[photoshopbattles] A photoshop of a beard onto a cat spirals hilariously out of control.

At some point someone added a face to the handprint on the fridge.

Also, I feel the quality of bestof has gone down since I subscribed to this subreddit, or maybe I've changed.

it seems to consist more of "I found this to be kinda funny" or "somewhat thought provoking."

Do you get link karma for these submissions? If so, disabling that might be a great way to get higher quality submissions.

20

u/[deleted] Jun 09 '13

Yes, you do.

There is no way to disable link karma, the only way is to force self posts.

12

u/Hey_Meoq Jun 09 '13

Yeah that worked out real well for /r/atheism

13

u/dylan522p Jun 09 '13

Once all the whiny bitches leave, it will at least not be that bad. Still dumb but not nearly as bad.

4

u/[deleted] Jun 09 '13

Cause /r/atheism was such a bastion of intellectual thought before the switch...

-21

u/only_says_fetch_yeah Jun 09 '13

Fetch yeah!

8

u/randomsnark Jun 09 '13

Stop trying to make "fetch yeah" happen. It's not going to happen.

2

u/seriousherenow Jun 09 '13

Getting real tired of your shit, Deborah....

1

u/toxicomano Jun 09 '13

That's what I thought.... oh well.

21

u/[deleted] Jun 08 '13

That one talking about life in a dictatorship was pretty good yesterday. But yeh this sub is filled with inane bullshit instead of actually good content.

yeah, I enjoyed that post but it was really fishy. he wrote as if english was his first language, and I began to wonder exactly how much time he's actually spent living there.

0

u/crazdave Jun 09 '13

And that invalidates the post that was bestof'd? Because it was full of good points.

4

u/Upvote_Responsibly Jun 09 '13

Maybe Reddit just sucks now

2

u/el_muerte28 Jun 09 '13

I am going to upvote irresponsibly tonight. Watcha gonna do?

1

u/DQEight Jun 09 '13

I GOTTA BELIEVE!

3

u/imdwalrus Jun 09 '13

But all jokes aside, I agree, there hasn't been a really best-of worthy post here in months.

Maybe because default subreddits were banned?

1

u/Zrk2 Jun 09 '13

That's because the default subs were removed.

8

u/WombatDominator Jun 09 '13

Because we removed doing /r/bestof from things from default subreddits.

3

u/Sabin10 Jun 09 '13

When it stopped being "best of" and became "best of relatively inactive subrreddits only" this was bound to happen. Ignoring 90% of potential posts because the come from the popular parts of reddit isn't working out so well anymore now that we're scrapping the bottom of the barrel.

Here's the deal: I think for a subreddit to stay focused as it gets more than ~10K subscribers, you need a few things:

1. A theme that inherently invites discussion

Notice how your comment is at the top of this comments section. That tells you that the people who vote on posts and the people who visit the comments are very different samples of a population. By default, newcomers will simply want to laugh and upvote, leading to what I call the /r/funny effect: it's impossible to enjoy /r/funny while thinking about post "quality," but it's good for a quick laugh. If these mindless upvoters are at odds with the original intent of the subreddit, you're going to have a bad time. Subreddits such as /r/nfl and /r/malefashionadvice are large, but because they are constantly discussing things, there is decent alignment on what makes a quality post.

2. A STRONG sidebar

The sidebar of /r/bestof, in my opinion, is quite weak. Put yourself in a new subscriber's shoes; does the sidebar clearly state that this subreddit is for thought-provoking material only? Maybe I get that idea, but then what's the difference between /r/bestof and /r/DepthHub? The rules and guidelines must be clearly defined so everyone who is paying attention starts from common ground. Those who do not pay attention can be directed to the sidebar and rightfully reprimanded. /r/askscience is an excellent example of this.

3. Active moderation

Mostly self-explanatory. What is the law without enforcement? It's not a trivial thing to provide, though, as mods are just volunteers with their own opinions and (possibly) lives outside of reddit. Again, /r/askscience is a great example of doing this right.

