Ant-Man Annual #1

u/Cyclops_is_Right Jul 15 '15
Wow. Just when I though I was over Pym from Rage of Ultron. Why did I have to laugh so much at my favorite character's totally-not-sex-bots?

This was fantastic. The "real origin" of Ant-Man is hilarious. That twist ending was very surprising too. Wonder if it will and how it will actually carry over.

See the cover of the upcoming Astonishing Ant-Man #1. In the background. Find the one without All-New All-Different banner.

u/threebuffsharks Jul 16 '15
whoa totally missed that! Thanks! So gay Indian Giant Man is happening!
12
u/NoahJAustin Jul 15 '15
I really, really love the banter between Men Giant and Ant. Also a great Hank Pym story, which I will always adore.
11
u/grey-lantern Jul 15 '15
Gonna wait for the trade from now on, but the past story arc was pretty amazing so I have high expectations for this book - especially the annual.
7
u/mysaadlife Jul 15 '15
That was great I loved the hank and scott interactions so I'm guessing this is set after secret wars?
8
Jul 16 '15
Before Secret Wars. Rage of Ultron being set after Secret Wars is 4chan rumor.
5
u/suss2it Jul 16 '15
Yeah, Tom Brevoort confirmed it's pre-Secret Wars.
3
u/akotchofa Jul 16 '15
Well he seems to be answering that the Uncanny Avengers reboot is pre-Secret Wars
3
u/suss2it Jul 16 '15
Yeah you're right. I did a quick search and that's what popped up and I quickly skimmed it. But now that I think about it I recall people saying it's post-Secret Wars which makes sense since Lady Thor is part of the Avengers roster in that book, when in pre-Secret Wars she hasn't joined up yet. I guess it'll just forever be one of those confusing continuity things we shouldn't worry about too much.

Really enjoyed this issue, but how lame is Raz's origin story if he is in fact going to be the next Giant-Man?

Siege #1
21
u/Wildmansy Jul 15 '15
Well the Wall being the Thing theory has finally been proven. Kinda cool that he was actually sentient.
Also the "endless summers" is the most marvelously awesome pun / team ever!!!
5
2
u/grey-lantern Jul 15 '15
I didn't know about that theory, so I guess Doom has a place for every member of the FF, (besides Reed?)
14
u/relapsingoncemore Jul 15 '15
As stated in Secret Wars #4, Doom searched everywhere for a version of Reed, and couldn't find him. This likely stems from the destruction of the Council of Reeds, the thorough destruction of multiple Reeds by the Cabal, and that both 616 and 1610 Reed were in Multiversal Life Rafts.
5
u/grey-lantern Jul 15 '15
Right, I remember now, thanks!
Good theory, I wonder if Doom saved the other members fom the raft, since at least Sue and the kids don't seem too far off their 616-counterparts.

Then, as you said and we saw, he's placed himself in the role of Reed Richards and Sue Richard's official title on Battleworld is royal consort. So does that mean exactly what we think it means?
She is his wife. I don't want there to be any confusion, and we'll get into it a little bit more, but the Susan and Johnny that we talk about in this issue are not the Marvel Universe Susan and Johnny that died in issue #1. Those people are dead and gone. This is a different Sue from a different Earth, and I'll leave it at that for now.
This might be the first time I disagree with a decision Hickman has made regarding this arc. I'll trust there's something at play, but for now, I consider that a huge missed opportunity
8
u/grey-lantern Jul 15 '15
Would have liked to get more in depth with the characters, besides that I thought it was a solid issue. Great different styles of art and an interesting setup, even though the shields fall has been strongly hinted at since the beginning of Secret Wars.
I wonder why Doom even let's the Badlands exist, from what we know he's powerful enough to wipe them out all by himself.
5
6
u/ldujet Jul 15 '15
Have you seen the cover of Secret wars 6? Thanos fighting the hordes of beyond the wall, made me think that the thanos they say may be the 616 one. Also it feels like Siege is going to be the most important tie-in history wise in Secret wars
4
u/cleanjerms Jul 15 '15
Shit. I was going to save money this week by not buying Secret Wars tie-ins. I feel like this too important to miss now!
2
u/fordo Jul 16 '15
Thats what i thought!!! Damn you Marvel for enabling my addiction!!!
2
u/thomiss89 Jul 16 '15
I think most of the tie-ins are going to suddenly change because of the events in the main Secret Wars title. The last A-Force cover shows the zombies attacking them(after SW issue 6 comes out). I wouldn't be suprised if the scattered heroes and villains turned up in some of the titles.
2
u/Nairbnotsew Jul 16 '15
A couple of weeks ago they gave away a free cardboard thing that you punched out standees of the 616 heroes that you use on your Battleworld map that some retailers were giving away so you can track where each of the heroes ends up. I can't see the main book following the heroes a ton since there is so much in play right now, makes sense to have them get some limelight in other tie ins to get the most out of them.
2
u/tehawesomedragon Loki Jul 16 '15
My thoughts exactly, and I thought this was a tie-in I wouldn't be investing in...
6
u/Seedzington Jul 16 '15
My favorite tie-in an issue today. Finally a tie-in that plays a role in the main secret wars story. Especially awesome with the threat of Thanos looming, considering I read the original Infinity Gauntlet book for the first time this week!
3
u/Nairbnotsew Jul 16 '15
I'm wondering if that Thanos we see in infinity gauntlet is the 616 one. That book takes place on the wrong side of the wall as well. Unless there is 2 versions of Thanos that ended up behind the wall. Wonder if they will meet at some point if they are different versions.

