Discussion How dangerous would an adult Howler be? (Theory/Discussion)

The howlers were one most dangerous challenges for the Animorphs, if they weren't basically children the Animorphs would have been goners.

Fan Works Accidentally wrote in Marco into my novel...

I am working on a time travelling / space travelling series, where several characters with these abilitiies make appearances in a "if you know, you know" kind of wink to other fans and fandoms. One of the characters is based on Marco from Animorphs, who has moved to another multiverse and has found a job and community that accepts him and lets him be. In other words, he's a bouncer at a bar that's a haven for time and space travelers.

It's truly a "if you know, you know" kind of thing — I call him Marc, there's a moment a gorilla shows up, but mostly, he's just a man in his 40s getting by in life. Think Joel in The Last Of Us vibes.

But now my beta readers are asking for his back story and saying they love him and I don't know what to do — admit he's from Animorphs, or pivot and create a true hommage?

Fan Works Omnibus covers

Hey all, thought I would share this little passion project inspired by this post. Respect the original attempt in that post but thought I could do something more in line with my personal tastes. Have been rereading the series for the first time since I was a kid in eformat and reformatting the books for a physical printing for my personal library. It's cheaper than getting the originals, tbh. Using Reedsy to do the formatting, then plan is to print through Lulu due to the 800 page limit they hav and I've used them before.

I have a total of 6 volumes planned. Three are done, with the fourth almost done, the fifth started, and the sixth outlined. I did cut out some books (all Helmacrons, MM2 and #11, and the books generally considered bad/out of character/left unresolved plot threads).

I'm using the cover used by that original omnibus attempt, then using the original art from the series to give each volume a unique look. I also tied some books together into essentially one story where appropriate (David Trilogy is one chapter, the Taylor books are together, The Arrival and the Other are combined into what I call "The Andalite Legacy," Books 45 + 46 are together in one chapter, 49-54 are treated as a 6 part chapter).

I've left most of the text intact (felt weird editing some things out, but the goal was to try and modernize for my wife and future kids) but updated some references and removed some of the recaps where needed (ex: David Trilogy lost some because I presumed a reader would be reading things relatively quickly and wouldn't appreciate a summary of something they just read.) It's harder to cut those recaps than one might think, especially if the goal is trying to preserve the text as unmodified as possible. I did eliminate goofs/inconsistencies, at least as described by Seerowpedia, as well as make the changes that Scholastic made in the repub of books 1-8.

Apart from reading, I used these recommendations/reviews to help figure out skips:
1. https://docs.google.com/spreadsheets/d/1-MrWavvGxyyHQaX1slnuuUfHBnW2bE08MYPXOGN0wlU/edit?gid=0#gid=0

4. https://demenior.tumblr.com/post/130017671259/dems-read-itskip-it-guide-to-animorphs/amp

Contents:
Book 1: 1-7, MM1
Book 2: 8-10, 13, Andalite Chronicles, 15, 16
Book 3: 18, 19, David Trilogy, HBC, 23, 26, 27
Book 4: 29, MM3, 30-31, 33
Book 5: MM4, Ellimist
Book 6: 49-54

Lot of millennial readers cite Harry Potter for igniting that love of reading. For me, personally, it was Alexandre Dumas and Animorphs (odd combo, I know.) Rereading both in the times we live in now have been a breath of fresh air, for me.

I came back to Animorphs because of those graphic novels. However one may feel about their quality, it finally gave me enough of a kick in the butt to reread these after having the ebooks rot away on a harddrive for so long. While the graphic novels may likely be done, we always have the text.

I'll update more when all the books are finally printed. Happy to hear what everyone thinks of this! Also happy to hear arguments on cut books to reinclude! I know cutting the Prophecy might be divisive choice haha.

Currently Reading Didn't realize it would be so hard to find the books

Post image

I got really into Animorphs like in 2021 and started collecting them. I like reading them alongside the audiobooks. I'm still pretty early in the series (book 16?) And boy is it a pain to collect them!

I got lucky once when I went to goodwill because somebody had dropped off their collection and they had like 17 or so books on the shelf! And that was pretty close to when I decided I want to start collecting them.. picked them up so quick! Haven't ever been this lucky since but im hoping to find the later books somewhere. Been using some stuff like Thriftbooks to get some of the books but that can be expensive too!

