Sample Status Sample Status/Processing Monthly Megathread - April 2025

Welcome to the Sample Status/Processing Megathread, also known as the Waiting, Whining, and Wishing thread. This monthly megathread (posted at the beginning of each month) allows you post your sample processing timelines, as well as to discuss and comment about any questions, concerns, or rants while you wait. Although not directly handled by 23andMe, shipping status may also be discussed in the thread. We recommend sorting the comments by "new" as this is a month long megathread.

You can share your sample status timeline here in one or two ways. The first way is to take a screenshot of your timeline, upload the screenshot to imgur, and share the image link here. The second way is to simply copy and paste the start and completion dates for each step. Here is the text template:

PSA [Megathread] 23andMe Has Filed for Chapter 11 Bankruptcy. FAQs and What You Need to Know

Information is taken from this post on the 23andMe website. Emphasis and bold text maybe added by us. Any additional posts regarding this topic may be removed.

On March 23, 2025, 23andMe took an important step forward by entering a voluntary Chapter 11 restructuring and sale process.

Through this process, we will seek to find a partner who shares our commitment to customer data privacy and allows our mission of helping people access, understand and benefit from the human genome to live on. Importantly, this step allows us to continue operating our business while we chart the path forward. Our press release is available linked here.

What This Means For You

Your data remains protected. The Chapter 11 filing does not change how we store, manage, or protect customer data. Our users’ privacy and data are important considerations in any transaction, and we remain committed to our users’ privacy and to being transparent with our customers about how their data is managed. Any buyer of 23andMe will be required to comply with applicable law with respect to the treatment of customer data.

Your access is unchanged. You continue to have full access to your account, genetic reports, and any stored data.

23andMe is still open for business. Orders and subscriptions will continue as normal, and any purchases or genetic testing kits sent in for processing will be handled without disruption.

Please see the link for additional FAQs.

There has been a lot of fearmongering and unwarranted mass panic. The company is still operating and has funds set aside to continue while the bankruptcy goes forward. This process can take a few months to possibly over a year in rare cases. Your data is fine and nothing new will happen to it while this is ongoing. In the event that 23andMe is sold, there will almost certainly be a period for you to delete your data then, if you so wish, before anything is transferred to the new operators. Just know that action will be permanent and that you will no longer receive updates and insights to your results in the future.

Family Problems/Discovery Found out I have no shared DNA with my dad 😱

I'm still processing everything as I only found out a couple hours ago. I was at brunch with one of my best friends and told her that on my recent trip to Thailand, I had my dad do a 23andMe test kit and I'm still waiting for the results. It just so happened as I pulled up my phone while telling the story I got an email saying his results were in and that we have no shared DNA. I was kind of numb from the shock and I just started processing it out loud with my friend and what the scenarios could be. Was there a chance that it's an error? Now that I've had a couple hours I'm pretty sure it's accurate. I've always had an inkling as we don't look alike. But I also just look A LOT like my mom and so does my sister. But she has some resemblance of him at least. My sister and I are also 13.5 years apart. I'm the younger one.

The reason I wanted to test him was because I did this test more than 5 years ago and the percentage of my results kept changing. First it said I was 46% Chinese (Guangdong) and 54% Broadly Southeast Asian with a high percentage of being Vietnamese. Which at the time I thought was half accurate because my dad is 100% Chinese as my paternal grandparents immigrated to Thailand from South China. I was frustrated that it kept thinking I was Vietnamese instead of Thai. I would check the app like once a year max and even with more and more data from other Southeast Asians through the years - I was still Vietnamese with even higher percentages. Mind you all my maternal side of the family is Thai (Isaan) and I was born in Thailand. So all I wanted was to "help the system" by adding my biological dad, have his DNA linked to me and show up in the system that I'm more-likely half Thai and half Chinese and NOT Vietnamese. Well it turns out right now I'm basically not Chinese at all and on top of that my dad and I have no shared DNA.

My parents are both old (70's) and I don't want to give anyone a heart attack nor devastate my dad - despite us not being close at all when I was younger - but he 100% thinks I'm his. My mom traveled internationally for work a lot while we lived in Thailand when I was younger and my parents were separated pretty much right when I was born (he had a whole relationship with another woman while she was away for months at a time) and finally divorced when I was 5. He has never not claimed me as his despite not really living in the same house my whole life, has always supporter me financially, and only agreed to this test cause I begged him.

