Before posting a medical question!

Please get in contact with your local vet first!

Your vet is a trained medical professional, Reddit is not! Your vet knows more about your pet than we do! A good rule of thumb is: if it was happening to you, would you go see a doctor? If the answer is yes, then seek out a vet.

Feel free to make a post, but if you haven’t contacted a vet, there’s not much anyone here can do to help you.

Can’t afford a vet? Consider payment plans, credit lines, or contacting your local shelters and rescues. Please do not post fundraisers (gofundme, etc) in the post or comments, read the rule in the sidebar for more details.

Please thoroughly read the stickied comment on your post.

Did my cat rip it all out??

He’s having a hell of a 3 month period. Horners syndrome, chapped lips and now he ripped his entire toe out?? Took him to the vet already and they aren’t to terribly concerned, however, I can’t even tell what’s going on. His little toe pad is like 10 times the size 😭

Thoughts?!?

My cat is suddenly not looking too good

My cat Lucy is 12 years old and around an hour or two ago she’s been looking dejected and unwell. Since she’s getting older her appetite has decreased and she’s lost a concerning amount of weight but she’s been staying active and running around. I’m worried because we gave her a can of wet food (Royal Canin hair and skin) but she barely touched it and threw up a white foamy substance. We called a 24 hour vet but we still won’t be able to take her until the morning :( I’m praying that this will pass and the vet will be able to help her but because she’s getting old and losing weight it’s concerning us even more 😞😞

I think my cat has some neurological problems.

My cat has always been very weird. She was born in my house about 7 years ago. I’m going to list off a few things about her that makes me believe she has some sort of neurological issue: 1. Despite all our cats being an outdoor cat, she has never wanted to leave the house, save for the immediate backyard to go to the toilet. 2. She has immense anxiety, we moved the furniture once and she got so stressed out she started peeing blood. The vet said cats suffer from this when they’re very stressed. 3. She begs for food constantly, even if you’ve just fed her literally 30 seconds ago. Whenever someone goes into the kitchen she runs into there too no matter what. We check for worms regularly, the vet gives us dewormer and she’s always free of them. She will also eat until she throws up and later eat the throw up if we don’t spot it straight away (because it’s behind a bookcase or something). 4. She over grooms no matter what, to the point where the fur on her back is sparse. Vet hasn’t helped with this. 5. She is not interested in other cats or humans, she won’t ever play, she won’t show much affection, she will sit near us when we are gathered but I think she only does this because she’s waiting for us to go into the kitchen. 6. She hates the rain or bad weather and will just go to toilet on the floor if she doesn’t want to go outside.

For context her sister from the same litter behaves like a totally normal cat.

I am leaning towards her suffering from high anxiety, my vet is kinda bad and doesn’t care as long as she isn’t physically unwell.

Cat stopped eating wet food after our older cat passed.

Post image

It’s been about two days since the loss of our older cat (brown stripped). She was about 12.5 years old and had a tumor in her chest. Our younger cat (white and black) is 2 years old and they’ve lived together for about a year and a half. My boyfriend was home with her while she started having trouble breathing. She started stumbling around our apartment while choking and struggling and our younger cat was following her curious about what was going on. My boyfriend rushed her to the hospital but she sadly passed on the way there.

Our younger cat is usually an amazing eater. She will lick her bowl clean and then would try to steal our older cats food as she ate slower. Ever since our older cat passed, our younger cat is having a hard time eating. She will eat a bit of dry food here and there but will not touch her wet food which is extremely unusual for her. She will still get very excited and purr loudly for treats and will eat the treats. She has the same reaction when we are preparing her wet food but doesn’t end up eating it.

We’ve tried sitting with her while she eats and putting some treats in her wet food but she will just eat the treats and leave everything else. Is this just grief? Has this happened to anyone else? How long did it take for your baby to eat again? We have noticed she has been a bit more clingy and cuddly since her passing. Any advice to help her feel better?

Stray cat eats litter from litter box (pica?)