Here's what I have so far!

Fan Works Escafil device - dnd edition!

(unsure if this is the correct flair, let me know and I can change it)

This blue 6 inch cube can hold 10 charges, but it only has 1 charge available. When you expend a charge, you instantaneously grant one willing creature who is touching the cube the power to morph. After that, the power is inside of that creature. The cube regains one expended charge when a morph capable creature dies or nothlits.

Acquiring DNA

When you touch a beast or humanoid other than yourself, you can instantaneously absorb that creature's DNA. Thereafter, you can "morph" the target.

Morphing

Morphing is a process that takes one minute, and you must use your action every round to continue morphing. Your equipment and clothing do not transform along with you, unless the clothing is skintight. While you are morphed, all your statistics, including your mental statistics, are changed to the statistics of the morph. You retain your alignment and your personality. You remain in this form until you demorph to your true form. Demorphing back takes an equivalent time to morphing.

Thought Speak

When you are morphed, you can speak telepathically to any creature you can see within 60 feet of you. Your communication doesn't give the creature the ability to respond to you telepathically.

Healing

When you morph, you are healed to the hit point maximum of the morph. When you demorph, you are healed to your hit point maximum.

Nothlit

If you stay morphed for longer than 2 hours, you will become trapped, unable to demorph to your true form. A Nothlit is a person who has become trapped in morph in this way.

Second hand books

This sub very randomly popped up on my feed months ago, I used to be very into the books and fanfics back in the early 2000s and the nostalgia hit me hard lol I really want to do a re-read but it’s been over a decade since I donated my entire collection. I thought I’d just start hitting second hand stores since that’s how I got half my books back then and my first stop was goodwill. I guess they now hold back those type of books to be sold online and they only had the most pitiful collection of books half of which probably are overdue to be recycled. Is that what it’s like at all big second hand stores? I don’t want to waste time driving out to not find anything

Fan Works Yeerk Casing/Battle Armor Lore/World-building: Based on Ray Cusick Dalek Redesign

Thumbnail

I recently made a post about Dalek redesigns and realized that the Ray Cusick reimagining of the Dalek casing would make for a good Yeerk Casing/Battle Armor.

The aesthetic fits more with Animorphs than Doctor who, fitting as this design is early 90s. The odd shape and parts would work in universe and be no stranger than the other aliens.

Lore-wise, the Yeerks are limited by how many hosts they have. Having a casing that allows for mobilization would be a boon, especially if it has Kandrona Rays and other life support.

Combat-wise, this makes the Yeerks more dangerous than ever. Two Dracon Beam weapons for range and the claw arm for close combat.

The greatest tool would be the whips to counter Andalite tail blades. Deflecting strikes or ensnaring them. If sharp like piano wire, they could even tear them off.

The sensors could also counter the Chee disguises. Something I don’t think they ever figured out in the books.

Lastly, it adds a parellel to the eventual meeting of the Yeerks and the Iskoort: one choose technology and the other bioengineering.

The Tragedy of Tobias

So Tobias is my favorite character (and I realized a few years back my first crush back before I could understand what such feeling where)

I started re-reading the books recently, and I can't get over this thought... Tobias chose to get "trapped"

He keeps commenting early on how wonderful it is being a Hawk, and while he may not have set out to get stuck underground, I feel there was a big part of him that wanted to be a Hawk and not a person.

Part of me has to wonder if that also sort of saved his life, not from the yeerks but... if he never got to choose to live his life as something other then a human kid would he have made it to adulthood.

Fan Works I have been prompted, I shall now weave all prompts given to me in a singular, multipart narrative!

For clarification, I am going to combine all of the prompts into one AU fic. It may take me some time to write it, but here are all of the ideas listed.

