Am I part of the cult now?

Post image

I've used Knipex tools before and always knew they were the way to go, so I finally pulled the trigger and got one for myself! This model was originally designed for precise cutting work in electronics and precision engineering, but in my case it's going to be the "ultimate" 3D printing filament cutter. Lovin' it so far!

As a piano technician, thank you for ensuring your cutters go through piano wire

Sure thing, you got it! 🙏🙏

Wait until you discover knipex actually makes left and right handed versions of their tools

Wow that could be a game changer, I had no idea!

I have a few knipex tools. My 8 and 9 inch dikes are terrible. I've got a pair of Crescent torque multiplication dikes that are probably 6" that I use daily for a few years now (heavy duty diesel mechanic). Yes, I am aware, this is a very unpopular opinion.

Well, I guess unpopular opinions are also welcomed! Have you tried the Knipex TwinForce model? I'll definitely take a look at the Crescent catalog as well

They are shockingly good for the price (or in general). I've got multiple knipex, snap on, matco and none of them come close to how well these do. After years of abuse, they are just like new.

Great for zip ties

Indeed!

Depends, have you sworn off all others? That’s how you become a true member of the cult… Welcome!

LMAO that's a fair requirement

I have a similar Knipex set. When you are ready to go next-level, check out 3.peaks. SN-130 are amazing. No comparison.

Damn, these high-end japanese tools... They are pure art! It would look amazing combined with some Ko-ken and KTC Nepros

Never seen it before

If you use zip ties, these are a must. They flush cut so you don't have a razor sharp tail left over.

Exactly this 😁 That's the reason I bought mine.

Love mine

my favorite tool that I have. Be careful with it though. I once stabbed myself in the hand with mine. Small but dangerous.

1

u/_FelixUser_ 4d ago

Yeah, the jaws are quite sharp on these

Have had this one for 10 years. Looks the same as when I bought it.

Take care of your tools and they will outlive you

I love knipex but this is let justifiable to be because my $3 flushies work perfectly and open wider.

I bought these for filament too. They cut. A couple months ago I bought these and realized what I needed for filament.

1

u/_FelixUser_ 4d ago

Damn! They seem to be ideal for cutting supports and filament stringing

Only if you can name three songs off their album Electric.

Shit. Wrong sub. Welcome to the club.

Great song lyric

I think you have to have at least 3 knipex tools...

That's fair, soon to be accomplished

The 125s are as you say for electronics and the like. Using them with plastics (zip ties and the like, I'm guessing it's the same with 3D printing filaments) causes shock loads on the cutters that can eventually break them. The 140s are specifically designed to alleviate that problem (by being slightly beefier).

Of course they're not going to break immediately but in the long run they're not the best option

2

u/_FelixUser_ 4d ago

That's an interesting point! I considered buying the 140 mm version, but thought it would be too much for my use case. Since 3D printing filaments are round, it doesn't seem to produce as strong shock loads as when cutting flat nylon zip ties. It's a more "buttery" cut. But I'll test it with harder filaments to make sure it's appropriate. Thank you for your observations!

Can you cut 16 gauge pin nails with this?

1

u/_FelixUser_ 4d ago

I don't think so. This one is only recommended for steel wires up to 1 mm in diameter (18 gauge). If you need something compact but stronger, I would recommend the 70 02 125 or 70 05 125 model of their diagonal cutters line

2

u/somethingsoddhere 1d ago

Thank you for this, extremely helpful

2

u/Steiney1 5d ago

Are you going to use them on your zip ties so that they don't tear up the forearms of the next guy?

2

u/_FelixUser_ 4d ago

That's a really good use case

Empathy sets us apart from the animals.

Meh, spend 10k then loose 1k of them in various places, then, we will talk. It’s like joining a union, you have to pay your dues, and their due. 🤣

1

u/_FelixUser_ 4d ago

LOL I guess loosing tools happens more often than I thought 😅

Ahh, my cuticle and dead skin cutters.

Ok, I'll accept that 😂

Knipex isn't a cult. The tools are top-notch, hand them down to your grandkids type quality. Are you sure you're not thinking about Snap-On?

2

u/_FelixUser_ 4d ago

I have an immense respect for Snap-On, but [1] they are pretty hard to find here in Brazil and [2] most of the times their pricing is hard to justify... We use their torque wrenches in my job, and they work amazing, but again, they are just simple and pricey.

My favorite light duty flush cutter.

2

u/MesaGeek 5d ago

All I have to say is I wish someone would have told me it was pronounced “Kuh-Nip-Ex” years ago.

Those look identical to the cutters my daughter's orthodontist gave her for her braces.

Nope...just a sheep

1

u/clambroculese 2d ago

Ah yes, the old they’re popular so I have to dislike them to be unique and edgy.

-2

u/c3534l 5d ago

If those are just flush-cutters... I see no advantage.