Post image
Upvotes

I adopted a stray cat that started showing up to my apartment 2mo ago. He snuked into my appt and rob me some bead loaf. After that, he started showing up every day so I bought a bowl and started feeding him some cat food, until he was confident enough to let me pet him. Then he started entering inside by himself and laying down in my couch always leaving my window open in case he wanted to leave to roam around, poo or pee. These months he started to spend more and more time inside and les and less outside.

3 weeks ago we did the first visit to the vet for a general check up and they also applied an antiparasitic and antiflea. The check up went well. He is approximately 2-3yo, male, not castrated and weights 4ks. The experience was quite scaring for him and stayed petrified and submissive all visit, but as soon as he was home he went back to normal. I also bought a litter box and some rocks-like litter.

Last Thursday we did our second visit for his first vaccine (flu). Also pretty terrified and scaring for him, and this time had a harder time around puting him inside the cage. Back home he went back to normal and, at night, left to roam around as usual. The next day he showed up home later than usual - at noon where he usually would show up at breakfast - which was pretty strange.

After that he started to feel badly. He spent all day laying at the couch, but not in a relaxed position, his appetite was not normal and didn't moew at all (he is quite talkative). It was then when I also found him twice eating and chewing his litter rocks. I immediatly set it appart and bought him some other type of non-clumping litter, which also started to lick and eat.

The next night he had gotten worse. He still layed all time, he wasn't responsive at all except for his onstant wag of his tail, he couldn't even open his eyes for himself and had a terrible sad face. I took him to emergency vet where they didn't find anything more than a small fever. They only gave him something for the pain and to lift him up. The vet did not know why he was eating litter either. He was also terrified by this experience to the point that he wet himself.

The next day he had gotten better but still not healthy at all. He moves more, eats and drinks more (although not same appetite as before). I tried the litter box again to see if he went there, and still insisted on eating the litter so again I hid it from him. I opened the window so that he went outside and he was very reluctunct to jumping (which might indicate some muscular pain) so I helped him get accross to the garden. There he walked normally, even though quite lethargic, and pooped normally with the right consistency (he seems to be accostomed to dirt instead of litter). I didn't see him pee and because he does not go in the litter box I cannot confirm if he did indeed peed since he wet himself at the emergency vet (24hs ago).

I have a vet appointment this next Thuersday.

Long story short: - He did not vomit at anytime - He remains very stiff and lethargic at the moment - He poops ok - Walks alright although reluctuct to jumping - He eats and drinks (although with less appetite) - Not seen him pee although found places inside my home with pee smell - Does not meow at all when usually he is very talkative - He lays in a very stiff and not relaxed way (see image)

  • Can this pica syndrome appear because of stress or pain?
  • Should I replace the litter with dirt? Or a mix of both?

Is my cat breathing weird or am I just overly paranoid

Rini is about 12 years old, and she's been to the vet due to weight loss (6.5 from about 9 last June) and has been getting mainly wet food since. I've noticed her breathing and I can't tell if it's weird or not, she's also had a cough (?) fit for a minute at most before. I'm just worried about her, I can't have anything happen to her right now

Can absence seizures be triggered by standing up?

Enable HLS to view with audio, or disable this notification

Obviously it'd be more helpful if I could include multiple videos, but whatever. I think this one is a good example, this happened about 24 hours ago. This behaviour started about a week ago and has happened probably upwards of ten times. After laying down for a while, maybe 30 minutes or more, she'll stand up, take a few steps, and start having what I believe is a seizure. She stares into space, starts losing her balance, and I think she can still move but it looks like it's difficult or confusing. She stays there for a few seconds like her muscles are so constricted that she can't move, and then she's fine.

We went to see the emergency vet today and basically said that all her vitals are normal and that we'd have to see a specialist to learn more.

Here is a pasted version of her discharge document:

Tiny was presented to the Emergency Department at WVRC-Waukesha on 04-05-2025 for evaluation of recent onset of abnormal behavior including wobbliness, seeming unsteady, and starting off into space. We discussed possible causes for this including potential seizure episodes. Potential causes for these episodes include a vascular event, stroke event, brain tumor, infectious disease, or an auto-immune inflammatory disorder. Other possible causes include a vestibular/balance disorder from inner ear disease due to ear infection, a mass, or polyp vs idiopathic (unknown cause).