Exceptions

Other large subreddits "succeed" when focus is not important, of course. Subreddits like /r/pics and /r/mildlyinteresting have very open-ended themes so they have it easy.

edit: misworded

u/Ryan_Hernandez Jun 09 '13

The handprint is Wilson to compliment Tom Hanks from Cast Away.

0

u/mrpunaway Jun 09 '13

He added the face to Wilson and the Castaway picture at the same time.

0

u/Ryan_Hernandez Jun 09 '13

I know that. I didn't say anything about the order in which they were added.

2

u/[deleted] Jun 09 '13

/r/bestof has never been bestof anything substantial, it's always been the 70th percentile stuff that someone thought was cool enough to say, "I reddit on reddit in reddit". It's a meta- /r/mildlyinteresting.

1

u/Shishakli Jun 09 '13

I agree... But clearly someone liked it... It got up votes

1

u/dopafiend Jun 09 '13

The no default subs rule killed this place.

/r/defaultgems just isn't close to the same.

I loved bestof because it had default sub posts, I'm unsubscribed from nearly all defaults and if used to be my window into the big reddit's.

0

u/[deleted] Jun 09 '13

Also, I feel the quality of bestof has gone down since I subscribed to this subreddit, or maybe I've changed.

Lol, I felt the same way two years ago. The new rules helped and hurt in some ways. When this was a ~10k subreddit every single link was fucking gold.

-1

u/Stillbornchild Jun 09 '13

Nah it's just another cancerous subreddit gone to waste.

66

u/brat1 Jun 08 '13

LOL BEARD EVERYWHERE SO MANY LULZ

22

u/newtothelyte Jun 09 '13

HILARITY ENSUES

1

u/dopafiend Jun 09 '13

Wow did that actually die down?

I don't think I've seen it in forever, used to be a third of the front page titles in like 2010.

u/MilesDavisbioexcerpt Jun 09 '13

I remember one time we was coming down to The Street to play from uptown and Bird had this white bitch in the back of the taxi with us. He done already shot up a lot of heroin and now the motherfucker's eating chicken — his favorite food—and drinking whiskey and telling the bitch to get down and suck his dick. Now, I wasn't used to that kind of shit back then — I was hardly even drinking, I think I had just started smoking — and I definitely wasn't into drugs yet because I was only nineteen years old and hadn't seen no shit like that before. Anyway, Bird noticed that I was getting kind of uptight with the woman sucking all over his dick and everything, and

66

him sucking on her pussy. So he asked if something was wrong with me, and if his doing this was bothering me. When I told him that I felt uncomfortable with them doing what they was doing in front of me, with her licking and slapping her tongue like a dog all over his dick and him making all that moaning noise in between taking bites of chicken, I told him, "Yeah, it's bothering me." So you know what that motherfucker said? He told me that if it was bothering me, then I should turn my head and not pay attention. 1 couldn't believe that shit, that he actually said that to me. The cab was real small and we all three were in the backseat, so where was I supposed to turn my head? What I did was to stick my head outside the taxi window, but I could still hear them motherfuckers getting down and in between, Bird smacking his lips all over that fried chicken. Like I said, he was something, all right.

So I looked up to Bird for being a great musician more than I liked him as a person. But he treated me like his son, and he and Dizzy were like father figures to me.

3

u/brat1 Jun 09 '13

Thank you for that. I guess it was, indeed, the most relevant shit you could have replied to my previous comment.

5

u/BigBassBone Jun 09 '13

It's an excerpt from Miles Davis's autobiography, it seems. A bizarre novelty account.

5

u/BklynMoonshiner Jun 09 '13

Quite possibly one of my favorite passages from Miles' Autobiography.

~holds up spork~

56

u/Darthsanta13 Jun 09 '13

I would not be upset at all if /r/photoshopbattles got added to the list of subreddits you aren't allowed to post to /r/bestof. I feel as though it as well as /r/explainliveiama posts that make it here aren't really "hidden gems", they're just slightly above average examples of what those subreddits do every single day.