Yeh! Abigail Brand is finally being used well in a story. Glad there's emphasis being put on an original awesome character instead of shoehorning a new persona into an existing character.
3
u/rpawson5771 Jul 15 '15
Interesting that Brand has a history of 30 years on Battleworld when it has been around for 8.
20
u/Jowser11 Jul 16 '15
A lot of what these people on Battle world "remember" are actually planted by Doom.
3
u/aco620 Jul 16 '15
Before this issue I was a little confused by the wall. It seemed like some sort of madness that even Doom had no control over and I didn't understand why. But then they mentioned how he waved his hand, the wall was fixed, and the Ultron army was teleported far away.
Interesting also the design choice of that white page with title card info design that we saw often in Hickman's Avengers and East of West.

u/Dorkside Trask Jul 15 '15
Silver Surfer #13
8
u/ranrubs Jul 15 '15
Yep, you should pick this one up!
4
u/Deadhydra Jul 15 '15
It was pretty awesome. Best secret wars tie in so far, I'd say.
4
u/ranrubs Jul 15 '15
{POSSIBLE SPOILERS}Yep makes me wonder If he will become the new ANAD universe's Galactus!
5
u/threebuffsharks Jul 15 '15
Haven't really followed Silver Surfer at all but wanted to with this as it's a Secret Wars tie-in. Worth it!
4
u/Jowser11 Jul 16 '15
Wait, so is this book going to actually be pretty important? I didn't expect this. Maybe it's a fake out
7
u/threebuffsharks Jul 16 '15
It's been stated in interviews that Silver Surfer will detail how the old (or I guess) new universe will come back together while all the Secret Wars stuff is happening.
3
u/Reconciled_ Jul 17 '15
This has to be the best comic released this week. I picked up all of marvels new comics this week, and none of them left me with the feeling of excitement Like this did! So excited to see what's to come. Question the character mentioned at the very end, has that character ever been mentioned prior to this issue? (I don't want to say the name just in case but I'm walking about the really huge guy)

Guardians of Knowhere #1
13
u/cappybara Jul 15 '15 edited Jul 15 '15
Wow. I was worried about picking this up with Bendis still writing, but I'm glad I did. The art fits the setting perfectly, I loved all the scifi backdrops and the background aliens (spotted a rancor on page 13!)
Plus, getting to see Rocket back in the old GotG uniform? Awesome. This is honestly restoring hope that the ANAD Guardians will be worth reading.
Edit: got excited this and posted it before I finished reading. Oh my god he just HAD to cram a "BLAM murdered you" in there...excitement tempered.
7
Jul 15 '15
Eh, I still really liked it. I haven't been reading the Bendis GotG but this issue was great.
2
u/alphasquid Jul 20 '15
BLAM murdered you? What are you referring to?
2
u/cappybara Jul 21 '15
When Bendis took over the Guardians of the Galaxy title in 2013 he gave Rocket a new catchphrase, "BLAM murdered you!" that it seems like most people (around here, at least) really hate. Definitely not a fan of it myself.
Annnnd toward the end of this issue, it somehow gets even worse with Rocket exclaiming "BLAM! Murdered all of your FACE!" Just...ugh. The first half of the issue seemed to be everything I was missing about the old Guardians, and that one line popped that bubble of hope for me.

u/EmpyreanDraco Jul 15 '15
Awesome first issue, especially with the action right from the get-go. Gamora still has the powers of the Black Vortex then, perhaps meaning she still has cosmic insight into the old multiverse (??). An eventual meeting with Thanos seems inevitable, but not before we bring Venom, Groot, and Quill back into the fray.

