Since we're on topic, can someone explain the lore. Why is Guy Gardner a Lantern since there's Hal Jordan already. I thought there's just one Lantern per planet. That's the first question

The second question is if the ring chooses its bearer, then how come it chose Guy Gardner? Seeing how everyone calls him a douche

Didn't read the comics, so a bit confused here

I don't remember the lore answer about the multiple lanterns in Earth's sector, but the rings themselves don't necessarily search for nice people. They search for strong wills and the ability to overcome great fear. You can have that and still be a douche.

there's multiple lanterns in Earth's sector because after the brief period where Kyle was the only Green Lantern in the entire universe, Green Lantern Rebirth happened and that made for four human lanterns. They focused on rebuilding and recruiting during then, so a lot of new recruits were introduced and all four were veterans so their help was sorely needed.

Basically, in the process of replacing their numbers after many wars against other corps and Hal killing a lot of them as Parallax, humans were found to be suitable GLs so new rings have now chosen a lot of humans. Before Hal humans were seen as primitive so we weren't the priority when choosing new GLs.

The short answer is that earth experiences an overwhelming amount of cosmic threats. Also humans apparently are kind of naturally geared for lantern Corp because of the overwhelming hubris of not being afraid of anything even though we should be.

Basically, Guy Gardner is a backup candidate, should anything happen to the primary Green Lantern, Hal Jordan.

At the time he first appeared in the comic, Gardner was much different to how he is today - he was a special needs teacher and social worker.
