Politics/Elections Ghosted by our senators
Has anyone had trouble getting a response from Slotkin and Peters. After writing emails Peters returned a form letter about receiving the message but Slotkin hasn't responded.

u/Lucy_Lucidity Feb 04 '25
Peters responds about 6 months later with a form letter that usually doesn’t have anything to do with what you contacted him about. Sometimes it’s in the ballpark of what you contacted him about but that’s rare.

u/NobleSturgeon Feb 04 '25
I know someone who works in government relations. Many years ago they were working on a particular issue and had meetings set up with all sorts of Michigan politicians. The only one they couldn't get in touch with was Peters. They tried and tried and tried but Peters was never around to meet. Finally one day they got a call from the office that he was available if they could come immediately. My friend dropped their entire afternoon schedule to rush to his office and...he wasn't there.
13
u/Hacker-Dave Feb 05 '25
Peters has been a miserable failure for Michigan. Of course, he doesn't care.

u/pause4effect Feb 04 '25
This is how it's been with any senator for decades. Reps are the way to go. I was told it's like the catholic church - reps are the saints you go through because god is too busy.
-1
u/william-o Ferndale Feb 05 '25
Yeah right like do people really think their US senator is going to have the time to answer their phone call personally?
29
u/Kimbolimbo Feb 05 '25
We expect his staff to respond to questions when asked. That’s why he has a staff. It’s pathetic how incompetence is expected.

1
u/Kalium Sherwood Forest Feb 05 '25 edited Feb 05 '25
If you've got ten million bosses, how much time do you and a staff of six have for each boss every day?
What if your bosses expect you do things besides talk to them?
1
u/Objective_Data7620 Feb 11 '25
Well, if you're doing your job well and in a representative way, you'll not have to worry about answering to all of them.

u/X16 Royal Oak Feb 04 '25
This is one of the most disappointing things about contacting your representative. It feels like complete apathy.

Yep! I asked his office for an explanation on why he voted for something, and I got a random form letter in response.

Came here to say this! That was as infuriating as it was tone deaf. Hope she enjoys her fish when she runs again in 2030, if there’s still a Senate seat to run for.

Literally the only reason I voted for that racist CIA trash is how garbage her opponents anti-trans ads were and it still makes me feel gross that I did.

u/TurnipMountain6162 Feb 04 '25
Haha: I saw that! Got to their social media feeds and complain - that usually rustles up some response

u/floriflow Feb 06 '25
Next she's going to have lobster with Collins and tell us about how concerned and disappointed she is.
68
u/MonsieurAK Woodbridge Feb 04 '25
Peters is running out the clock to retirement
32
u/Deviknyte Feb 05 '25
All the more reason he shouldn't be confirming these appointments. He's got nothing to lose.
12
u/matt_minderbinder Feb 05 '25
Often the payoff comes on the back end for some politicians. He could be more worried about his future no-show corporate board and insider think tank jobs. Former presidents and more well known pols get their payoff in highly paid corporate speeches. Even Joe Biden signed with the biggest Hollywood talent agency (CAA) recently.
66
u/nerdbilly Feb 04 '25

When I receive responses from either of them, it's usually months later and it's form letters that tell me why they're not doing the thing I asked them to do (e.g., stop funding genocide).
The "Oligarch Study" from 2014 should help explain their lack of responsiveness to the average person. And remember that Slotkin is "former" CIA, which is the private army of the capitalist ruling class, so she's there to protect those interests, not ours.

It’s why democrats go silent during the republican massacre as I like to call it. Your true politicians that everyone said are socialist are the only ones speaking up it seems. Democrats that let this go unopposed are doing it because it is the plan. The democratic party is guilty of collaboration. The two party system is a terrible system. Slotkin is considered right wing in other countries. She is probably happy the border deals were made.
29
u/BakedMitten Feb 05 '25
Every campaign ad of hers was more or less 'Im a CIA spook so you can trust me when I say I hate immigrants more than my opponent"
6
u/matt_minderbinder Feb 05 '25
I'd never say it's their plan but I'd agree that there's no way they'll feel the pain their constituents feel. These wealthy, insulated, powerful figures aren't in a life and death battle so they never fight like they are. In a way it almost feels worse when democratic leaders speak up as it feels like you're getting talked down to by wealthy, elderly, out of touch folk.

u/No_Telephone_6213 Feb 05 '25
Misplaced priorities, not carrying water from either of them but not sure what exactly what exactly they're expected to do to stop anything if they don't have the numbers... If anything I'd think the smarter thing to do is to call your republican congressmen but hey whatever floats your boat and makes y'all feel better about yourselves 🤷♂️
10
u/RubysDaddy Feb 04 '25
Hello, Let me introduce you to a politician.
Do you believe the shit they are peddling in their commercials where they say they can’t wait to get to work to help out the people in their community? Do you believe they really care about us?
Conversely, would this be how you preferred them spending their time? Returning emails from disgruntled civilians? I get it, they could have their team respond, but leads me back to them not really giving a rip about us regular folk.
9
u/willer251 Feb 04 '25
I think it’s better to call them every day and encourage others to do the same. The only way we can get their attention is by blowing up their phone line
9
u/twentytwodividedby7 Feb 05 '25
Y'all, if you want to know what's going on, reach out to Republican representatives and express your concerns. Ask them what they are doing to stop Musk from encroaching on your freedom.
Don't get into a partisan thing with them because they may actually agree and give information. My friend works for a Senator (D) and that was his advice.
You can be pissed all you want about lack of response, but the fact is 1) their offices are fucking flooded with concerns, so keep it up and 2) as the minority party they can't set the agenda.
I hate all of this, too, but we need to think strategically to get answers and action
5
u/Cultural_Ad8132 Feb 05 '25
I forget who it was but a prominent democrat said his office has been inundated with threats over the phone, in person, and emails to the point him and his family along with his staff had to have serious conversations about security. I think they’re fielding a lot of threats and hate right now and it’s taking time to get through it all

I heard Slotkin hasn't even set up a field office. I was on an organizing call last night that was trying to get 2,000 calls to their offices in 48 hours (so by tomorrow night) Hopefully that's working hence the voicemail box full.

