Moving to Windsor being queer in windsor

I am moving to windsor with my partner in march, and we've been trying to get a feel for the culture a bit before we get there. We have increasingly been getting the impression that windsor is perhaps not the most friendly to trans/queer people. My partner and I are both trans, so we are obviously a bit worried by this possibility and wanted to get some more perspectives on it.

Are any of you queer? How do you identify and what has been your experience living in Windsor? Has your identity made it difficult to find a job in the area? Any advice on finding places where we feel safe and connected to the community?

If not, how do you and the people around you feel about queer people in your community?

Moving to Windsor Living in windsor

Hey all, is living in windsor a good place for a 26 year old? Single income, don't need much for a place at all, the bare minimum gets me by just fine. I'd be coming from the yukon, so use to housing and groceries being expensive. Job won't be an issue for me, I'll find something that works Edit: if you think somewhere else is better than windsor, like london or kitchener, let me know!

Moving to Windsor Family of 5, so many concerns...

Hi Windsor!

I'm a prospective immigrant to your beautiful city, planning to move there with my family (husband and 3 kids) by early February. We just got our PR from Cameroon. Windsor was recommended to us by my aunt in Michigan, and honestly we have gotten behind the idea without much effort. I love the small town feel of the city and think we'll enjoy raising our kids there. But it's a big move, and I'm super anxious about a couple of things, I'm hoping to get some answers from you all. Thanks in advance, I'll try to make this short.

  1. Please advise on which area of town we can rent in, and rather apartments or houses (we need 3 bedrooms). My research seems to indicate that East Windsor is best suited for families, what are your thoughts?
  2. I guess this should have been the first question, but where would you advise we actually land? I know there's an airport in Windsor but I'm thinking it would be cheaper for us to land in Ottawa or Toronto, process our PR and then move down to Windsor by bus, train or car (please advise). Does this sound effective? It's all about saving costs.
  3. Public transport without a car, with kids 16, 8 and 1.5 years old, especially in the first few weeks or months, how feasible is that? Or would it be best to get one on credit as we can't afford a down payment in the beginning?
  4. Actually finding a house, any tips? Anything I should look out for or against?
  5. I'll take any and all advice, so please don't hesitate to throw in any information that could help us settle in smoothly.

If you managed to read this far, thank you so much! If you are able to answer even just one of my queries, you're amazing!!

Moving to Windsor Would you recommend Windsor or a nearby town...

I'm a Canadian/US dual citizen who has lived in the southern US from grade school to middle age. I'd say I'm 10-15 years from possibly retiring, and my wife and I are ready for a change of venue.

How would you rate the overall quality of life in that whole area up to a 60 minute drive from Detroit? Safety, cleanliness, general stability, dining options, reasonable housing costs (all things considered - Canadian housing prices are still looking wildly inflated from what I see), etc.?

If I have the opportunity to continue working for my current employer, I'd be coming in with a pretty upper middle class US income, but we generally live below our means. The proximity to Detroit would afford me cheap airfare to/from my current home airport with barely a 2 hour flight, so I'm really hoping Windsor or something nearby could fit the bill.

Moving to Windsor Windsor or Edmonton

Lived in Toronto my whole life, but rent and life is getting unaffordable. My partner and I want to move out together but are stuck between these 2 cities. We want to one day own a home. My partner is a business management degree holder and I graduated from nursing. The idea of Windsor is to be close to family and you have Detroit next door but Edmonton feels like a city that’s growing. Please share your thoughts if I was to get up and move now where would you recommend in terms of living, housing, and just every day life. Also keep in mind whatever political stuff going on right now

Moving to Windsor Walkable neighborhoods

Hey everyone,

I just landed a new job that’s fully remote and since I have a project for the future in Windsor, I’ve decided to move out of Toronto in April. I’ve been wanting my own place for a while, and this will also help me save some money.

Now, here’s where things get interesting.

I don’t have a car and don’t plan to get one anytime soon—partly because I’m saving money. I’ve only been to Windsor once, so I have a good idea of how (limited) the public transit is. With that in mind, I’m looking for neighborhoods with good walkability. Some things are flexible (like online grocery shopping if needed), but I’d still prefer to be in an area where I can get around without relying too much on a car.

I’ll also have a side hustle in South Windsor, but I haven’t found any rentals in that area. Because of that, I’m seriously considering getting an e-bike. However, I’ve heard there are some bike theft issues in Windsor, so I might look into paying for indoor parking at my building.

