More to come:
Last Updated April 3, 2025
The U.S. has an array of new actions intended to intimidate and coerce former allies
Upcoming actions:
- Unspecified: 250 % tariff on dairy and lumber
- Targeted at Canada.
Actions against Ukraine:
Also expected this week are talks between Ukraine and U.S. that by all appearances would be a first step towards supplanting Zelensky with a pro-Russian figurehead and then dividing Ukraine up between the U.S. and Russia.
Additionally, the US is anticipated to deport over 240,000 Ukrainians who fled Russia’s attacks and have temporary legal status in the United States.
The U.S. has cut off all intelligence sharing for Ukraine, including compelling U.S. private companies to stop sharing satellite imagery
Terminated vital support for F-16 fighter jet jamming equipment.
Actions against NATO:
U.S. has cast doubt on whether they would respond to an allied country under attack, effectively ending NATO in all but name.
Actions currently in effect:
- March 4: 20% tariffs against China and 25% tariff on about 50% imports from Mexico and 62% from Canada
- March 12: A 25% US tariff on imports of steel and aluminum from all countries.
- April 3: 25% tariffs on Auto imports from all countries.
- April 3: So-called "Reciprocal" tariffs - https://www.theguardian.com/business/2025/apr/03/trumps-tariffs-the-full-list

In case you doubt your power in boycotting US products
Goldman Sachs has just increased (9.00 am BST) its estimate of US going into recession in next 12 months from 35% to 45%.
This is based on their analysis:
In a note titled “US Daily: Countdown to Recession”, Goldman also lifted its 12-month recession probability from 35% to 45%, following “a sharp tightening in financial conditions, foreign consumer boycotts, and a continued spike in policy uncertainty” following Trump’s tariff announcements.
Keep the faith and hold the line!

Proud of Europe (from a Canuck)
I'm really proud of Europe's attitude of late and very much look forward to a fresh and mutually beneficial trading relationship with our "old country" administrations. Let us all --i.e. the rest of the world-- follow Canada and Europe and not back down to a toddler bully who is deliberately crashing his own economy (to what end?...Haven't been able to figure it out unless he wants the US to become a dictatorship that would rule North and South America and let China and Russia split the rest of the world.
I'm hoping that on our watch, we will instead create the alliances that existed before WWII when the US was mired in the same isolationist attitude... I'm doing my best to not be terrified by the clarity of the Russia and North Korea tariff exemptions... (I've worked in jobs I would have been fired for by showing the tiniest concession to the "known enemies of the United States"), but it will take all of us in the rest of the world to come together in peaceful trade and alliance to allow the US to return to its 1950s state of "non-intervention."
There are so many possible scenarios that don't involve war, including some US state secessions, either as independent sovereign nations or joining Canada. Let's all focus on alternatives.
In the meantime, I believe the boycotts are a perfect way to redistribute the obscene wealth that has accumulated in a tiny handful of dominant companies. There is plenty to share, and scores of brilliant entrepreneurs who are racing to fill the gaps to meet the demand of the hundreds of millions of us across the globe that would welcome alternatives.
Stay strong. Use your purchasing choices to support your home country first, then other countries whose values you share.
My goal this month is to get off US digital products... which is a major challenge, but I'm up to it. If you haven't seen this chart, it's a terrific start. https://www.reddit.com/r/BuyCanadian/comments/1jnbpen/comment/mldcdi5/?context=3

Convicted drug dealer pardoned by Trump arrested again for assaulting a child
Just a peach of a citizen:
Marzulli revealed that Braun's charges include assaulting an elderly man; assaulting his wife; groping his nanny without her consent; assaulting a 3 year old child, and threatening a hospital staff member.

One more reason to boycott 'made in the US'. Trump officials quietly move to reverse bans on toxic ‘forever chemicals’ in consumer goods.

After today, this sub is more valuable than ever
Appreciate all the effort and advice people here are putting out there. The last 4 days have been a wake up call and efforts must be increased, while at the same time keep in mind that, perfect is the enemy of great and "puritanical" attitudes are counter productive

Fast food largely supports republicans
In using the goods unite us app, I have been surprised to learn that most of the major fast food chains largely donate to the Republican Party. Wendy’s, Taco Bell, McDonalds…I knew fast food wasn’t good for me, but now I have a stronger reason to avoid these places.
