Friend told me this is post worthy, anyways I’m blessed. I withdrew everything and put it all into VOO. Hoping I’ll be ahead of my age group for future retirement. God bless America.

before it became big enough to “sell the news,” but alas, I am not 22 and throwing $15k on a weekly would be considered financially irresponsible.

If this had failed, it’s ok to be young, dumb, and broke. It’s not ok to simply be dumb and broke, though, in my case. 😅

You're not actually "selling the news" You're buying into it by selling the stock or buying puts.

“Selling the news,” is when you make profit off of people speculating on content, pushed out by mainstream media. You make a play before the news comes out, hoping to capitalize on the volatility that follows.

Like I said, just like OP, I knew and had an opportunity to short something, but couldn’t because of personal financial obligations and responsibilities.

“Buying the news,” would be making a play after the DeepSeek news went viral. After the price movement and investor speculation has been priced in.

You have it back to front. You buy the rumor, the speculation that you're talking about, and when the news comes out, you sell. Though in this case, because the possible rumor/news is bad, you're actually selling stock because of the rumor and buying the stock on the confirmation of the news. To clarify, on the rumor, you go with it, and on the news, you go back the other way. There's a difference between buying the news and buying the stock after the news. The first meaning of buying is you bought - and paradoxically, you were sold on! - the rumor! as in believed it.

You’re taking it too literal.

It’s just a phrase.

You could buy or sell a stock/asset and it’ll still be “selling the news,” as long as it’s profit made from the event.

You buy the rumor and sell the news, if you make a play before big news, and profit on it during/after the news. That play doesn’t necessarily have to be a buy and sell, despite how the phrase is worded.