If you have any recommendations on neighborhoods or know of any rental offices, I’d really appreciate it! Feel free to share links here or in my inbox if you have them.

Thanks so much!

Moving to Windsor Rediscovering Windsor: Entry 2: The Home of Pizza

Post image
140 Upvotes

Here we go again guys with another amazing Windsor rediscovery!

Let me preface by saying that I LOVE Pizza. A lot more than the next guy, and probably to the point that I'd eat it for every meal (anything can be a pizza)

So, when I was treated tonight to Krustys Pizza, I was extremely happy. However, I was not expecting to die under the enormous slices that were given.

And making it dirty? (Adding garlic butter) Oh my Godzilla people! I forgot how many pizza shops Windsor had, and to see how each makes their own sauces, brings a wonderful warm feeling to my soul.

The pizza here is also so rich in flavour, and it's not bland like shops from the west.

And. This is the big one. That only costed me 10 bucks. 5 a slice. Like Excuse Me? You assault me with a record breaking slice of pizza, AND you make it extremely affordable? Who the heck do you think you are?

Krustys

That's who they are.

Moving to Windsor Job Hunting

Hey gang, Just curious if there’s a Windsor Specific job board that people seem to use Wife & I are planning to move to Windsor this year- would like to line up a job first obviously.

Currently in Halifax there’s a dedicated Insta page that all the smaller businesses tag- does this exist for Windsor?

TIA

I have a recently flourishing portrait painting career that I can do anywhere. Is windsor a lifeling place I can likely settle down with my cats? I'm okay with renting a shoe box sized place.

Moving to Windsor Windsor or Montreal in my case?

Hi everyone! I work remotely and I'm considering moving to either Windsor or Montreal. I'm currently in Toronto and it's pretty expensive & I'm not getting much out of it honestly.

My goal is:

  1. Save more money.
  2. After saving some money, trying to start any side hustle to increase my income (online or offline)

Questions:

  1. For a couple is $3000 monthly enough for mid-range lifestyle?
  2. Is there anything important I should know regarding life in Windsor?
  3. I'll be visiting Windsor to check how are things there, any neighbourhoods or areas I should check to get a sense of Windsor?
  4. Is it a big advantage to be close to Detroit or not much?

Note: I don't speak French

Moving to Windsor Should I move to Windsor or London?

Hi all, I'm from the States (Michigan) and I'm working on an intracompany transfer. I'm trying to move entirely to Canada for the below reasons:

-To escape the extreme hyper political landscape of the US and live a more peaceful life -To stop experiencing severe discrimination when using expensive healthcare (everything is always "it's just your depression/anxiety"). -To experience better culture. People seem to really, really don't care about others anymore from my experience, especially during and post-covid.

They may not be good reasons, but I really have felt hopeless in the States for years. And I am looking to move to either Windsor or London.

Small edit: I am only considering a condo at this time because I own a house in Michigan and I am STRUGGLING as a singular person to repair and maintain a small yard, basement, etc after an expensive multi-month health crisis that was initially shrugged off as "lol anxiety" by multiple ER/doctors

Can anyone help me understand the pros and cons of both? I know London has harsher winters which is a huge turnoff for me, but I also hear Windsor is in a "downturn?" Is that actually true? I work remotely in supply chain, so Windsor being an international port is fascinating.

Moving to Windsor Psychologists

Hi!

I'm looking to move to Windsor in the fall. Curious if anyone has some recommendations for good psychologists, preferably who have EMDR proficiency.

Alternatively, if there are psychologists to stay away from I'd also love that knowledge.

Moving to Windsor Neighbourhoods to live in Lasalle

I was born and raised in Windsor but moved away for uni. I’ve since lived in great walking cities like Halifax, Toronto and Vancouver. Now with a young family the pull of home is calling, I’m missing the community. What are some areas of Lasalle to consider? Being part of a friendly community is important to me, and I love easy access to nature and walkability.

I’m VERY spoiled in my current hood: I can walk to a beautiful park with a lake and trails, grocery stores, coffee shops, a library and pretty much any amenity I need. I know I won’t find that in Lasalle but are there any areas where there will be some stuff within walking distance that’s not a strip mall?

Moving to Windsor Planning to move in Windsor Essex, suggestions welcomed!

Hello everyone,

We are a family of 4 with 2 young princesses, and after a lot of thoughts, searches and travels we've finally came to the conclusion that this part of our Country is what we are looking for in order to raise our family.