So, here are my questions:

Is an absence seizure like this painful? It is something she can live with, or will it get worse? She's about twelve years old. And, it appears that her 'trigger' is standing up after sitting for a long time... is this a real trigger for seizures?

I guess we're just waiting to see if it keeps happening without knowing the cause. We can definitely deal with a disabled cat -- we sort of already have one, and we're fine financially -- I just want to make sure I'm not putting her in further danger by continuing to live like this.

I think she's already adapting. The first time it happened she just stood up and fell over, but her most recent attack she realized it was coming and crouched low to the ground to prevent herself from falling over.

IDK. It's just scary. Any advice or intuition is greaty appreciated. Tiny cat is like a sibling to me.

My poor girl suddenly lost a chunk of hair on her eyelid

She's an indoor car that has lost a giant chunk of hair on her eye lid. Her behavior is fine, she's eating, drinking and pooping normally. The skin does not look irritated or anything and I can touch it without her reacting in pain or anything (keep in mind she's very tolerant). My husband is not concerned at all but I grew up with a lot of cats and I have never seen this before. Please help :c

Cat wails if we aren’t in the bedroom

Post image
5 Upvotes

Just what the title says. My wife and I adopted Bufo (pictured above during what we call “supervised string time”) at the end of January. We have two other cats, and they all get along decently well. The only thing that’s really difficult to deal with about him is the screaming. If we are home, but in any other room aside from our bedroom, he is screaming nearly nonstop. The only thing that stops it is one of us going to the bedroom. We went to the vet yesterday, and they gave us gabapentin. They also said that they had never heard of something like this before. The gabapentin didn’t do much for long yesterday. He is a talkative cat a lot of the time, but the screaming is different from that. It’s those loud, sad wails. We live in an apartment, and I’m worried that people will complain about it. Also, we’re going on a trip next month and I’m worried about leaving him alone for that long. We have a camera in the house, and as far as we can tell he’s fine during the day when we’re both at work. Anyone have any ideas?

Cat Howling for Food

Hi y’all. My wife and I have two cats, our first one we adopted is Moose. He’s around seven years old now, and is overall one of the greatest and sweetest cats. Within the last few months though, every morning, he has started to constantly meow and howl around 5am or so. We have always fed our cats at 6am and 6pm. Nothing has changed with their food or their feeding schedule within at least the last year.

He started this habit before daylight savings and we were hopeful that setting our clocks forward would help with this issue. It has not. At some point between 5am and 5:30am, he’ll get up, start pacing around our apartment, and meow constantly. He will also scratch the carpet of our bedroom and furniture. I can only assume he does this to try and get our attention, as once we feed him at 6am, he’s all good! He also doesn’t do this in the evening. We’ve tried over the last few weeks ignoring him and setting an alarm to go off at 6am to try and Pavlov him….but it’s not really working.

Any advice? He’s a great and sweet cat otherwise! Thanks!

Callie is peeing all over

Post image
8 Upvotes

Our little Callie has been peeing on anything soft she can find for almost a month now. She pees in small quantities in her litter box but sometimes decides she’d rather pee on a bag or clothing or our bed.

We have taken her twice to the vet. First visit (2 weeks ago) they took two X-rays and there was nothing. They told us to get some pro biotics and wait. Today we went to a different vet as her behaviour hadn’t changed. They did a blood test and ultrasound and told us she was perfectly healthy and this must be a mental issue.

Callie was abused as a baby when she was a stray. We’ve had her for 7 years now and this never happened before.

We’ve added a second litter box and are going to seperate our cats food and water dishes. Our other cat gets jealous of her and sometimes hisses at her so we fear this may be the cause. However this isn’t new, they’ve lived together for Callie’s whole life.

Any suggestions?

Any help with finding out what is wrong with my cat?

Hi /CATHELP,

I'm asking for your help with my cat Lucy. She's almost 6 years old and has been having intense "itch attacks" for over two years now — short episodes lasting about 5 to 15 minutes during which she compulsively and frantically licks herself. You can see this behavior in the video. Most of the time she's lying down during an attack, but sometimes the itching gets so intense that she actually jumps up and runs away from it — as if she's trying to escape the sensation.