Their offices are getting inundated. Their phone inboxes were getting so full people couldn't leave phone messages.
7
u/Kalium Sherwood Forest Feb 04 '25 edited Feb 04 '25
If you've never contacted your Rep or Senator before, it often feels like you're being ignored when you don't get a response in a reasonable amount of time (3-5 days).
The inconvenient reality is that they are usually busy and their staff is handling quite a lot of correspondence. Most of the time, your opinion on a given issue isn't any more urgent than any of the other correspondence they have to deal with. You can usually expect a form letter back at most, rather than a personal and thoughtful response.
14
u/Away-Revolution2816 Feb 04 '25
They probably are aware of their constituents concerns and responding to them, unless automatically, would take a huge amount of time.
13
u/steyr911 Feb 04 '25
Boo. Part of democracy is making yourself heard. Just bc they don't respond doesn't mean we stop trying.
15
u/DeliciousMinute1966 Feb 04 '25
Can anyone imagine how many calls their offices are getting because of those demons in the White House? Give them some grace. Peters may have checked out lol! Jk…I doubt that seriously,
Peters office has helped me in the past with 2 situations ; Stabenow and Whitmer’s office responded to me in a timely manner.
Way back when, the late Senator Carl Levins office really came through for me with a military situation. I’ve had good experiences with the legislators I’ve voted for.
9
u/Sorry-Association-92 Feb 04 '25
This is nice to hear. But that said, they need to be inundated with calls. And I’m glad to hear people are still calling. I’ve sent some emails and not heard anything
4
u/DeliciousMinute1966 Feb 04 '25
🙄 of course they need to hear from us. I’m sure I acknowledged that.
I’m positive the reason people aren’t getting responses is for THAT reason. They’re getting slammed, which is good.
1
u/Otherwise_Unit_2602 Feb 06 '25
Agree. I’ve had productive dealings with Peter’s on a pressing issue in the past but I’m very disappointed in his confirmation votes.
5
u/holesmcgee69 Feb 04 '25
Peters told me he’s proud of the non work he’s doing/ the trump appointees, Slotkin said she’s get back to me… she did say in her FP interview that she’s not going to oppose trump tho sooooo fuck both of them. Primary both their asses

u/Cardinal_350 Feb 05 '25
I don't know what you're expecting. Do you expect them to write you a handwritten notorized letter delivered with a parade? The politician doesn't even see your email. His staff does and then jams it into the statistics. That 97 page anger manifesto you write them gets boiled down into "Mad about X" then they slam it into the statistics. The woman in the Michigan sub that works in an office said it's been non stop people screaming into the phone. No one will deal with that shit and you get hung up on.

It is astounding to me that she has never been questioned about just what she did in her "two tours in Iraq" that got her moved directly to the White House--right in the middle of the use of "enhanced interrogation techniques."
They don't ask because they know--and don't want you to.

With many congress reps. I have had a lot of luck with contacting them. Usually, their aid will respond. Mind you, this is an issue with the feds stiffing my company. Etc. I have even bumped into reps out and about. And they take time to talk to me.
Peters...... I was at a medc convention that he sponsored. Peters didnt fly in. Didnt speak in person.
Instead, it was a tone deaf video of him thanking us for engaging with the state municipalities. Spoken to us like we were peons. Everyone looked around as if this guy thought we were wasting his time.
My advice is try to get in touch with an aid that works there. They do listen.

u/nomcormz Feb 05 '25
Gary Peter has NEVER answered the phone. Ever. Been calling for years. He has like 8 different numbers and they either go straight to voicemail or it has a busy signal. Slotkin also never answers but at least it rings.
For house rep, Stevens has actually answered or called me back. She sucks, but at least they pick up the fucking phone.
That said, Indivisible Michigan has several events scheduled with Slotkin and Peters where you can voice your concerns! Peters Feb 10, Slotkin Feb 20. Register here: https://www.statewideindivisiblemi.com/event

Slotkin’s voicemail was full when I called this afternoon. So I sent an email instead. I’ve never actually gotten to speak with anyone in Peters’ office. I spoke at length with Dingell’s aide.

I’ve called hundreds of times over the last 1.5 years and gotten 2 form letter responses from Peters’ office, both generic bullshit, not addressing what I called about. So that’s probably what you can expect, and it’ll take a bit.
1
u/langotang0 Feb 05 '25
Call Congress DAILY. All numbers! Fill up all the voice-mail boxes. Maybe (hopefully) we can send a message if their phones are bombarded with their constituents concerns about Trumps actions and future plans.
In District 12 (Livonia, Redford, Southfield, Westland, Inkster, Garden City, Dearborn, Dearborn Hts, Westside Detroit), call:
Rep Rashida Tlaib Local : (313) 463-6220 DC: (202) 225-5126
Sen Gary Peters Local: (616) 233-9150 DC: (202) 224-6221

Slotkin responded to me a couple days after I emailed her. It was a form letter but specific.

I've never gotten a response from Slotkin. Of all of our politicians, she cares the least about her constituents. As in, I'm convinced she almost never thinks about us at all.
Form letters are par for the course from Peters. He usually follows up several months later with a separate form letter letting us know why he blew off constituents' input. If he DOESN'T plan to blow off our input then the separate form letter comes within a week or two so he can celebrate what a man of the people he is and then ask us for money
edited to be meaner bc they deserve it