We've been there already multiple times and we have our idea on where to settle (at least we have a ranking of the places) but we would like to hear the opinion of you guys.

I believe this question has been asked already but I would like to gather in one place all the possible info.

What we would like to have is a comparison between Amherstburg - Belle River - Kingsville - Lasalle - Tecumseh (as we do not believe we'll be able to afford South Windsor).

Thank you in advance for anyone's help, suggestions, indications!

Moving to Windsor Has anyone made the move from Halifax, NS to Windsor?

I and my wife are thinking of trying out Canada for a few years.

We are from UK and prefer milder weather and despite visiting both Halifax, NS and Windsor, ON we can't make up our mind. Mainly because visits tend to paint a vibrant picture compared to actually living in a place.

We don't want to sink everything we have to paying for rent and both places appear to have cheaper properties than most of Canada. We will find job easily where ever we go and should earn 100K+.

Windsor's pros are: small city, easy access to US. Cons: Wife afraid of snakes and hates roaches, she has to give an exam to work in ON.

Halifax's pros are friends from UK, shorter flights to UK, no exam for wife and very nice, friendly people. Cons, higher taxes, far away from everywhere.

Has anyone made the move and what are your thoughts on it?

Moving to Windsor Moving to Windsor

So, me and my husband are both welders and are looking into moving to Windsor!

We want to visit the city for a day and see what its like. Neither of us drive so we'd be using transit.

Any recommendations on places we should check out? I'm hoping to see the REAL Windsor. My only plan at the moment is to choose a bus route and ride it full circle. Looking at the transit map, I'm thinking the 3. Think there's a better route that would give a better representation of the city?

Bonus Question for local Welders and tradespeople:
How's the welding work over there? Lots of jobs? Good pay?

Thanks all!

Moving to Windsor Importing car to Canada. Does it need to be done on same day

of exporting it from US ?
Planning to export the car on US side on 18th Nov and crossing the border into Canada on 21st and planning to import it at Windsor tunnel border office at that time.
Anything wrong with this plan ?

Update(11/18): I just confirmed with transport Canada that the import does NOT need to happen on the same day on the Canadian side. THIS IS WRONG.

Final Update(11/20): I was at the Detroit port office this morning to complete the export and I HAD to cross the border and import on the Canadian side on the same day. I asked the officer if I can do tomorrow but they said I have to cross the border now once the title is export stamped. And I just finished importing on the Canadian side( Canadian border officer also said that I have to complete the import today).

Moving to Windsor Wanting to move to Orchard Park area in Lakeshore

We are hoping to find a house in the Orchard Park area of Lakeshore and am wondering if anyone who lives/has lived there can comment on the area, particularly for a young family? Likes, dislikes? We have two kids (1 yr & 3 yrs). My husband is concerned about the railroad tracks being so close and whether the sound would be bothersome. Any comments would be greatly appreciated!

Moving to Windsor Can anyone vouch for Posh Pooch?

UPDATE Upon a few good words in the comments (thank you) I went ahead and booked an appointment. There are two girls there and each took one of my girls. They came out smelling GREAT. It's a little on the pricey side but when I've gone to PetSmart I've had to add in a lot of the things this place includes like teeth brushing and nail filing (they have sharp little nails), so for that, it's really not bad. Overall I'm happy and I re-booked.

I'm new to the area and looking for a groomer for my two doodles. Lots of places around here aren't taking new doodles. I've been looking at Posh Pooch but it's a bit of a drive but they have good reviews. Dogs look good in the pictures, but I've had some bad experiences in the past with groomers and I'm nervous to take the leap. I don't really know anyone here yet, and any dogs I've met at the park their groomers are full. Anyone have experience with this business? I'm quite picky when it comes to my doodle babies.

I realize I made a complaint like 20 mins ago, but I also want to say this:

This city is so beautiful. It's so lush with green scapes, the trees are HUGE and lush, AND THE MURALS!

OMG THE MURALS ARE SO EPICALLY BEAUTIFUL!

It looks so beautiful here, and it's great to be home.

OH AND I SAW LIGHTNING BUGS FOR THE FIRST TIME IN 13-14 YEARS LAST NIGHT! YALL HAVE LIGHTNING BUGS!

I also forgot how many festivals we had in the summer! SRAWBERRY FEST made me feel all warm and Nostalgic.

And the fireworks?! I can't wait! I feel really lucky to be home guys.
