Discussion Nintendo halts Switch 2 Pre-Orders over Tarrifs
https://kotaku.com/switch-2-preorder-price-tariff-trump-nintendo-185177476499
u/backdoorwolf 1d ago
It's gonna be close to $600.00 or $650.00 for the base model without MarioKart. Just watch.
21
u/Bootychomper23 1d ago
That’s Canadian prices that is!!

u/TriLink710 1d ago
When we wanted our dollar to match the American one again this isnt what we meant.

u/ohBloom 1d ago edited 1d ago
They’re going to raise the price to $600 😂😭
24
u/KookyChapter3208 1d ago
The idea of the Switch 2 being more expensive than a PS5 just kinda gave me a seizure 😂
32
u/addtolibrary 1d ago
Wait'll you see the price of a ps5
6
u/ChronoChigger420 1d ago
If the PS5 Pro ends up costing over $1000 I’m gonna put mine on eBay for $850

u/Julle1990 1d ago
a store in Finland was already selling the Mario Kart Switch 2 bundle for 650€, ridiculous, console was like 570€
1
u/_kony2012 1d ago
Effectively yes. I wonder if they try to sneak it into it as a shipping cost, or as a standalone extra tariff fee.

i never thought the stupidity of Brexit could be surpassed
well done Trump voters, you proved me wrong.
54
u/Ludenbach 1d ago
Voting Trump in the first time surpassed Brexit. America is doing victory (stupidity) laps now.
24
u/LordLame1915 1d ago
It’s actually scary how I have coworkers who insist that trump is a really good businessman who definitely knows what he’s doing.
Like, we aren’t goldfish, or at least I’m not. Guess I can’t say the same for my coworkers

u/shadowwingnut 1d ago
The man bankrupted a casino. There's only 2 ways to do that: be a terrible businessman or be laundering money. It still might take both.

u/KeybladeBrett 1d ago
Not a Trump fan at all, hated him during his first term, but I like to give people a pass for voting him in during 2016 election because I don’t think anyone could’ve predicted how awful he could’ve been.
7
u/TabularBeastv2 1d ago
Nah, there were plenty stupid things Trump did and said, back then, that should have made people realize he wasn’t a good candidate.
But Americans are fucking stupid.
0
u/KeybladeBrett 1d ago
Oh he absolutely did, I’m just saying I don’t think anybody could accurately predict how stupid it sounded because I was way off. I predicted things that are more tame in comparison.
1
u/imaloony8 1d ago
There was leaked audio of him admitting he sexually assaults women. There was Trump University. There was… literally anything he said. They still had no excuse then.
1
u/Ludenbach 1d ago
Really? I was physically shocked and panicked that such an openly inappropriate candidate had been elected as president.
0
u/KeybladeBrett 1d ago
I also thought he was a horrible pick. I think it's hard to predict how awful he could've been because all my predictions were much more tame than what actually happened because I didn't believe someone in power could be so stupid, yet here we are.
2016 you get a pass if you voted for him, 2020 is a big "WHY?" on my card, and 2024 is "ok you're a moron"
1
u/Ludenbach 23h ago
I agree the stupidity factor has exponentially increased. For my part I was stupid enough to not actually think someone as obviously unqualified would actually get voted in. The dude was caught on camera bragging about sexually assaulting women. There was a time that would have immediately disqualified someone. I get that some people were more concerned about the economy than the rights of women but how in gods name does someone bankrupt multiple Casinos? These are all things we knew about in 2016.
2
u/KeybladeBrett 21h ago
I remember when there was a Republican candidate (name is blanking me) in either 2004 or 2008 attempting to run who accidentally misspelled “potato” and he lost all his supporters for it.

