I was just today thinking about the classic "what would you do if you won the lottery?" thing, and I actually concluded if I suddenly became a millionaire I'd probably collapse by the stress of it before I could do anything with the money lol
Like can you tell your family? Your mom? I wouldn't mind helping people out with money, but I'm autistic, how do I figure out the social rules and fairness and expectations of giving who how much and what they want or ???? Do I have to tell the government? They pay me for staying alive despite my disability, but I've got a one time million now? I feel like I should tell the government? Do you have to divide it over multiple banks? Will they ask questions? Will I be robbed or murdered? Can I tell my dog??
No, you can keep the 26M and give me the ice cream :(
Don't tell anyone immediately, the government already knows and takes taxes from the winnings before you see a dime, FDIC insurance is $250k per account (iirc. it could be per person per bank), people might ask questions, lottery winners that go public do have a higher murder rate, only the dog can know.
I've got a plan for if I ever win.
1) lawyer up; they are the only people that get to know right away
2) gotta figure out if lump sum or annuity is better (lump sum is always better, however as much as I plan shit out I don't know if I can trust myself with that much money)
3) actually claim the prize, preferably anonymously (depends on the state, if in the US.)
4) back to lawyers to set up trusts/other funds for my younger siblings. (I would for my parents but I know they'll blow all the money immediately on dumb shit so they don't get any) I would also use this time to figure out how to give my very very close (like ones I know would die for me) friends some money cause they've been struggling and I'm bringing the boys up with me.
5) if lump sum, bank it (probably at a wealth management place) and set up monthly allowance for myself for a few years and reinvest the rest, to eventually live off the interest.
6) keep working like nothing happened, I currently love my job so I would keep working. Maybe make a donation to the school anonymously to improve the program I work for only to be revealed when I'm dead or something.
7)figure out a way to pay back family who've helped me out without seeming too suspicious. Ofc never letting them know how much I actually won, but something plausible like "yeah here's the money you've loaned me throughout the years, I won like $250,000 on a scratcher. Nothing massive and I'd feel bad if I had this and didn't pay you back so here do with it what you want." (Plausible cause I do love me some scratchers and my family knows that) Meanwhile I hit a $500M Powerball.
8) all that being said... Hopefully no one finds this comment๐
Also... If I actually hit that, you could probably make damn good money on betting whether or not I actually stick to the plan. I'd give it +750 on not sticking to it.
You've really thought about this! I'd still rather not though ๐
I'm in Belgium and there is a "win for life" game ass well, where you'd get some money each month, like an allowance. Can also be substantial, but not so overwhelming and complicated. I think I'd go with that! Might be similar to lump sum Vs annuity?
You could just continue living normally, except with a lot more money to save every month, no financial stress and you could still give the extras to family, friends or charity if you'd like.
This is pretty much what Iโve come up with as well - not that I ever buy lottery tickets or anything so it doesnโt even matter. ๐ But, I would 100% quit my job, possibly sell my place, and most definitely take off on world travel forโฆ a very long time. Of course, this would be after all the other steps are completed and I have the funds put away for certain people.
Oh yeah world travel is def on the list eventually. I want to take the boys on a year long vacation following F1 around and driving every track we can. We're all car guys so it would be amazing
Lol, there are two different types of neuro diverse people... those who already have a plan for becoming millionaires, and those who are already overwhelmed by the idea ๐ ๐ ๐
