Segregate your flock NOW from all wild birds.

1.9k Upvotes

For EVERYONE that does not have a completely fenced off chicken run or enclosure:

Bird Net your enclosures and do your very best to keep all wild birds AWAY from your chicken coop and enclosure. Do NOT free range right now, not until the dangers have passed.

No, don't think about it. NOW. This bird flu is particularly serious, it has an exceedingly HIGH mortality rate that can not only kill ALL of your flock, but it will kill your pets and potentially harm family members, too.

Find SOME WAY to keep water fowl, QUAIL, starlings, and other flocking birds AWAY FROM YOUR FLOCK....

I have been finding dead quail on my property, which means that if I am not careful, my chickens and potentially my household is next.

If you don't have a completely fenced off enclosure, you are literally playing with a pandemic here.

DON'T PLAY WITH THEIR LIVES OR YOURS.

MOVE!!!

SEGREGATE YOUR CHICKENS NOW!!!

This little nugget is Geraldine aka Curley Fry aka Miss Frizzle. She’s a little powder keg of sass and lets no obstacle stand in her way.

My handsome, funny, intelligent, silly little guy passed away suddenly a few days ago and I have been grieving hard. I rescued him from the mountains in October 2024. He was a young roo, his crown and waddle were so tiny (last photo)! He was becoming such a smart, independent, confident, and hilarious guy. Everyone on the block LOVED him. I just wanted to share his beauty! I’m so incredibly lucky that I had the opportunity to share this part of life with him. My new motto in life is “What would Kevin do?” 💖

Coops etc. You may have considered burying hardware cloth around your coop, but have you ever considered a moat?

Highly recommend - tiny alligators absolutely necessary.

(For real though we’ve had record rainfall while I’ve been in the process of digging around the run/coop for a buried hardware cloth apron/rock fill and it made me laugh when I looked out the window)

Give me your most rad/goth/favorite names. I have 29 deathlayers, 17 Ayam cemani and a few Mystic Onyx that are currently nameless. I've named the last bazillion chickens and am running out of ideas 😂 (pic so it doesn't get lost)

Health Question Can anyone tell me what this behavior was about?

This was taken on March 23rd and for some reason I couldn’t upload the video on here.

He did this only three or four times and all happened that day. Nothing else seemed out of place at all and he never did it again after that. He passed away a few days ago without any visible signs of injury, illness, trauma whatsoever. Kevin was around 7-8 months old. I miss him so much more than I expected and his passing is proving to be pretty hard on me. I am just really hoping that the cause wasn’t something that I could have prevented.

Hen or Roo Need help identifying big chick.

I just don't know what I'm dealing with here. This one chick is way bigger than the others and it loves water. Its voice keeps cracking, so I think it's a rooster. What do you think?

Okay so, I am so sad to have possibly found out my favorite chick is potentially a roo (isn’t that how it always works out? 🫠).

The hen is an olive egger, I’m guessing a barred olive egger. So a cream legbar cross. Don’t know forsure but she’s basically brown with barring and two tiny little head feathers.

She was bred to my pure ayam cemani roo (too much mulberry to be show quality, but great for a future zombie project). With her obviously being barred, would her offspring have a white spot? He is 3 weeks and two days. Heavy on the barring already. They hatched with a pretty distinct white spot.

I feel like I’m stumped! The other baby has puffy cheeks with no white spot and is kinda silvery in color.

They like to perch on top of the plate which is so cute!

The younger one on the left is a golden lace wyandotte named Alice and the older one on the right is a barnyard mix named Annabelle. I think the older one is closer to 6 weeks old and the young one is maybe a week or two behind her.

I got them in mid March and they’re doing well! I want to move their brooder into the coop next week since it will feel a bit more like spring and less like winter. I plan to keep their heat plate too for the next 4 weeks (they will be ~8 weeks old then).

I have a large dog crate coming on Monday and if it’s warm enough I’ll move them in there to start meeting my other 4 girls for short sprints during the day. I want to take my time with integration it’s my first time doing this and I hope it goes well 😬

Anyway just wanted to share! Tell me your stories of integrating your new birds with an existing flock!

I got her from a tub at Rural King that said "bantam" as a chick in order to satisfy some broody hen. I assumed she'd be a silkie mix but clearly not. She's more than 18 weeks old and I don't think she's getting bigger.

I went to check on our orpington chicks that got moved out to the box that we use to acclimate new chicks to the rest of the flock, and found three dead and one that had to be put down. All four were missing their right legs. The box is a 2x4 frame with pallet walls covered in chicken wire. There are latched and locked gates on the front for cleaning out bedding and top lift doors to access the food and water that is suspended from the roof. We haven't had any issues with predators inside the run besides an egg thieving black snake a couple years ago. There was no signs of any attemp to dig under and no prints on the exterior of the box to be found. Any assistance or tips would be greatly appreciated. Thanks in advance.

As I commented on someone else's post, it never gets easier for me. So here I present an amazing lady.

Shout out to the last of my OG chickens. I loved her so much, but unfortunately chickens don't have the longest of lives. Corduroy aka Cordy aka Big Brown Bird loved to peck at my freckles, sit on my boots while I drank coffee, and lay the most beautiful blue eggs. She hasn't laid an egg in a bit minute but that didn't stop her from being my favorite. RIP Queen..

Cheers everyone.

Our chicks just arrived in West Texas from Meyer Hatchery in Ohio. They hatched Monday and seem really perky given their extended journey.

Health Question Chicken chased by dog

Our girl was chased by a corgi. She was cowering in the corner of our shop. Not sure if she was bit but there was no blood. She’s limping on one leg and nothing seems broken. she’s had some water and a little bit of food. She’s secluded herself in her nesting box, panting a little bit and closing her eyes. We’re trying to leave her be but anything else we should look out for or try if she’s not doing better tomorrow? We just lost a girl last week to a hawk so our girls have been through it 😢

chicken math

if you live in a city and there is a cap on how many birds you can have, do you have a formula for adding new birds so you can supplement egg production without increasing the flock size too fast? i am imagining starting with 3 and then +2 every 2-3 years..

i don't have a yard right now so just playing make-believe until it becomes realistic.

edit: i thought you all might say this lol

Coops etc. Chicken Coop

Hi all! We inherited a chicken coop with our home. I currently have 4 week old chicks in a brooder and I’m working on getting their outdoor coop all set up. There is kinda an odd floor opening design that I’m trying to figure out. The previous owners had a ramp underneath but no closure for the night that I’m aware of. I’m looking for advice on what others would do for a closure. I’ve considered adding hinges on the ramp so we could latch it at night. I’ve never seen an automatic door on a floor but could that be a possibility? The run is very secure so I’m not too worried but I would like the extra safety.
