Monthly FAQs ❗️ READ ME BEFORE POSTING! Monthly FAQ Thread: Fixes for Common Issues, Troubleshooting Guides, and Tips for Beginners
👋 Hello, welcome to /r/CitiesSkylines
Our little community has grown to over half a million subscribers, so as you can imagine things get a little busy in here. The purpose of this thread is to provide new members a jumping-off point to find the information that they need to get started, whether they're a seasoned player of the game or a brand new mayor.
We get a lot of posts which ask very similar questions, so we've pulled together this post to help address our most Frequently Asked Questions, and give you a place to ask simple questions which only need a quick answer, not warranting a dedicated thread.
Before you post, please consider if one of our sister-subreddits would be more appropriate:
/r/ShittySkylines - memes, reaction images, tenuous and obscure references, real-life photos that remind you of the game, and gags based on in-game activities like "a dead person is waiting for transport at shop-til-you-drop" all go here
/r/CitiesSkylinesModding - if you have a request for a mod, want to commission an asset, or need help with your own mod/asset/map creation it should be posted here
If you still think that /r/CitiesSkylines is the right subreddit, please first check the FAQ below.
Please be aware that if you create a new thread which is addressed by the answers or links in this thread, it will likely be removed with a message directing you back here. This is not done to stifle conversation, but rather to help keep the subreddit tidy and provide as much space as possible for mayors to share their creations and inspire others.
If your question is genuinely a simple one, like "how do I do X", please use this thread rather than creating a new post.
Finally, if your question isn't already answered below - please use Reddit's search function to try and find if your query has been asked and answered in the past. If not? Feel free to create a fresh discussion thread.
The format of this update thread has been simplified with core information rehosted on our subreddit wiki. This enables us to update the content more quickly and reliably, and to reduce the visual impact of a 2000+ word thread.

Discussion ❓ "Is Cities: Skylines II Worth It?" megathread
"Is Cities: Skylines II Worth It?" 🤔
... is one of the most common questions we see on the subreddit at the moment, leading to dozens of duplicate posts asking essentially the same thing: Should I buy the game or not?
It is our intent that this megathread will help collect information to help you make your decision, and provide a place to ask for more subjective opinions from community members.

Patches and Bug Fixes
As of the start of this month, there have been 20 patches for the game. You can review the change log for each patch on the Paradox Wiki:
What have the devs been saying?
The main channel for "formal" communication from the developers comes via the Official Information & Announcements section on the Paradox Forums. We maintain an accompanying megathread for each post which captures a lot of player feedback and reactions to the news shared each week.
The best way to catch up on past posts is to browse the Dev Diary and/or Announcement flairs and dip into the more recent ones. Unfortunately, these links may not work on Reddit's mobile apps (please tell Reddit if you'd like this fixed) but in the meantime you can go to the main page of the subreddit and use the "filter by flair" options provided.
Live Gameplay Videos
If you're interested in seeing how the game is playing today, you can check out recent videos or streams from YouTube and Twitch. These will show you the "real" game, not marketing videos. As there is only limited mod support for the game at this stage, what you see will broadly be vanilla gameplay and will help you understand how the game is performing at the moment.

Reviews
Many critic reviews aren't necessarily reflective of the current state of the game. That said, reviews are helpful sources of information to help you decide whether or not to drop your cash on any new game, not just Cities: Skylines II.

Try Before you Buy
If you're still unsure, Cities: Skylines II is available on Microsoft Game Pass for PC, which is a subscription service at a much lower monthly cost than the full retail price of the game. Microsoft is currently offering an initial 14-day trial for as low as £1/$1/1€ (which renews at full price after the 14 days).
- US$1 Game Pass Trial
- £1 Game Pass Trial
- 1€ Game Pass Trial (this link goes to the Xbox Ireland store, check the local Xbox site for your country before proceding)
Refunds
If for any reason you can't make use of a discounted Game Pass for PC subscription (i.e. it may not be available in your region), you have the option of purchasing the game and refunding it within the store's refund window.
- Steam: Request a refund within 14 days of purchase, as long as you haven't accrued more than 2 hours of total playtime
- Microsoft Store: Request a refund within 14 days of purchase, as long as you haven't accrued "a significant amount of play time"
Recognising that you may not be able to reach the "late game" within 2 hours, you can use this 100k benchmarking city to establish whether or not you're comfortable with the performance on your system.

Sharing a City E4 Expressway Showcase Part 1
The E4-Tohoku Expressway is part of Nishimachi’s expressway network, running along the city’s outskirts and forming an outer ring road with the E6 Expressway. It begins at the Misaki-Asahina Interchange, connecting with the E6, E2, E8, E7, and E1 expressways before ending at the Takasaki Junction, where it intersects with the E8 again. This route offers a quicker way to navigate around the city without going through the center.

