Where do you guys look for truly neutral interpretations of economic data? Not terminally bearish or bullish but objective.

"The Trump administration argues that steep tariffs are necessary to bring production and manufacturing jobs back to the United States. “The message is tariffs are tax cuts. Tariffs are jobs. Tariffs are national security,” Navarro said. “Tariffs will make America great again.”
If Mr. Tariffs is sending his homies out to talk up the benefits of tariffs over the weekend leading up to Liberace Day, something tells me he really is going to follow through on them after all.
4
u/berrschkob 5d ago
They wouldn't have everyone talking up tariffs, and name the day, if it wasn't happening. I mean, they could, this admin is nuts, but it seems hard to believe.
7
u/The_real_Covfefe-19 5d ago
Some were saying he'll probably back out and postpone another month, and were predicting he'd walk back a lot of tariffs over the weekend (I kinda thought he might do this, too) but he did the opposite, doubled down, talked them up, and wants to "be more aggressive" with them.
7
u/TopDeckHero420 5d ago
People believe this shit too. It's just fucking astonishing how stupid Americans are on average. They can't even tell you who we won independence from, but somehow they know exactly how good tariffs are. Fucking regarded. It's seriously fucking depressing just how ignorant we are. And the worst part? They fucking revel in it. It's funny, they cheer it on. Our hubris will be our downfall.. and you know what? We fucking deserve it.
8
u/VariatCA 5d ago
Yeah, tariffs are a tax cut... trillions of dollars in tax cuts, for the richest elite in the USA, because regular consumers are going to pay the bill as the cost of fuckin' everything goes up.
Such a complete crock of shit, but hey, it's spoken confidently and with authority and that's what people believe.

u/BetterSignature146 5d ago
I am financially ruined

u/Swagship 5d ago
Same, I turned 15,000 into 500. I can’t put anymore in or I will not have an emergency fund. Luckily everything was crypto magic money anyway. I’m buying OTM SPY 500 puts two weeks out with my remaining 500 tomorrow morning, and I’m just going to let them ride. 🇺🇸🇺🇸🇺🇸

I make sure it’s not fba or 3rd party. My sources (netflix) say it goes right in the trash, will update if charged. “So sorry, my chemo brained mother packaged the wrong item”
1
u/lostbanbet 5d ago
Yea they weigh it then send it straight to the trash. Or a bulk returns pallet they sell to people sight unseen. That’s the IRL loot box if you guys want to gamble on yet another thing and end up with a bunch of literal garbage.

I hope we enter a recession and I get laid off and can sit at home and play video games on unemployment for six months.
1
u/The_real_Covfefe-19 5d ago
You could've done that if you were a government employee and took Mr. Tariffs and Pres. Musk's offer in February.

Exactly. Everyone is scared...of what exactly? More US jobs, more foreign companies setting up a shop in the US to avoid tariffs? More tax breaks, less regulation, balanced budget, Ukraine and Gaza wars over. I mean, I'm no Orange man supporter but wall of worry anyone?

I really been accumulating put leaps with every drop in VIX and using my gains from the vix spikes and short term puts to buy more. I'm not letting a good crisis go to waste, I'm retiring from this crash and going to use a large portion of my gains to buy the dip after spy 350. I have 35 years until I'm eligible for distributions so I'm pretty confident in HODLing from there.
1
u/d33p7r0ubl3 Positions or ban 5d ago
You're expecting another 35% drop from here?
3
u/LarryStink Recession canceled ber r fuk 5d ago
Actually yeah
1
u/d33p7r0ubl3 Positions or ban 5d ago
I don’t think things are nearly as bad as 2008 but we’ll see
2
u/LarryStink Recession canceled ber r fuk 5d ago
2008 also didn't have the run up in valuations leading into it.
1
u/d33p7r0ubl3 Positions or ban 5d ago
Yes it did. That’s what caused the whole thing. Lots of exuberance and free capital caused greed and the creation of highly leveraged products
1
u/LarryStink Recession canceled ber r fuk 5d ago
This market is something like 30% higher p/e than the 2007 peak before the crash
2
u/LarryStink Recession canceled ber r fuk 5d ago
In real estate, not in equities
1
u/d33p7r0ubl3 Positions or ban 5d ago
It’s not about the vehicle. The fact that capital was flowing so freely that it went into leveraged products shows the exuberance at the time. Not as bad as 1999-2001 but the “this time is different” feeling was there
2
u/LarryStink Recession canceled ber r fuk 5d ago
And there is no resemblance of that in the equity space today? Ai? Crypto? Quantum? Private credit and private equity? 50% in 2 years on one company's earnings but all that capex has yielded nothing for the company's spending it. With the plug being pulled on fiscal stimulus, and monetary policy bound to hold, I don't think its unreasonable to see -40 or -50% going forward in the event of a recession. Of course the event of a recession is the key here. Absent that, I see -20% from ath which puts us around 480
1
u/d33p7r0ubl3 Positions or ban 5d ago
Yes all of that is in the market today. I agree. But 2008 was the near collapse of the global financial system. We were one day away from banks not opening. I don’t see a repeat of that but who knows

u/BooBrew32 5d ago
Is there a decent VIX ETF that's okay for shorting? Seems like every time I look at options, the spread is wider than Mango's ass.

Why are poor people complaining? They should be celebrating the diminishing net worth of the rich and that equities are becoming more affordable according to Reddit logic.
Don't the redditors and twitter users say rich people and corporations have too much money and working class can't afford to invest or own assets?
