You say this, but you're probably visible on HD camera for a majority of the time you're in public. There is a camera recording pretty much every intersection in most big cities, like 50% of people have a doorbell cam, dash cams, etc.
That's not even getting into 3rd party data companies that have cams setup all over to log license plates. I guarantee some random company knows your frequent trips, when you make them, and has footage of you in key spots and they then sell that data for advertisers.
And that's not even getting into the fact that if you have your phone on you at all, your activity is known.
If you commit a crime, I guarantee there is footage of you either committing it, or at least that places you in the area at the time. The problem is finding and accessing the footage.
I think that's more to do with protecting the potential judicial case so that they have the highest chance of conviction. Not every case is black and white and everyone is innocent until proven guilty. Have to protect the legal case from any prejudicial arguments and showing any evidence could really damage the prosecution.
I get the why's and know it works differently country per country, SKorea is the strongger protector of ID of offernders I know. In my country they have none, face to the camera. My country is a mess though. I'm only saying, as a regular working guy not robbing stores, wanna see their face on the clip from the store. If was my neighbors, mf ain't getting sugar from me
Because a lot of CCTV cameras are either old or dialled in incorrectly with gain trying to compensate for lenses too small for their resolution and exposure settings meaning everything, particularly at night, turns into a blurry mush.
I know that’s a trope, but it’s way more common now to have crystal clear footage from people’s cars/doorsteps or cameras in businesses or at street corners.

And we can’t get a decent picture of any high street store robbery. Or any getaway car from numerous hit and runs.