1
u/imaloony8 1d ago
The good news is that digital goods aren’t subject to tariffs. So while the console and accessories will be expensive, you can get digital games for normal price. Small blessings during a truly fucked time.
2
u/RoseWould 23h ago
So; here's an 800$ switch, and then after any of the games end, and they make the next one in the series it'll be "well, they didn't make many of these so I want 1000$, no low balls i know what I got" on ebay, since there's the ability to buy a really pretty box with a key in it
8
u/Golden-Owl 1d ago
Keep in mind, the original price was MSRP.
MSRP is not set with taxes in mind.
Trump tossed a wrench into game prices. And not for the better…
3
u/KaiserK0 1d ago
Yep, and the prices of everything else, too
5
u/Golden-Owl 1d ago
My sympathies for the American gamers who voted against this.
This will have way bigger impact. Games are a small matter in comparison

Thats strange i could pre order in Germany already in a Electronic Marked with a fixed price of 509€ (with Mario Kart) so US Preorder is delayed becouse of Trump?
3
u/Kpheg5953 1d ago
Yes. Reports have said the European markets won't be affected.
1

What reports? Knowing how tariffs works would say that.

Scalpers dream here, resale your switch 2 for 2,000 dollars
3
u/CMUDePuydt 1d ago
If we aren't willing to pay $600, we sure aren't paying $2000. Most places have a firm restocking fee these days too, I saw it happen when no one wanted the PS5 PRO and scalpers were trying to return them
1
u/Mysterious_Mood_1516 1d ago
Pre sales paused because of tariffs, this isn’t the ps5 pro, this is just like PS5 release during covid, where the console was 3 times the ticket price
1
u/Shadow_botz 1d ago
Scalpers can go fuck themselves. No meat on the bone for them this time. Even at MSRP now with the tariffs this will have people pulling out.

u/JasonDS64 1d ago

u/BrewKazma 1d ago
Define “we”…..
2
u/PsychoticDust 1d ago
The 1/3 of voters who voted for Trump, and the 1/3 who didn't vote, so obviously didn't care?
Lol, Americans knew this guy was crazy from the first time he was in power, now 2/3's of voters allowed this to happen again. That's a pretty big "we".
1
u/t3stdummi 1d ago
Only 27% of America voted for Trump. I think that's an important number.
1
u/PsychoticDust 1d ago
True, but it's enough to have had a massive impact for the worse on America. There is something wrong with a society when they willingly vote for someone who is guaranteed to actively work against the interests of your country. There is something even more wrong when the facts are easily accessible, and you still make the same choice.
It seems that the phrase "common sense" might be a misnomer.

u/lazava1390 1d ago
You have to account for those that didn’t vote either. They are an important number because they are just as responsible.
1
u/R-K-Tekt 19h ago
Yup, I will never forgive the idiots who sat out the last election. You may not have voted for trump but you enabled him by sitting on your hands. If you didn’t vote last election and you were eligible, you asked for this.

$600 I think after tariffs complete insanity
2
u/SerchYB2795 1d ago
And that's if they take a loss, switches come from Vietnam that just got a 46% tariff, that'd be $655 for the Switch 2 and $729 for the bundle
3
3
u/Mother-Translator318 1d ago
Lol at all the people saying the $450 price and $80 games were because of tariffs. Buckle up buckaroos, we are in for a $600 console and $100 games 🤣
1
u/wolfannoy 1d ago
This looks like a tactic from Nintendo so they can get off the hook.
1
u/Mother-Translator318 1d ago
Nah, the tariffs aren’t Nintendo’s fault. But what I can guarantee is that once the tariffs are gone, Nintendo is gonna keep the tariff era price and pocket the difference
5
u/ProtoPrimeX1 1d ago
just nope, this is the worst time to release a premium priced console, and simultaneously premium priced games. to me the game prices are more offensive than the console. Consoles are expensive they always have been. obviously it's out of my price range because I find it unreasonable within my circumstances. it feels like there's no value if your games are almost a quarter of the price of the console. I'm sure we'll eventually get there price to value but you got tariffs, you got the price hike. Nintendo's going to have a bad time with this launch.
→ More replies (1)2
u/Whiteguy1x 1d ago
Honestly 450 for the console seems reasonable, but 80 for games is way too high. I hope that they abandon that price point and stick to 60 or 70 at most

u/heyitsvae 1d ago
Are we great again, America? Are we winning yet, America? Are your eggs cheaper yet, you fucking imbeciles?
2

Why would they take preorders? After Nintendo Direct, half of Reddit was screaming they were done with Nintendo

FFS it's like stopping the bus because the one guy is yelling and being a belligerent moron.
Throw him off the bus and then let everyone else pre-order as per usual please.

