Fun facts about mud volcanoes: Mud volcanoes are often found on the seafloor. Also, the mud that erupts from them is rich in halite, or rock salt. They can be up to 700 meters high, and 10 kilometers wide (around 2,300 feet high and 6 miles wide).
We get them in New Zealand where the East Cape region is undergoing uplift and compression. Weak marine sediments get squashed between firmer material and the juices get sent to the surface during small seismic events. The salt is derived from the sea water in the sediment.