Inhumans: Attilan Rising #3
12
u/EmpyreanDraco Jul 15 '15
This version of Daredevil just gets better and better, and I can only assume that despite how things are stacked up against the resistance, everything is going exactly as Black Bolt has planned ;-)

3
u/cleanjerms Jul 15 '15
Can't wait to read this tonight. This has been my favorite tie-in so far. I love the Inhumans and the roles they fill are so unexpected.
5
u/mysaadlife Jul 15 '15
action packed issue, and I actually really like talking black bolt, who's turning out to be pretty badass.
3
6
u/aljy Jul 16 '15
I'm really enjoying this tie-in! love that slight twist they give us with characters we already know. This version of daredevil and black bolt in particular have been great

u/errantknight1 Jul 16 '15
I'm not finding it boring at all. Why would you say you're finding it so?
5
u/threebuffsharks Jul 16 '15
I think I'm just bored at how the character development is happening. Three issues in and it's just Doc and Captain being annoyed at each other without much development.
3
u/amidoingthisright19 Jul 16 '15
I think the conversation was great in this issue. Never being a big Hulk fan, or having read any primarily Hulk-based works, I found the conversation about gamma burning away the "impurities" of humanity (morality, etc.) to be fascinating, and will probably end up being a big theme of the series. I imagine either Steve or Bucky is going to get Hulk-ed out so we can see what they're really made of once the gamma does its work.
That, or Bucky is the Red Hulk.
Either way, I think this is my favorite SW tie-in. It's fantastic. The Devil and Cap never get old...their designs are so cool.

u/errantknight1 Jul 16 '15
Their conversation has been quite illuminating, characterwise, though, both about themselves and the world.

Captain Britain and the Mighty Defenders #1
12
u/Wildmansy Jul 15 '15
Again i have no idea where this domain is but i am very intrigued by the story. She hulk being a thor seemed overkill but her choice of hammer was incredibly apt. Also want to know why this particualr domain seems to remember their previous universe. Seems to be a deeper mystery.
Also loved that their enemies were basically judge dredd analogs.
8
u/This_Geig Jul 16 '15
It's actually "The City" (#21 on the map)
She-Hulk mentions that the south wall borders The Warzone(#22)
The artist try their best to make it the same shape
5
u/Wildmansy Jul 16 '15
Interesting. Good catch.
That means both of these domains will be wiped out by Doom and replaced with the Holy Wood and Forest Hills. Meaning this comic is set in Latverion's past. Possibly within the 8 years before the territories were stabilized. Which makes sense as to why the people in this comic remember their previous universe.
3
u/SerenityFlyer Jul 16 '15
How did you come to this conclusion that its in the past? I'm intrigued.
6
u/Wildmansy Jul 16 '15
Well u/This_Geig pointed out that the area both cities are occupying is what is now, according to the official Battleworld map by Marvel, the domain known as the City.
Yinsen city's inhabitants seem to have a stronger retention of the memory of their previous universe, so i assume its early in Latverion's creation and that God Doom's memory manipulation is not so strong or ingrained yet.
And we know God Doom either lets territories be destroyed (as mentioned in Seige) or downright orders his Thors to raze them to the ground for blasphemy (as mentioned repeatedly in this and other tie-ins).
So i think both Yinsen and Mondo get destroyed by either event, and then God Doom replaces them with two more realities that become Forest Hills and Holy Wood. That cleanly explains their locations in the Battleworld map.
Also interesting if this pans out is that Forest Hills is also experiencing the same phenomena where their people are remembering their previous universe. Might be connected might be not who knows?
2
Jul 16 '15
It changed. Lots of smaller domains are annexed in various titles. characters died in main book early on lives in spin offs.
6
Jul 16 '15
Mondo City appeared in Dark Avengers by Jeff Parker.
Yinsen City appeared in Iron Man Fatal Frontier by Kieron Gillen and Al Ewing.
This Captain Britain appeared in Age of Ultron ties in for Avengers Assemble by Al Ewing.
I'd like to call it one shot domain, except for the fact we have two issues for this title...
2
u/Wildmansy Jul 16 '15
Interesting. Can you tell me the issues where Mondo City appear? Wanna see more Dredd a la Marvel.

