanga_lover 2d ago

lol and you go straight to violent assault. Get help for your anger issues.

6

u/wannaknowmyname 2d ago

A guy jumping over my bar to grab my product, getting in my employees way while he grabs bottles of alcohol unauthorized isn't a good first step. Punching isn't the answer but let's keep focus on the full picture

-1

u/JasonMraz4Life 2d ago

You are very badass.

-10

u/emp_Waifu_mugen 2d ago

the difference is that bill murray has enough money to buy your bar and if anything bad happens as a result of his joke it would be taken care of

11

u/dude_is_melting 2 2d ago

Does that make it okay? So if Elon musk came into my bar and stole all of my alcohol it would be okay if he paid for it later?

That’s just not how it works. If it was Elon would this story be charming? Or would you rightfully call it out as douchey rich jackass behavior?

6

u/Wonckay 2d ago

The difference is this person has enough self-respect to not let those with money feel entitled to treat others like toys because they can pay them off later.

-6

u/emp_Waifu_mugen 2d ago

yeah the self respect to assault someone for doing a bit that doesnt harm you at all and also makes you money big brain time

6

u/Cheese_Corn 2d ago

I would be happy to drink a drink if Bill fuckin Murray is pouring. That's something to tell your kids and grandkids about.

6

u/kawklee 2d ago edited 2d ago

Yeah exactly. Why do you go to a bar? To have fun.

So what's more fun, getting a drink you've ordered, or getting you didn't order but poured by Bill Murray and everyone around you is having a blast. I know which I'd prefer

2

u/Dic3dCarrots 2d ago

Ghost bustin ass, groundhog day Murry!

-3

u/zugtug 2d ago

It could be dangerous if the possibly already drunk person isn't paying attention and has either some sort of allergy or a bad history with tequila.

2

u/f8Negative 2d ago

Sounds fuckin great

25

u/Basket_475 2d ago

Like yesterday he sexual assaulted Naomi watts during an interview by forcing a kiss

-13

u/shoobsworth 2d ago

What matters is what Naomi has to say about it, not the outrage-addicted social media.

12

u/ShemsuHor91 2d ago edited 2d ago

Not really, if you actually watch the interview and how he did it. Even if she ends up being alright with it after the fact, the way he went about it gave her literally NO opportunity to consent or not. There's no way to describe it other than a forced kiss. He gripped her face in his hands and held it in place, and then did it before she could react at all. If she had wanted to say no, she wouldn't have had a chance or a way to stop him. Definitely doesn't help the way he said, "That was easy. That was way too easy," afterward. Really gross behavior.

-9

u/shoobsworth 2d ago

I’ve seen the video.

I highly doubt she cares, they’re promoting a movie together

9

u/Basket_475 2d ago

Noooo way bro. I’m not gonna pretend like we haven’t written rules in stone at this point over the last 8 years. Bill murray doesn’t get a pass for this just because he is bill murray. Also bro that’s insane. She can’t speak up because this is her livelihood and being a woman in Hollywood is hard enough. She doesn’t want to get branded as difficult

-7

u/shoobsworth 2d ago

She’s been in the business long enough to have cache. She can speak up if she wants, they’re both promoting a film they made together, I doubt she takes it as seriously as all the pearl clutchers on social media.

SHE decides if it’s ok, not YOU

2

u/Basket_475 2d ago

This is directly contrary to everything we have established in the me too movement and j have a feeling you are only saying it because it’s bill Murray

-1

u/shoobsworth 2d ago

I’m saying it because it matters how the woman feels, celebrity or not.

It doesn’t matter what pearl-clutching, delicate, whiny Redditors have to say.

The masses on social media don’t speak for her. They’re irrelevant.

23

u/no_more_jokes 2d ago

He recently shut down an entire movie production by sexually harassing/assaulting a much younger female staffer, he ended up paying a $100,000 settlement and the movie never ended up getting made

15

u/Bearloom 2d ago

That movie was also Aziz Ansari's attempt to come back after his "bad date" exile.

3

u/UglyInThMorning 1d ago

That article was so weird, the author was clearly looking for clout. I don’t like Aziz in most things he’s in but getting rolled up in that wave because of a hit piece like that was so shitty

39

u/RPGDesignatedPaladin 2d ago

He was super racist to Lucy Liu during the filming of Charlie’s Angels.

-9

u/LacidOnex 2d ago

Not Lucy Liu!

10

u/westernsociety 2d ago

Sexual harasses/assaults women. I mean he does it in a lot of his movies where it got laughs in the 80s. He's also generally a dick to work with (late, ignores calls, Geena Davis said he screamed at her in front of 300 ppl).

20

u/sumuji 2d ago

He's basically a huge asshole who's in character for the general public doing quirky stuff but a douchebag to people behind closed doors and to other people in the business.

15

u/KatDanger 2d ago

Basically, he’s a creep and an asshole

17

u/WhyIsNoOneStoppingMe 2d ago

Didn’t he get accused of SA?

1

u/WizardsAreNeat 2d ago

Textbook narccisist to the T.

-8

u/shoobsworth 2d ago

Nothing, Redditors are addicted to being outraged and offended by celebrities who aren’t saints.

-9

u/financebanking 2d ago

So do you!
