RESOURCES FOR THOSE STRUGGLING MENTALLY/EMOTIONALLY

Below are some resources I personally have used or have been shared with me. No one should have to go through a hard time alone. Note these resources are NOT just for those struggling with suicidal thoughts. If you are in emotional distress or any mental crisis, use these resources! Don’t wait till it’s too late to help yourself. Use and share these resources for whoever needs them.

GENERAL RESOURCES
General Website for Help Lines (trauma, emotional distress, domestic violence, SA/SH, SI, etc) (Call/Text): https://findahelpline.com

Worried about yourself or someone else? Check out the JED foundation: https://jedfoundation.org/mental-health-resource-center/

List of general resources for LGBTQ youth (greater Boston): https://www.bagly.org/resources

body-based coping skills and other exercises: resources for resilience

coping skills 4 students!

——

CRISIS LINES (confidential)

NATIONAL SUICIDE PREVENTION HOTLINE (call/text): 988 or 1-800-273-8255 [anonymous with licensed counselors]

text HOME to 741741 to connect with a crisis counselor

For LGBTQ+ identifying students, the Trevor Project Hotline is START to 678678

BU Crisis Line: 617-353-3575 Call the number and stay on the line (it will prompt you) to be connected to a licensed crisis counselor. I personally have used this multiple times and have found it helpful for short term distress management.

(i understand some ppl have issues w text lines- it can be a little frustrating at times but it can be cathartic to vent to a stranger!)

——

FOCUS/SUPPORT GROUPS

BU Behavioral Medicine has specific weekly focus groupsdealing with trauma, depression, anxiety, Black support groups, Asian support groups, different cultural groups and even just mindfulness groups (yoga, meditation, organization and study skills, etc)

the Justice Resource Initiative(JRI) provides tons of amazing culturally-sensitive and individualized mental health services all over Massachusetts (Trauma-Informed Individuals, Group and Family therapy, School-based services, Yoga and Expressive Art therapies, etc etc). Located in Boston/Brookline and relatively inexpensive

——

the world is a tough place but you are never alone! i’ve been there and so have many other people. pls reach out if ur struggling. if someone doesn’t provide u the care u need, DONT GIVE UP! there will always be somebody (crisis counselors, friends, family, n random ppl like myself) willing to listen.

EDIT: note these are resources for distress management and are meant to supplement, NOT REPLACE, traditional forms of treatment

Admissions MS in Mechanical: Upenn vs BU

Hi Guys, Actually i got acceptance into both Upenn and BU for this fall 2025 in their MS program. Right now, I am not able to decide which one should i go for? Few things about me; I'm an international student, from a low income background. My interest is more towards fluids/thermo and aerospace side. P

Would request your views to decide which could be better option considering all parameters including study-wise and living costs etc.

Thanks!

Which of Boston University's online masters in cybersecurity are best? Seems to be a few options

For each of them,

  1. How much did it help for studying for the Security+ 701 exam/how much overlap?
  2. What about for CISSP?
  3. What are some specific example careers/companies that the degree seems to lead to in Massachusetts that doesn't require top secret clearance?

URGENT- do CAS students get credit from Wheelock classes

Title.

Wanted to enroll in a WEDDE class but then saw a post about how CAS students may not get credit from the other colleges. (e.g. MET)

Is this the case for Wheelock as well? Is there a credit transfer rate of any kind?

FY103: Pre-Health Seminar

Has anyone taken this class? Is it worth the time or is it a waste? I heard that it was kind of a waste of time, but I feel like it could be helpful especially if you're applying to MMEDIC. Thanks!

Hey, quick note: Please don’t approach people while they’re eating — it’s really not the right time. If you’re campaigning, wait outside the dining hall. I went to dinner and got approached by five different people asking for votes. It got to the point where I had to be pretty blunt to get some space. Just be respectful of people’s downtime.

Transferring out of BU CGS for STEM

I've been admitted to BU CGS, although my intended track is pre-med. I hope to transfer to another university (not within BU); how possible is this, considering I'll only have one semester or less of grades, and not many are towards my major?

Good Courses to Improve Writing

Hello,

I am a rising junior, and I was wondering if there are any courses I can take at BU that would improve my overall writing skills. I'm not the worst writer (I manage), but I feel as if I continuously fall within the A- to low A range. Any recommendations? Thanks!

Non degree classes while doing masters

Hey a bit of a weird question.

Is it allowed to take non degree classes while currently enrolled in BU MET masters ?

Reason being is lets say you have a course that it's difficult and you want to just try it out first, you take it as non degree. And if you get a good grade then you transfer the credits of that course to your masters. If you don't score well, at least you went through it and now when you take it under you masters, it will be much easier.

Mental health

I recently have been slacking off on school work because I have been going through a rough breakup. I spent most days in bed or crying for almost three weeks now but I am finally starting to feel better. I missed some assignments and quizzes in some classes and I hope to make it up. How do I go about emailing professors and will I need an official doctors note? Yes I realize everyone has gone through a breakup before and I should just get over it but this is my first time going through this and we were together 3+ years so please cut me some slack.