I have no idea what that thing at the end was. It sure as hell didn't look like Doom.
This series is a little slow, but I like it. It'll be interesting to see if it ties more into the rest of Battleworld.

Captain Marvel & The Carol Corps #2
6
u/hasnt_seen_goonies Jul 15 '15
I didn't expect this issue to stay within the domain. I thought that Carol would have made it to the void at least by the end. I enjoyed what they explored (like what /u/EmpyreanDraco said with the religious themes) but I was a bit put out by just more of a leadup to what has me excited in the book. I really dug the art in this one a lot.
2
u/Timetmannetje Jul 15 '15
So Mondo City is basicly the Judge Dredd Universe Marvelified?
4
u/Aurram Jul 15 '15
Wrong book buddy.
2
u/Timetmannetje Jul 15 '15
Damnnit. It started with Captain so I assumed it said Captain Britain. It's late, I need sleep.
10
u/EmpyreanDraco Jul 15 '15
So many religious thematic elements: faith vs. science, how can God (read: Doom) allow for bad things to happen, possibility of "miracles" being what caused the crash at the end. It wouldn't surprise me if the magical barrier mentioned to have been put in place by Doom around Limbo also prevents those in Battleworld from entering the Void.
Then again, if anyone can break through that, it's Carol, if it is true that "her powers come from the Void" upon having been chosen by Doom. Potentially, she could fly up to Knowhere and meet up with the Guardians again as well...
→ More replies (1)3
u/Seedzington Jul 16 '15
I hope that explosion doesn't mean that they will never get past the void in this series. It probably will wind up ending with Carol finally reaching it.

Moon Knight #17
3
u/mwriteword Jul 15 '15
I'll start it off I guess/hope.
This was a great issue, though not quite as satisfying of an end to the arc as #6 was. Still, I liked it and I really hope this isn't it for Moon Knight. I hope we'll see more of him in October, even if it's in someone else's book.
2
u/Natten Jul 15 '15
Wait we gotta wait till October for the next one?
4
u/mwriteword Jul 15 '15
This was the final issue of Cullen Bunn's run... there hasn't been any confirmation that a MK series will continue beyond secret wars. If there is, it'll probably be around October or later since that's when all the All-New, All-Different series start.
2
u/Natten Jul 16 '15
Well shit, that really makes the ending kinda meh
2
u/mwriteword Jul 16 '15
Yeah lol if it wasn't the ending or if I knew for sure we would be getting more is feel better about it
2
u/admiraldanger Jul 16 '15
I've saw during a recent q&a on comicvine, i think, Alonso was asked the future of moon knight after Bunn's run, and he said there would be a new writer/artist, but gave nothing else. This could all be bullshit, but my hope is moon knight gets a reboot in october/november with all the new series coming out.
2
u/mwriteword Jul 16 '15
If anyone would know, it's Alonso... I'll just hope he wasn't BSing and live with a glimmer of hope. If it is a reboot, I hope they keep his current suit(s). I've grown rather fond of both.
2
u/soulbreaker1418 Jul 16 '15
how was this series after Ellis left? i´ve read just a couple of the first issues but nothing more
5
u/mwriteword Jul 16 '15
Wood's run was pretty good. Not as good as Ellis. It has a bit more meat since its a connected arc, rather that the done-in-ones. But Bunn's run was much more similar to Ellis' both in structure and quality. Overall, a really solid run.
2
u/soulbreaker1418 Jul 16 '15
good to hear, i´ve heard so many great things about the run that having so many people on it could have affected the quality
3
u/mwriteword Jul 16 '15
yeah, i personally think the whole run was great, but i can see how a lot of people weren't as into after Ellis left. Following Ellis in any series is hard enough, but he set up a fantastic 6 issues.
→ More replies (1)2
u/Hortonamos Jul 16 '15
I actually thought Wood's run was better than Bunn's. I was skeptical after Ellis left, but he won me over quickly. I've been less impressed with Bunn. It's not bad, but if it weren't ending this month, I would probably be taking it off of my pull.
3
u/mwriteword Jul 16 '15
I can see that, yeah. Totally understandable. My main complaint with Wood's run was the ending just felt a little anti-climactic after building up the whole arc. But I still really liked it overall.