Help & Support (PC) Traffic Tips and Tricks??
I’ve been playing this game for like over a year now and while i’ve become better, I can never help but get frustrated with the traffic at 6K+ population. At this point the game feels more of a traffic simulator than a city sim. All those guides and tutorials I’ve seen seeing, somehow get way too complicated too fast and it’s like at some point i’m thinking: yeah i’ve got it now!…but i just end up in the same situation.
I know that There’s an Aterial, Collector and Local road and i also understand some of how they work BUT I just can’t seem to make a proper layout that works and doesn’t bottle up - especially with industry. I really hope someone can help me :(

Sharing a City Anybody else make fake postcards?
This particular city is the most recent iteration of my baby. Same map, same rough layout, for the third time, now incorporating what I've learned (and downloaded) from other cities I've made. I think I've spent a few hundred hours just on all the versions of Amity... and this one is fully plopped! So I had to make a postcard for it.

Discussion Bus route optioneering help
Hello!
I am currently creating a UK-style city without the extensive use of road infrastructure, such as large grade-separated junctions. I want to rely on buses as the main mode of public transport. This is inspired by UK cities such as Bristol, Portsmouth, and Brighton — which are characterised by significant car reliance and limited mass transit infrastructure, thus necessitating a strong emphasis on bus transportation.
I'm looking for some advice on a tricky issue in my city. There's a street called Brighton Road that's been dealing with heavy traffic congestion. It's causing problems for cars, buses, and city services, and local businesses are struggling to get their deliveries because of it. I've come up with a solution, which I’ve outlined below, but I'm not sure if it's the right move!
Context
To provide context on this 'Brighton Road' which is experiencing heavy traffic. Brighton Road is a busy high street with mixed-use commercial properties. It connects several residential streets, including two high-density estates. There are two high-frequency bus services and significant pedestrian movement due to local shopping and visits. A pedestrian-only street links to residential areas at the start of Brighton Road. The street also has a good number of kerbside parking for businesses and customers. In addition, the road is essential for connecting the city to the motorway (Highway).
Challenges
Nevertheless, this street is encountering challenges that are contributing to traffic issues. These challenges include:
- Brighton Road is quickest and shortest from the motorway to the rest of the city. Resulting in high numbers of traffic utilising this route to the motorway
- Broadmead Avenue (to the left of Brighton Road) is a bus priority corridor. No southbound general traffic is permitted. Only northbound traffic is permitted (see the inset diagram below). Therefore, southbound traffic may divert onto Brighton Road as a result of this restriction.
- Kerbside parking is vital to the street, it is preferred to retain the existing parking provision on the street.
- A large number of pedestrians crossing Brighton Road significantly impact traffic, causing frequent stops.
- Bus stops on the street slow down traffic as buses pull in to pick up and drop off passengers. This becomes an issue when two buses arrive simultaneously causing a backlog on the street and restricting all movement.
- Vehicles coming off the side-streets cause stopping for other vehicles travelling on Brighton Road.
- Delivery vans and trucks also cause vehicles to stop as they service buildings on the street.
- (on a game related issue – the insane number of taxis that also spawn and arrive to the city overwhelm all of my street network!)

Solutions
After several optioneering, I have decided on a mitigation scheme that does not rely on a significant build-out of new infrastructure. This instead makes efficient use of existing infrastructure, and improving capacity where required.
1. Converted Brighton Road into a one-way southbound road. This also retains the kerbside parking along the street.
2. Capacity improvements to the highway exit junction by enlarging the roundabout and adding a new highway exit.
3. Inbound traffic to the city is directed via the new junction exit which would avoid using Brighton Road.
4. Bus services on Brighton Road have been diverted to the adjacent residential street (refer to diagram below with red arrows). A pedestrian route has been connected to the new bus stops, ensuring accessibility for residents.
5. Converted the former pedestrian only-street to a bus-only street to allow inbound buses to enter the residential street with the bus stops (see red arrows below).
6. Brighton Road now has only 3 traffic light-controlled pedestrian crossings with long pedestrian-only phases, reducing conflicts between cars and pedestrians.
7. Built pedestrian footbridges to link suburbs isolated by the motorway junction.

Overall, I am happy with how this project turned out and I have seen a noticeable decrease in traffic on Brighton Road. Without demolishing any building or removing parking capacity I have managed to mitigate against the issues outlined above.
I would like to hear any opinions or observations you may have on this solution. What alternative approaches might you have taken, and do you have any additional suggestions for improving this street?
Additionally, I am willing to create more posts in the future about different areas of my city where I describe the issues in detail and set out my solutions. I can also offer advice for others who encounter similar challenges in their cities.