Without us all dying
Ah, there-in lies the problem. We may be at the point where non-violence will not be enough.
Buy a gun (while you still can), practice, train, educate yourself, and be prepared to stand up for our country and democracy. Fascism will ensure it only gets worse from here.
2
u/shadowwingnut 1d ago
I agree with you. But I have no need to individually go down that road until there's a critical mass where we can win.
And I do own a gun and am a pretty good shot God forbid it has to be used.
1
u/marumaruko 1d ago
That's the problem of this way of thinking. You will join if there is a critical mass. But a large amount of people think exactly that never joining the protest. And before you wanna gun down someone I think peaceful protest in large numbers should be tried first. Followed by substantial strikes to hurt the billionaires even more..
1
u/shadowwingnut 1d ago
Those things are simply not viable in the US. The ability to mobilize on that scale is impossible because of the number of people and the distance. You are functionally asking the equivalent of Madrid, London, Paris, Rome, Istanbul, Warsaw, Stockholm and Berlin to organize together in one accord without having it disrupted by the powers that be that all have 10 times the firepower of your police and military in Europe and a leader waiting for a chance to cause an incident.
Also I have protested. Multiple times. It doesn't even make the news anymore unless we block streets. Then people call either for our arrest or to shoot us. I also worked on one of the swing state Democratic Senate races that we won. I've cut spending, cut off all streaming services I don't need for my job except one and haven't bought a single thing that wasn't food, gas, medical or a digital video game since 3 new shirts after Christmas. There's nothing more I can do personally that's peaceful.

1
u/Mr_SunnyBones 1d ago
Mass (work) strikes and sitdowns maybe? The deck is kind of stacked against you guys though sadly .
Your only other option is some sort of benign military coup to sieze control until elections could be re organised . That or some other country 'liberating' you guys , and none of them look good .
1
u/shadowwingnut 1d ago
We're too large and our law enforcement too militarized and happy to enforce what the bosses say for that to work.
2
u/NeptunianWater 1d ago
Trump: "Nintendo will move here! They'll make their video game things in America and build them here for the world! You know I am a big fan of video games. Always have been. I love that Mario one with the jumping. I'm really good at it. The best. Some people say they've never seen someone jump better than me. I've jumped for a long time. But you wouldn't have this under Biden. He wouldn't let you play video games or anything. It was the worst time. The worst."

Increase of 25-50% depending on which country it is being imported into.
So the current set code of $449 before Tarrifs and assuming no new Tarrifs is going to be $560-675.

I’m already on the fence right now so idk how to feel, 125$ cad for games when most are upgrades for pretty much a look a like console is nuts. I’m not even sure if the physical games are truly physical.
I’ve never seen a new gen console be so lame, especially coming from Nintendo which is a pioneer in innovation.

I can’t believe the amount of people on different posts and apps that are absolutely gargling Nintendo’s balls and defending everything they’re doing. Sure, tariffs aren’t there fault but there plenty of other things going on with the switch 2 that was entirely their call.

Could this force Nintendo’s hand to lower the game prices to match something more affordable for the USA ?
Either way this is a bit of a disaster for Nintendo, the USA is a big market for them and the console/games were outrageously expensive before the tariffs, now they have been announced the thing will be even less obtainable for many.
Maybe this will also result in Xbox and Sony delaying a future console and instead getting more out of the current consoles before an expensive tariff ridden console is released
2
u/Weeros_ 1d ago edited 1d ago
How do you figure? Prices are going up in the US. Game cards are made in Japan -> subject to 24% extra cost as of next week.
It’s obviously better for Nintendo to not sell at all than sell at complete loss so how could they lower the prices? I mean maybe they could pivot hard in digital games since they don’t get Trump taxed.
0
u/RevolutionarySeven7 1d ago
honestly, with the way the economy is developing, the switch 2 feels just as expensive as a N64 at launch (pre Euro prices), inc the game prices