I mean I guess people vote for what they like, but in my experience nothing I've ever seen from either of those two subreddits goes beyond a simple joke and it seems like those that enjoy that type of content could just subscribe to the subreddits themselves and leave /r/bestof for other content.

37

u/rawveggies Jun 09 '13

I'm a mod over there, so I am probably biased, but I think Reddit would be shooting itself in the foot if it disallowed links from bestof to a subreddit that only allows original content, and is different than what you see on almost every other subreddit.

You can use RES to filter links to subreddits you personally don't like, rather than asking that no one else be able to see them.

One of the great things about having /r/bestof only allow non-defaults is that subreddits like /r/photoshopbattles get traffic boosts from a default sub, and our largest spikes in traffic and new subscribers, by far, is from this subreddit.

New people that like photoshops, whether making them or looking at them, get to find out about it through this subreddit.

Reddit is constantly growing, and new users come in through the defaults. To restrict one subreddit from the best method for new users to find smaller subreddits would not be fair to those that might enjoy it's content, and it would be unfair to the subreddit and hamper it's growth.

You can look at the content as mostly just a simple joke, but a lot of people admire the skill, time, and talent that goes into making photoshops, and although people there are doing it every day, for a lot of people the content there is among the best reddit has to offer.

2

u/[deleted] Jun 09 '13

I think the point is that people find a few select subreddits like /r/explainlikeIAmA or /r/photoshopbattles which create content and then just pick any random post and treat it like it is something special.

Furthermore, if you want to listen to the sidebar, a front page post on a subreddit with 150k subscribers isn't exactly a "hidden gem". The real kind of posts that best of was made for are the ones on relatively unknown subreddits that come out of nowhere and are insightful. Not a poem about nuclear physics after specifically requesting a poem about nuclear physics.

3

u/sellyme Jun 09 '13

I feel like it's a bit counter-productive to ban good content because there's a lot of it.

2

u/amp13 Jun 09 '13

yeah, i thought this was the whole point of that subreddit

1

u/PlayTheBanjo Jun 09 '13

I agree but I've seen a few /r/explainlikeIAMA posts on here that really deserved /r/bestof status, like the one where someone said something like, explain what's about to happen to me like I'm a dog who's about to be put down or something along those lines.

53

u/sdflack Jun 09 '13

Animated for your convenience.

4

u/Pelagine Jun 09 '13

You are awesome! That made me giggle out loud. :D

31

u/afsdjkll Jun 09 '13

Hilarious is quite subjective I suppose.

22

u/freezerburn666 Jun 09 '13

hooo boy.. that sucked

10

u/[deleted] Jun 09 '13

Someone needs to make a Gif out of all these changing from start to finish.

38

u/Zuggible Jun 09 '13

Here you go.

Had to shrink it to meet the 2MB limit, though.

12

u/TheAdAgency Jun 09 '13

You are a star, I award you this relevant pic.

2

u/[deleted] Jun 09 '13

Relevant as fuck.

2

u/RedditorJoker Jun 09 '13

What the hell is that from?

2

u/mrpunaway Jun 09 '13

Aliens Gave My Cat A Beard

4

u/[deleted] Jun 09 '13

THE American classic.

2

u/[deleted] Jun 09 '13

Fantastic, thanks.

9

u/Mavrakk Jun 08 '13

Hey if y'all think anyone deserves credit give it to mobuco. I'm pretty shitty at PS but just wanted to keep egging him on. You were a good rival Mobuca O7.

9

u/mobuco Jun 09 '13

Hey it was fun...didn't think it was best of quality, but whatever.

7

u/Mavrakk Jun 09 '13

I was surprised you didn't lens flare the unity ring. But good on you man.

4

u/mobuco Jun 09 '13

I was going to but didn't want to over do it.

8

u/test822 Jun 09 '13

this blows

7

u/[deleted] Jun 09 '13

The beard on the thermostat was the highlight for me.