  • Melissa happens upon David in the construction site when he finds the Blue Cube. David gives it to Melissa in exchance for her phone number. u/AlternativeMassive57

  • "Write the story of the Kelbrids and why they are so suspicious of the Andalites." u/oremfrien

  • "Marco, in principal Chapman's office, where he has to explain why he was using the schools computers to search "which animals have the best orgasms", in a way that will both draw attention away from the fact that he's Animorph and at the same time not get him in trouble as a student." u/BarrySquared

  • "Jordan thinks that her sister is sneaking a boy into her room sometimes. Or maybe that Cassie and Rachel might secretly be girlfriends (aren’t they a little old for sleepovers?). So she hides in Rachel’s closet one night to spy on the two…" also by u/AlternativeMassive57

  • "Jake grows a stupid mustache and the other Animorphs try to corner him and shave it off." u/Huggable_Hork-Bajir

  • "The Animorphs retain the ability to morph dinosaurs after fixing the Sario Rip." u/Bamurien

  • "Please write the story of Garoff and how he became the Yeerk Emperor." The second entry by u/oremfrien

  • Aldrea runs just a little bit faster, and stops her father from sending his report. Seerow, “the one good Andalite”, is now potentially in a position to influence the Yeerk Empire in its infancy.

  • The Andalites decide not to waylay a certain Skrit Na ship. Loren and Chapman still manage to take it over, and go on a weird space adventure.

  • Visser Three was actually serious when he suggested that he and Visser One join forces and create their own Yeerk Empire with Earth as the home base. And Visser One takes him up on the offer on the condition of protecting Darwin and Madra.

Now a triple whammy by u/AlternativeMassive57

  • Early series, before Book #20. Tom and Tom's Yeerk, looking in on thirteen year old Jake asleep in his room, and debating whether or not he is aware of the Yeerk invasion or whether he would have any value to the Yeerks as a host. u/DipperJC

Now I will write down all of these on FF.Net and link the story to you once it's done.

YOU'RE IN FOR A SCAAAAAAARE!

I know it's not canon characters, but given how much dang effort I put into this fake book cover, I figured I at least deserved a post here since it IS still Animorphs related.

This was originally supposed to be a badge for Jam, which is why it's not a random Andalite.

Wait... if Morg is the parrot, who's the poor bastard in the jar??

I forget the name of the book I'm looking for.

It's the one where the Yeerks invent anti-morph technology and if I recall correctly poor Tobias ends up getting tortured. It's one of the few books Tobias narrates. Does anybody know which book it is?

Discussion Where's the matter?

I know excess mass go to z-space but I never thought to wonder where extra mass is gained from when morphing. You can't just create matter or energy, you have to transform it yes? That's the first law of thermodynamics that govern our known universe.

So.....where does it come from?

Discussion Let's be real, I think most of us would wind up Nothlits if we could morph

Think about it, two hours is NOTHING.

I can open a book and wind up losing two hours, or blink asleep into a nap that lasts that long, so what's going to happen when you morph into a lazy animal like a dog or a house cat that sleeps all day? Most people's first morphs would probably be their pets or from an easily accessible place like a farm, classroom, petting zoo, maybe you volunteer at say a marine mammal rescue center, who knows... but it's probably gonna be something soft, floppy, and generally content.

The Animorphs themselves, they're fighting a life or death war and closely support each other with motivation and carefully checking each other's morph times and to bring each other back if they get lost in the sauce of animal instincts. If you turn yourself into your big lazy dog and find that perfect warm sunbeam in your living room on the carpet or a pigeon at the park where all that seed is getting thrown in the soft safe grass, just for FUN, yeah, chances are high you're gonna get distracted and get stuck.

Do you think you'd be able to keep hold of yourself and not get trapped if you were morphing on your own time?

I sincerely doubt myself. And for the record, I am definitely NOT writing this by pressing my forever stuck seal nose onto the screen of an unlocked cell phone stolen from a sunbathing tourist because I can't leave the beach anymore. Or anything like that.

Had you written the series, what is one cryptozoological creature you would have included?

So in this series Area 51 definitely has alien technology, Atlantis is confirmed, aliens had some hand in the pyramids, etc. Let's say you are a ghost writer with plenty of leeway for a filler book, are you including Nessie, Bigfoot, Yetis, some other creature?

I personally always wanted Nessie to be confirmed to be real in the series. I could easily see Bigfoot being sighted in the mountains, or a colony of yetis in The Extreme to fight the Venbur. Now how Nessie could be tied into the series I don't know, but it could be fun.
