Food/Drink detroit-style pizza is great and all... but let's be real: the coney is king.

Michigan style Almond Boneless chicken.

It wasn't until a couple years ago I learned why ordering almond chicken anywhere else was so disappointing.

u/Georgiaonmymindtwo Feb 15 '25
I found this article about 6 months ago after ordering ABC in Georgia and getting cashew chicken instead. I had to explain to the restaurant that that is not what I ordered and they looked at me like I was insane.
https://www.eater.com/2018/10/30/18010390/almond-boneless-chicken-war-su-gai-michigan
They are nice people and their food is good but they didn’t know about ABC and its history. Neither did I. Now we all know. They didn’t add it to their menu. 🙁

Almonds and Cashews have such wildly different flavor profiles too... as a bartender obsessed with flavor prolifes and lives and dies regarding recipes with the 'Flavor Bible' that would infuriate me

Interesting! I took ordered almond chicken in GA and got something unexpected! I never knew it was a MW thing!

I love me some coney dogs, but in terms of flavor, Detroit style pizza is king IMO.

15
u/Alextricity Feb 15 '25
it is steamed, it's just gluten free. RIP. 😞

u/JoPaNe91 Feb 15 '25

truly winds up similar enough with chili all over it, the inconvenience and cost of it is what's dumbest about it.

With all the great food options in Detroit, the last thing I’m getting is a hot dog.
9
u/Gnarlsaurus_Sketch Feb 15 '25
According to some if not many people, I'm a pretentious SOB when it comes to food.
That said, there is absolutely a time and place for the Coney dog, and it occurs quite often.

u/Maxwell-Druthers Feb 15 '25
lol THANK YOU

I understand the urge to defend the city and the things it is known for, I always say nice things about Detroit, but I’m not gonna ever be the type of person to ignore our downfalls either. A hot dog with sauce is low effort, low quality slop.

u/Icummaizeandblue Feb 17 '25
What about if you had an hour before a tigers game? Perfect time to enjoy a coney.

I’d stop at Second Best for a chicken sandwich.

They’re ok, definitely nothing to write home about. I just get unjustifiably annoyed at people making them representative of Detroit food/culture lol. Think I might eat one every few years and usually feel guilty about it after 😂 It’s just gotten to be such a cliche at this point. I honestly don’t know anyone in the city or the surrounding area who is ever like “let’s go get coney dogs!”, but Detroit style pizza places are a regular destination/craving.
3
u/CynicalPsychonaut Feb 16 '25
The food scene in Detroit is amazing.
But sometimes you just want a coney dog.
4
u/Alextricity Feb 15 '25
well good thing i'm comparing ds pizza to ds coneys and not ds coneys to the culinary gamut then. 💀

Detroit style is so inferior to Flint it’s not even funny. A glorified chili dog.

Potato salad with a coney? Brave. One needs a strong gut to make that combo happen. Coney and a loose, heavy chilli and fries. Drink of choice. Burp.

Seeing Detroit style pizza spread all over the world, while Detroit coneys remain a local, rat-infested delicacy says it all
1
u/Alextricity Feb 15 '25
irrelevant. the reason is that people in general refuse to cook "weird" animal parts.
in this case, hearts.

Flint style Coney is king. You folks need Koegel’s down there. There are a few copycat recipe’s online. I still put ketchup on mine, fuck the dirty looks

The coney is king! It’s tradition in my Detroit/Windsor based family to have them for breakfast. Coneys and hash browns for prez.

u/a22202 Feb 16 '25
just finished eating a coney off the street while walking home from the bar. life is good in detroit

I tried to order a coney in Lima Ohio. They looked at me like I lost my mind ha ha ha
2
u/jejones487 Feb 15 '25
Too messy for a big mustache. No coneys for me. Pizza all the way over coneys everyday.
3
u/ConeyDogs_420 Feb 15 '25
Excuses, excuses. Fear not getting chili and mustard in your beard/mustache.
3
u/dannydirtbag Feb 15 '25
My friend, you can fork and knife it. Be fancy. Don’t cheat yourself.
-4
u/jejones487 Feb 15 '25
My mustache is 6 inches long. No, I can't put that slop through my mouth opening without making a mess. It's just something I've had to accept growing a handlebar mustache that wider than my head. It comes with lifestyle changes like not being able to eat runny food. I can eat soup as long as the soup stays inside the spoon until it gets all the way inside my mouth. I can eat things on a fork that have sauce on them without wiping the sauce all over my mustache on the way in. Everyone is different. It's not that I don't enjoy the food. It's more that I don't enjoy the messy eating experience. I'd rather consume something that goes in my mouth without making a mess.
1
u/dannydirtbag Feb 15 '25
Oh, ok. I have a buddy who used hair clips on his face to eat.
1
u/jejones487 Feb 15 '25
I really relate to this. If I don't put wax in my mustache to style it up, I can't eat anything without making a mess that will take longer to clean up than it took me to eat in the first place. If I ate that coney, I would need to wash my face and mustache in the sink before I left and then restyle my mustache before I left the restaurant.
2
u/cfbonly Feb 15 '25
You just gotta lean into and get used to wiping your face with napkins a ton.
Just because I look like a damn snack doesn't mean I'm missing on out one.

That implies a hot dog is more important to me than a mustache I've committed years of my life to growing and showing off at competitions. It would be pretty ignorant of me to listen to some random stranger about my styling habits like you know what beat for me. What would I sacrifice something important to me for a $1 hotdog that I won't enjoy. That's honestly the shittiest advice anyone has gave me in years.

u/MissingMichigan Feb 15 '25
You understand this whole post is meant to be a lighthearted discussion with people making jokes, etc, right?
Maybe eat a Snickers and cheer up, Bud.

Not true coneys if the coney serving them doesn't have at least a small rat problem.
0
u/Georgiaonmymindtwo Feb 15 '25
This picture does not look like it was taken recently.
Beans and potato salad are warm weather accompaniments to dogs and there is green grass in the background.
Not that that takes away from your point. Just saying.

Not really. It’s hot dogs with chilli on it. They’re alright and all, but nothing near justifiable the way people around here go bonkers over them, and the cliche American vs Lafayette schtick. Detroit style pizza on the other hand is truly great and finally getting worldwide recognition for being the amazing pizza that it is.

u/RevolutionaryAge47 Feb 15 '25
Beyond disgusting. I can't imagine the amount of self hatred one has to have in order to abuse their body consuming such vile bilge.
-3
u/DeliciousMinute1966 Feb 15 '25
That plate of food looks 🤮
None of that matches lol

you'd absolutely hate to see most of the food we make then. 😊

"Detroit Style Pizza" is just making pizza like Buddy's, which was never that great in the first place.
If you can't wander in at any hour, bleary-eyed, dreading the upcoming workday or shameful drive home after an ill-advised hookup, vaguely growl something that may or may not be words, and have someone put a plate of reasonably-priced food in front of you in under five minutes, it's just some bougie restaurant.

My vote is for a Greek salad with a ton of gyro meat and pink Greek dressing.