I was always really intrigued by other people finding family secrets through DNA testing but never thought it would be me one day. Today's been a crazy day.

Discussion When are 23andMe actually gonna do yearly updates like AncestryDNA, and add more to their reference panel?

I like how 23andMe have the regions of the countries as a makeup for their reference panel , but they still need to make some updates as it kind of gets boring over time

I suspect the “Iranian, Caucasian, and Mesopotamian” is Iraqi, since family history says we have relatives that came from Iraq at some point.

Discussion White Americans have you discovered you have a African Y-haplogroup?

It is quite common for African Americans to trace their male-line to a white man. However I am curious how common it was for the opposite scenario to occur? Like this: ➡️👨🏿👨🏾👨🏽👨🏻👨🏼👨🏻‍🦰➡️

Sharing my 23 and me results which weren't too surprising being Hispanic. I was surprised though with the ashkenazi jewish and the 3.2% unassigned.

Does anyone else have unassigned results? And why does this category exist?

Question / Help Any Indians out there score Indonesian, Thai, Khmer, Myanmar?

Since India is literally right next to Myanmar this is highly likely but I wanted to ask.

For background I'm half Chinese and quarter Ashkenazi Jewish and quarter Sicilian. Is it surprising for me to 50% Chinese and nothing else because my mom thinks it means she 100% does it work like that I want some explanation

Question / Help Family says we're Greek but results say otherwise?

Post image
93 Upvotes

Title, for the most part. My family has always said we're Greek. One of my grandparents immigrated to the States from Greece in her teens, and her eventual husband's parents both immigrated through Ellis Island and tracking their Census records- switch back and forth between declaring Greek and Turkish nationality/origin.

Any idea what the history behind that may be and why my results would be the way that they are?

Results Very confused about my results.

I am from Denmark, and as far as i know i am Danish. Does this mean however that one of my grandparents is German or Dutch? Also the 0.7% anatolian how far back is that? Also my paternal line is I-P109 and my maternal is K2b. What does all of this mean? Sorry for all of the questions. I am just very confused and feel like the 23andme page is quite bare with information. Thank you for your answers and time :)

Question / Help Who is my sisters dad?

Post image
7 Upvotes

We need help in the right direction… we are messaging people but no one so far has responded.

My “sister” (not blood related now), was adopted in 1981. Her biological mom told her that my dad was her dad (clearly not lol). So. This is the closest we may have. This “BL” profile shows us who shes related and how my sister is related to them too.

Would my sister’s dad be Lenard (shows he was born in 69) and BLs uncle?

Or are we off here?

Question / Help EDIT TO CLARIFY

Thumbnail

I posted this earlier but what I meant to ask more specifically is whether it is normal to see such a big difference (50% vs 90%) in 23andMe ancestry confidence levels? Some regions disappear completely or get grouped into broader categories at the 90% level. Just curious if others have experienced this too and how you interpret those different confidence levels in your own reports.

Nothing to shocking, I have a couple grandfathers marked as B and M on census records so it’s pretty neat to see where they may have came from. Egyptian DNA in Appalachia (Eastern Kentucky) Kinda feel like this confirms our Melungeon heritage but who knows! Haha last photo is of me

Traits Red Heads Who Tested Negative for Red Hair, Has Your Hair Color Changed with Age/Stress?

There Agouti Signaling Protein (ASIP) gene can bind to the MC1R gene (that 23 and me tests for and accounts for most red heads), causing less dark pigmentation and more red or blonde.

I only discovered how crazy active my adrenal glands are and it makes sense for what’s become of my hair ☹️

Hey! I was adopted at birth, and know a little about my background. I did AncestryDNA in 2014 and it said I was roughly 42% Scandinavian (I think Danish?) but 23 is saying German. Idk if that is correct. It’s also showing waaaaay more from the UK than Ancestry did. And less Western Asian. Feel free to comment on anything. Also, I found a half sister!!!!! I am feeling all the feels 😭

Question / Help Question about downloading DNA

Hello, I want to delete my dna samples soon but I wonder what exactly I need to download. I have already downloaded these things:

Reports Summary Ancestry Composition Raw Data Download Ancestry Composition Data Download Family Tree Data Raw Data

But these things are still pending approval:

Imputed Genotype Data R6 Phased Genotype Data Profile Data DaNA Insights Data

Are these very important or can I also download them if I have my samples destroyed?
