Mid-Cultivation / Still Growing Anyone ever use this? What’s the best way to sterilize your substrate?

That's the exact brand many people, including myself, use. You want the stuff for animals, not plants because the plant coir could contain bacteria that is beneficial to plants but not shrooms. Bucket TEK will do. Just put a brick in a bucket, pour boiling water in, cover it and wait overnight or a few hours while it cools. From what I've heard it's pretty contam resistant.

I think this is the coir I used, if it’s meant for reptiles that’s exactly what you want op

Ok awesome, I’m gonna mix some vermiculite in as well, so just a quicc noob question lol for buccet tek I completely seal the lid, it won’t explode?

2

u/[deleted] Feb 27 '23

Mine didn't, lol. No I don't think it will explode.

No need to add Verm with coir but if u do, I think you have to sterilize it

I put my coir in the bucket, break it up into smaller chunks, pour in half the water and return the other half to the stove, allow the coir to absorb the water in the bucket, you can help it along with a spatula or large spoon. Add your vermiculite and then the rest of the water. Leave lid sealed until cool. I usually give it a gentle roll, be careful because the lid can pop off (not explode) tho. Look up the recipe because you will need more water if your adding in the vermiculite and gypsum. It’s not entirely needed or beneficial in every situation. If you’re not in a dry area you may not have to worry about your sub drying out to fast. Where I live- in the summers I have no need and in the winter I do.

Thank you so much for the reply!

I recently just used some still wet coir that I poured boiling water over 3 weeks ago, zero contamination. It has just been sitting in the open air in my living room. It's VERY contam resistant.

Just for future reference you can throw it in a ziplock or tubber ware and repasteurize it in the microwave. Just for safety measures, and to help redistribute the moisture.

The comment I made before was basically suggesting that you don't need to repasteurise it. I'm not even sure if you need to do it to begin with unless it has been treated with trich.

To save weeks of effort I suggest hydrating the brick and then moving some to a different cointainer suitable to size and oven pasteurizing it for 2 hours at a steady temp of 155-165F then let it cool and use it.

Verm as well?

Yeah I follow the 90 second mycology oven pasteurization technique - uses CVG recipe think it's 650g coir 8 cups of vermiculite & 1 cup gypsum mix it all dry then I add distilled water until the mixture is at the desired field capacity then get the oven on and up high thermometer temp set to atleast 165F before starting a 2 hour timer - then turn the oven down to regulate the temp to hold it between 150 - 165F I try to keep It at 165 for the 2 hours

I break up my coco, put it into a metal boil that can handle heat, I Boil water for about 10 minutes then pour the water directly over the coco until its covered. I then cover the bowl with aluminum foil and let it sit until it cools, then do my transfer. I have had zero contamination, zero trich, nothing but success. There are multiple ways to do this though. There are also a thousand different posts on this subject if you want an endless amount of instant answers. Google "sterilizing coco coir reddit" and find all the answers tips and tricks you could ever imagine lol.

Thank you!

No prob good luck. 90 second mycology on YouTube has a newer video on this exact topic and how to squeeze just enough water out to get it right at field capacity. Good luck you got this.

Ok I will go watch, thank you!

Philly golden teacher and pops shrooms are also great channels. You can only learn so much though you'll learn most of this during your grow with hands on ya know what I mean but it's so simple if I can do it you can do it! 😊

It’s not sterilizing. You want to pasteurize it. Prepare as for bucket tek then put it in a roasting pan, cover with aluminum foil, and place in an oven pre-heated to 250degrees Fahrenheit. Cook for 30-45 minutes. Let cool.

i used these ones exactly with 1:1 UB rice to coir and its perfect

3

u/whatisprofound Feb 28 '23

Lots of people here use bucket tek. I'll also plug r/contamfam and DayTrips teks. She has one (in the about section) that describes how to pasteurize substrate. Bucket tek is an approximation of pasturizing, but some people get solid results from it.

2

u/[deleted] Feb 27 '23

That’s it. Use boiling water . Put in bucket with lid till cools down

2

u/Powerful_Title_5897 Feb 28 '23

Look up pgt substrate and he gives ratios with cvg and normal substrate

1

u/nunpizza Feb 27 '23

yes and if you read the guide it gives the ratio for coco coir to water to get to near perfect field capacity

1

u/Quirky-Dealer-1282 Feb 27 '23

I use loose coir, so much easier imo.

u/IAMHAAM Feb 27 '23

EcoEarth is the best brand to my understanding.

1

u/aborocz Feb 28 '23

Cold sterilization, Daytrippers tech is pretty surefire.

u/[deleted] Feb 28 '23

Oven.

Bucket tek will work but oven.

3

u/New-Kaleidoscope-791 Feb 28 '23

Ok this is an even answere I would say. Can you give me the differences. Is the oven for an hour to 2 hours really better? I need facts plz. First grow and my two bags are doing amazing. Mushrooms changed my life ❤️

It’s late here homie, else I’d explain more but fr I’m about to hop off my phone.

But with the oven your temps will be more consistent to pasteurize it, Long story short.

90SM has a good vid on it and I’ll link a thread here I used as well. One sec I’ll edit.

Edit: https://www.reddit.com/r/ContamFam/comments/k93m4j/daytrippers_trip_tips_is_your_pasteurization/?utm_source=share&utm_medium=ios_app&utm_name=iossmf

That, the vid, and some guess work and this subreddit is how I figured it out for me. I don’t think I’ll ever use bucket tek tbh. Again though, it will work!

This subreddit should be able to answer whatever else with some search work regarding either one. But I didn’t even have a meat thermometer (which is recommended) and mine worked out fine!

So ye, that’s my quick thoughts haha, gl homie

And happy to hear homie. Natures meds🤝

Oh and again I’ll recommend, the 90SM oven tek video. 100%
