Technique Discussion Safest way to clean PVD wheels

Post image

I want to clean these up and throw them on my truck. I think they are PVD. I've seen a few products but I don't want to screw them up. I know their nothing special but they'll greatly upgrade what I have now.

I've said this in several similar threads. Muraitic acid. Will clear them right up easily

How safe is it on PVD? I have these wheels on my truck, and they've developed some dark spots that I can't get off. But I've been told not to use acids on them.

I mean as long as it's legit I'll try it. Like drain opener? And rub it down?

You can get it at any hardware store or home Depot. Spray it on. Let it sit for 15 secs and hit it lightly with a brush. Will come right off. Wear hand and face protection because it's caustic but will 100% do the job

Re-read the post. I didn't know about PVD but I've used it on regular aluminum rims. Someone will have to comment on PVD specifically

Damn that's clean...clean. That would work perfect on my old rims.

I’d start with warm water and a Ph neutral soap. If they’re still dirty, try an APC then onto a mild wheel cleaner like Brake buster or diluted Adam’s

Thanks ill try the soap first and see how it turns out.

Wanna preface this by saying that I don’t know how safe it is to use on PVD wheels in particular…

You can use Dawn on wheels this dirty. You need a degreaser at the very least, which Dawn is, though it’s not automotive-focused like something akin to P&S Brake Buster. Iron remover (can find a million different brands of it) may also be necessary. If you wanted one product for it all, Griot’s Heavy Duty Wheel Cleaner has iron remover built into it and can be used to clean these if you’ve already tried a pressure washer and agitation from car wash soap.

I like the idea of iron remover. That seems to make sense for those dark spots on the inside of the rim. I'll order some up now

Acid Cleaner will kick ass here

You douse them in wheel acid and rinse. Done in literally 1 minute.

I'll search for it. I watched the one Ford has one up too and it's kind of a joke to watch lol.