The big reveal was so predictable I kept having to go back and make sure it hadn't been revealed already, but nevertheless a pretty enjoyable read. I really think Ian should be Captain America more than Sam Wilson, albeit Wilson's experience.
2
u/errantknight1 Jul 16 '15 edited Jul 18 '15
I kind of resent Ian and his sister's very existence, which makes it hard to enjoy interations with then. I don't actively hate Ian, though, unlike his sister. I'd much prefer to have Bucky back as Cap than either Sam or Ian, but really, I just want Steve back as Cap. I'm getting kind of sick of him getting repeatedly sidelined. Edit: Although I did really love BuckyCap. It was incredibly important for his character and was a great storyline. Now it just seems like they're sidelining him because they don't have a writer for the title who understands him.
6
u/EmpyreanDraco Jul 15 '15
Not sure what to think on this. Didn't really buy into the character in the beginning, warmed up to Ian as things went along, and then a WTF?!-type happening at the end. The other dude dying would've meant more if we hadn't just met him (sort of felt pointless to have him).
3
u/Thomas__Covenant Jul 17 '15
Is this comic based on a previous arc, like Planet Hulk, Siege, etc? Just seems like a lot of backstory that I'm missing.
For the record, I don't read Captain America solo books, but I know the basic history. I've never heard of Ian until this issue, but I do know who Zola is and all that. Just curious if I need to know more back history before moving forward. Thanks.
2
u/JakeTheHawk Jul 28 '15
Cap got sucked into Dimension Z for about ten-fifteen years. This was an alternate dimension made by/ruled by Zola. Ian is Zola's son who Cap rescued early on in his time there. Cap spent the majority of his time raising Ian and evading Zola. Ian thinks of Cap as his father now. Near the end, Cap gets sent back to our world and its revealed that barely ten minutes has passed. Ian appears shortly later and is now all growed up and stuff.

liking this so far, even though it really has nothing to do with secret wars.

u/Nairbnotsew Jul 16 '15
This one is apperently a call back to the old pulp comics marvel did in the 40's/50's.
3
u/JLazarus Jul 16 '15
That, to me, is one of the things about the series that makes me love it. It tells a story in one of the nations of Battleworld, but does its own things and requires no outside reading to tell a complete story.
5
u/k1rra Jul 16 '15
I'm really enjoying this series, it's probably one of my favourite tie ins. More people should read this imo.
The last two issues had a very agent Carter vibe to it, but this issue kind of changed that, and it's definitely become it's own thing. It's a great change of pace from marvel, as it doesn't have the stereotypical 'suoerheros' that you see from them, rather something else.
3
3
u/RRodd Jul 17 '15
As I was reaching the end of this issue I was thinking about how they wouldn't kill Karl, but that ending, I wasn't expecting it, Ouch!(?)
3
u/RussMIV Jul 19 '15
Am I the only one?
I seriously dislike this entire series. I was fine with the first issue, but then it nosedived in issues 2 and 3. It's certainly my least favorite of all the Secret War titles.

Can we talk about Years of Future Past for a second... I was really disappointed by the reveal of Cameron's mother. I really wanted a young love story in the midst of tragedy and strife... now all that build up is for not. I mean I appreciate that Bennett acknowledges the disappointment, even pokes fun at it... but I left the issue with just four words "that was such crap."
Anyone else feel the same way? Am I missing something? Is there older continuity I am missing?
PS: i love the fact Nightcrawler is a Priest, though I don't really understand how he became one in a wolrd hating mutants... does no one notice the blue fur on Sunday (assuming people worship Doom on Sunday, it could very well be Tuesday.. you know what I mean!)

So what you're saying is that I'm not missing out? Yeah, this series has been a little less amazing than I'd hoped.

Fun but not worth picking up. Fun to see all the alt-world versions of Wolverine, kind of like how it was done in Deadpool Kills Deadpool. There was a Galactus Wolverine, a MODOK Wolverine, Gwen-verine, Ant-Man Wolverine, etc etc. Story was whatever.
The second story with Deadpool from 1872 trying to ride a Devil Dinosaur was funny though.

There was an arc of Exiles a few years ago that did a much better job with the endless army of Wolverine variants.

I did too when I realized it was just gonna be side characters. I thought it was gonna be like the AVX tie ins where it would be like Colossus vs Red Hulk and show the different fighting going on during Secret Wars like The Cabal vs The Thors or Phoenix Cyke vs God Doom.