It's clearly bothering her, and I just can't bear to watch it anymore. On top of that, it's affecting my sleep since it also happens at night.

Background: About six months after I got her, we started noticing these symptoms. Of course, I took Lucy to the vet, but we quickly found out that Lucy is completely unmanageable at the vet. Taking blood was impossible, and even a basic examination was barely doable. So we decided to start treating based on her symptoms.

At first, we tried various types of flea and mite treatments. Results were unclear — the symptoms seemed to lessen at times but would come back again. When we treated her again, it seemed like the treatments weren't working anymore, and the symptoms just persisted.

Despite all the itching and licking, Lucy doesn’t have any bald spots, wounds, or obvious skin issues. Her coat looks normal, which only adds to the mystery.

The itching seems to affect her whole body — there’s no specific area. But she tends to focus most of her licking on her paws and the back half of her body (legs, tail area, lower back).

The problems kept recurring. After sending more concerning videos like the one above to our vet, she suspected it might be some kind of skin allergy. So, we started a special elimination diet for two months to see if the symptoms were food-related. During those months, Lucy also received prednisone to suppress the symptoms, which seemed to help (especially at higher doses — the symptoms were noticeably milder), but the problem never fully went away.

After the diet attempt failed, we decided at the beginning of this year to do an extensive blood test under anesthesia. The results showed that she’s otherwise healthy, and nothing strange came up.

Now: This week, we’ve started her on an oral medication called Sporimune, which will hopefully be more effective and less harmful in the long run than prednisone. The problem is that it's practically impossible to administer to Lucy because it tastes awful. She’s a sweet cat, but when I try to get this stuff in her mouth, she turns into Lucifer. I end up wrestling with her for half an hour just to get it in, and even then she manages to spit half of it back out.

I love this cat to death, but I honestly don’t know what to do anymore. I’m sleep-deprived and have already spent a ton of money on tests and medication, yet we still have no clear answers — other than ruling a few things out.

Does anyone have an idea what might be going on with Lucy or what could be causing these symptoms? And do you have any tips on how to give wet medication to a demon cat like Lucy? Any advice is welcome!

URGENT

Upvotes

My 2 year old cat is very apathic with very low energy. - Her third eyelid is visible, - she doesn't have energy to move a lot, just lays in bed, - she doesn't have energy to hold her head, just lays there and breathes, - is barely responsive to her name.

She ate a little, her gums are normal color, no signs of dehydration, paws are normal temperature, purrs when petted.

Vet is closed today, I have to wait till tomorrow, I'm worried so much, what should I do?

Weird Rash on Cat?

Thumbnail gallery
3 Upvotes

Hi, my cat has a strange scab on his neck, when I pet him, I noticed weird bumps on his neck. When I investigate them tiny tufts of hair come up with the scab. They are only situated around his neck, not anywhere else on his body. He is an indoor only cat, but a week ago he went outside for a minute or two while my bf got the instacart delivery and he didn't leave our porch (only being super nosey, he never does this so IDK why he did this time). There is an outdoor cat in my neighborhood who looks a little mangey and likes to hang out on our porch (I think he can smell that Simba lives here or something). I am worried that Simba may have picked something up from that cat or something. The only other change is that and I put a new collar on Simba from petsmart about a month ago because we were testing out a RFID feeder and he needed the collar for the tag device. The collar was breakaway and wasn't tight, I could fit two fingers easily in the space between his neck and collar. He could be allergic to the collar because he would scratch at it. We took the collar off after noticing the patches.

We can't get a vet appointment until Tuesday, but we will take him then for sure. I am just worried in those 2 days for his skin. Has anyone experienced something like this? Should we give him a bath to wash off something that might be irritating?

How to keep my cat from eating my dogs food

Upvotes

My dog is a free feeder. My cat has an insatiable hunger. I don’t want to take my dog down to one meal a day just because she’s a slow breakfast eater and the cat is a monster. I don’t know how to keep the cat away from it. I’m also in an apartment so I don’t have a lot of space to manage, their bowls are already across the house from each other
