They’re nearly as intelligent as octopuses. They can recognize individuals, demonstrate future planning and reward processing such as showing begging type behavior for food and then changing colors to show gratitude.

Cuttlefish might end up evolving into the first intelligent lifeform on Earth. They are incredibly impressive, with their main drawback being dying in 6 months or so.

u/this_one_wasnt_taken 8d ago
Honestly doesn't sound so bad. They die before any of them can invent taxes or run for office.
30
u/BlizzPenguin 8d ago
That drawback makes them even more impressive. To be that intelligent and less than a year of development.

I can’t think of the word Cuttlefish without seeing the Humancentipad episode of South Park in my head.

I saw one once in the wild, I was scuba diving in the Philippines and there were a bunch of small rocks/corals on the sea floor. As I was swimming towards one, the entire coral morphed and swam away - it was a cuttlefish. My mind was blown at how much it looked exactly like the other rocks.

NOVA did an hour episode on them. It’s called Kings of Camouflage. I was truly amazed by them after watching this episode. They are now my favorite animal by far.

Me neither. Was that the one from Pirates of the Caribbean?

I thought it was going to shoot out its long tentacles to grab it. Didn’t expect it to be so gentle.

I used to work somewhere with a lot of different marine species kept for research, and the cuttlefish were absolutely the most fun to feed because they would do this.
23
u/SuperHooligan 8d ago
I had never seen them hand fed, just when they do their hypnotoad act and then harpoon out their tentacles to capture something. If they were bigger they would be absolutely terrifying.

u/BaconCheeseZombie 7d ago
Giant Cuttlefish currently get to a meter in length, there's a chance there could be bigger ones coming in a few million years :)

Idk why cuttlefish come off as so cute. They should be creepy with the tentacles and beak and weird proportions but they’re adorable.

Ok now I want a cuttlefish.

Wait till you see them rapidly changing their colors and patterns. They are such amazing creatures.
50
u/Pinky_Boy 8d ago
dont forget that they're able to change the color of half their body separately to trick other cuttlefishes in their mating behavior

u/visualdosage 8d ago
The weaker males can camouflage as female to get past strong males, it's insane

They will also pulse rhythmically to "hypnotize" crabs to eat them without fear of their claws.

They are the only animal that can hypnotise it's prey, look it up on yt. The one with the crab

u/ambassador321 8d ago
I saw weasels hypnotizing bunny rabbits one time on YouTube by doing crazy flips and rolls. Was pretty wild

I posted this as a reply to another comment but I’m copying it here in case you want to watch an amazing episode of NOVA about them.

They don’t live very long. You’d go through several generations in a hamsters lifespan.
2
u/Nachtwandler_FS 8d ago
Some species are kept as pets but their lifespan is just 1-2 years. Not the best pet.

Cuttlefish are cute little weirdos. They're similar to octopuses in a lot of ways, too, which makes them even more interesting.
Seeing videos of cuttlefish always makes me smile.

So polite and gentle, considering how they normally hunt their food. They normally lash out with their tentacles to quickly ensnare prey. This was just like “oh for me? Thanks!”

Cuttlefish scare me for some reason. Maybe because it’s because they remind me of spiders. Amazingly quick predator. Spidery.

Considering this was marked as nsfw, I was expecting the guy to feed the cuttlefish and the last second of the video being that same cuttlefish on a platter. Glad it wasn’t lol

They can change both color and texture.

For a moment there really thought he was gonna get chomped by the fish behind him, like the cartoons usually show. Glad that wasn’t the case.
Genuinely cute the way it took the meal.

I think I've just found my dream job.
Actually, eff that, I would pay them to let me feed and care for the cuttlefish.

Aren’t cuttlefish cannabalistic? Keeping the big and small together seems asking for trouble

I hear those things are deadly poisonous
2
u/tacoma-tues 7d ago
They arent. People eat them, keep them as pets, use them for bait. They are fairly non dangerous. They may be venomous i know some octopus are but but nowhere near like blue ring octopus which are deadly.