6

u/Chiiaki Jun 09 '13

Once Wilson popped up it was over for me lol.

2

u/Mavrakk Jun 09 '13

It seemed obvious at the time. I loved how he put a bearded Tom hanks on my clean faced hanks.

3

u/[deleted] Jun 09 '13

4

u/[deleted] Jun 09 '13

Haha! Wow! Truly outrageous!

2

u/sfled Jun 09 '13

So, it's beards all the way down?

3

u/ThreeHolePunch Jun 09 '13

It's official, /r/bestof is a pile of steaming shit. Bye guys.

2

u/Socratesticles Jun 09 '13

It felt like a big game of spot the difference.

2

u/purplecupp3d Jun 09 '13

Nothing best worthy!

2

u/fuzeebear Jun 08 '13

You know how some laughs feel like a slightly musical tickle to your center? And how some, commonly referred to as "belly laughs", seem to consume your entire body in a joyous exclamation? I got there today, thanks to this series of images. Thanks for this post, it made my day.

TL;DR: LOL

1

u/augustusrumpus Jun 09 '13

Just go to SomethingAwful, this shit happens every day.

1

u/BondoMondo Jun 09 '13

make a gif!

1

u/e_x_i_t Jun 09 '13

It took me longer than I'll admit to realize that beards were being added to things in the background. I was rather puzzled as to why there were repostings of the same picture, then I saw the AC meter had a beard.

1

u/pantsmeplz Jun 09 '13

where's an animated gif of this?

1

u/Timofmars Jun 09 '13

Batman and... Cat... cat?

1

u/Smitty13733 Jun 09 '13

Thank you everyone that has participated. I have not laughed that hard in a long time and enjoyed every second of it. Because of this I am late meeting my g/f for a late night dinner, I have not finished my end of shift paper work and I am now getting overtime. Regrets? Not a damn one.

1

u/quirkelchomp Jun 09 '13

I remember this being done back when Osama Bin Laden was first announced to have been killed. 4Chan was shopping his beard everywhere, including loads of cats.

1

u/Blagginspaziyonokip Jun 09 '13

Hardly bestof material

1

u/Do_you_even_triforce Jun 09 '13

Someone should make a GIF of all the pictures.

1

u/[deleted] Jun 09 '13

1

u/specterofthepast Jun 09 '13

That looks like TB...

1

u/babydoll1992 Jun 09 '13

I think the cat pulls it off best.

1

u/[deleted] Jun 09 '13

Retarded

1

u/Shenaniganz08 Jun 09 '13

Yeah this is really not bestof material.

The whole point of photoshop battles is to one up each other... so this i neither funny, nor "spiraling out of control"

1

u/porvidacs Jun 09 '13

Thank you for this!

0

u/Helotron3000 Jun 09 '13

I have never laughed that hard at photoshop before

0

u/NunsOnFire Jun 09 '13

The beard on the thermostat. Holy Jesus, my sides are nonexistent.

0

u/Abroc Jun 09 '13

That was out of control.

0

u/[deleted] Jun 09 '13

Hehe beards....

0

u/Irrel_M Jun 09 '13

After Mavrakk's stunning rebuttal, mobuco had no choice but to beard it on.

0

u/frickinsweetdude Jun 09 '13

This really isn't funny. This is hilarious

0

u/[deleted] Jun 09 '13

The thermostat beard almost killed me

0

u/thatfookinschmuck Jun 09 '13

Wow and that took place between just two people..

0

u/KnottyKitty Jun 09 '13

Loving this at [5]. I'm not sure if it's really "Best Of", but it's funny. The thermostat beard made me laugh out loud. Unexpected.

0

u/DSEthno23 Jun 09 '13

THIS NEEDS MORE UPVOTES!

Sorry, but this one won: http://www.reddit.com/r/photoshopbattles/comments/1fuywm/my_roommates_cat/cae9afw. He got all the people in the background to have beards. The rest were just stupid.

Beard on the thermostat got me.
