if it was truly global. then we can all move on without the USA together. It isn't targeted hate. It's just business....

u/averysmallbeing 19d ago

It's definitely hate at this point tbh.

Ya we know. Hence the boycott continues.

Agreed. One does not simply threaten the sovereignty of an ally nation and expect there to be no consequence

It is wild that the USA doesn’t understand that if they tariff the world, it just makes other countries trade more with each other, bypassing America.

Americans also don't understand how voting for someone who has bankrupted 5 businesses isn't good for the economy.....but here we are.

Truth is, that's kinda what'll happen. We don't need to do it out of spite or anything, he's isolating himself from a world that will continue to trade freely with each other.

Yeah, things will suck for a bit, but the difference is we'll continue forging new trade relations and improving our situation, while Trump makes declarations with his fingers in his ears and the country continues to deteriorate

I don’t buy Doug’s statement that we need to be first in line for exemptions. Stop leaning into Trump’s game and do what carney is doing right now: seeking other partners to diversity our trading relationships. It’s probably because southern Ontario is so heavily invested in industrial USA but it’s time to rip off the band aid and make some changes.

We need to do both

Diversify while at the same time seek every exemption possible. To not do so is foolish

Agreed.

I honestly don’t mind if different leaders work on different angles. So long as there is a united Canada front (cough Danielle Smith and Scott Moe cough), let them work.

Honestly the only reason I wouldn’t pursue and exemption possible is simply because Trump will never be a man of his word. Hell, he’s not even a man of his signature - the man would sign a pledge to impose zero tariffs on us then change his mind the next day and say “fucking stop me”.

It’s fair enough to seek every relief possible, but it’s also smart to pursue the alternatives and get us out from under Trump’s heel.

You have to give these premiers and prime ministers some latitude. The consequences of these tariffs are going to be devastating. The general public is doing a great job pulling together and getting the elbows up and that is very important. But these premiers have to deal with the reality of $ and cents. Even if it is just to buy us time to open new markets.

Yes I am absolutely in line that we have to stand with our premiers and prime minister. This is a unity moment. We can disagree on method a bit but they don’t have the easy job.

A lot of Ontario’s remaining industrial base is in automotive parts and assembly. You can’t decouple that from the US as shipping car parts over the ocean is too inefficient.

Agreed. Your have to convert the workforce into a different kind of industrial production and that’s not a small job.

Why not make Canada the defence manufacturing hub of the new NATO? Most of the raw materials are here, so we should incentivize EU and UK defence companies to establish production facilities here. Make Canada vital to the defence of Europe and we can ensure they'll consider it vital to defend us.

1

u/Harbinger2001 19d ago

Germany can already fill that role with raw materials coming from Scandinavia.

If we get exemptions and everyone else gets tariffs, then Doug’s “Fortress Am-Can” plan is back on track.

There will be no give from the Trump admin without substantial take. I do not believe at all that Fortress North America will be a pathway to sovereignty.

How to destroy your economy and power in 2 steps!

Step 1. Impose tariffs for no jus4ifiable reason. Step 2. Create a depression dunno loss of jobs, exports, and imports.

3

u/WislaHD Ontario 19d ago

The textbooks usually cite Argentina as a quick-way to destroy an economy citing the two above steps. Funny that.

I thought Venezuela should replace Argentina because they followed the two steps above and did it even quicker!

Well, now we have Trump.

Step 3. Financial implosion triggers civil unrest

Step 4. Martial law

No more pesky elections 😊

It seems as if the tariff news has really slowed down this past week since Carney took over. Is that just me or anyone else notice that too. Or maybe the focus is always on the news cycle?

2

u/frumfrumfroo 19d ago

There hasn't been any new ones and there haven't been any new talks. It was relentless before because Trump kept changing his mind and/or threatening everyone every five seconds.

1

u/rusty_mcdonald 19d ago

This is all about funding tax cuts. Damage has been done. It’s time to slowly ween our selves off this shit storm.

Targeted tariffs have a role in certain circumstances (like when other countries are legitimately guilty of dumping practices).

A global tariff simultaneously placed on every country at the same time is legitimately one of the stupidest fucking economic ideas ever formed and expressed. This is going to hit the average American like a hammer to the face. And they'll deserve it.

2

u/calbff 19d ago

It's a plan that my 10 year old might have come up with, but he likely would have seen the potential problems with it. Literally "one of stupidest fucking economic ideas ever formed and expressed". Perfectly said.

You sound like a person who made it to at least week 3 of Econ 101.

Its a shame Donald and his cult aren't aware of the over 200 years of theory and evidence we have about tariffs. You'd think at least one of them took an econ class.
