Probably not with the tariffs being set with Canada. Even if we don't buy electricity from them, we use the grid interconnect and without that relationship or if there are price increases to that relationship that could very likely lead to increased prices or at least decreased reliability

What we can do is join it and be active in it. Sadly, decades of corporatism have convinced the american public that, despite all evidence to the contrary, civic engagement comes in the form of: Disorganized, demandless, one-day boycotts; Voting; Leaving a message on your rep's answering machine; And holding up signs. All of these things are mostly individual actions that place practically no pressure on decisionmakers.
In order to be effective, we can't do one-time things like sign a petition, we have to form coherent, persistent groups, that exert more pressure than the opposition's lobbyists who spends 40 hours a week getting paid to exert pressure.
So join the group, be active, help strategize, put your heads together. We cannot get anything done as individuals, we have to work together.

No. But the problem is that we have both energy that is too cheap, gasoline that is too cheap, a state government that doesn't want to actually regulate the utilities, utilities that fucking suck, municipalities that refuse to enforce building code, and zero interest in funding things like building envelope retrofits that could drastically reduce people's bills.
Realistically, all of these things need to be addressed-- the most important being fixing existing building stock or building buildings the right way in the first place. The state has grossly shirked its responsibility under the pro-corporate, lazy approach to environmental and energy topics of the Whitmer administration (and I fucking voted for her twice).

I voted for Abdul Syed in the dem primary. Know why? He was endorsed by Bernie which tells me he actually understands that important utilities like this can’t be publically traded on Wall Street and must be non profits that only serve Michiganders. Sadly, Dte and other big corps (bcbsm—her father was an executive) put immense lobbying money into the Whitmer campaign to defeat el Syed. The number one election you should always focus on is the dem primary. The minute you see any candidate taking money from a sketchy non profit or a large corporation stop supporting that person immediately.

It's fkn terrible. I live alone, but in an older home near Dexter and Davison, and my bill was around 375 last month. I actually put my heat down to 65 day round, and unplugged every unnecessary appliance. Just a water heater, furnace, fridge, my Internet router, and my cats water fountain. I even got rid of my air fryer and unplugged my microwave. I watch TV for about 2 hours after work each night and this is just fkn redicilous.
I was always the person who was "going to die in this city", but after 35 years of being here, I'm planning to go off grid once I can get property tf away from here when Trump tanks our economy... No DTE/consumers, no water hook up, nothing. Fuck this fucking country.

Air fryer is more efficient than oven, if the oven is electric.
Unplugging your microwave saves almost nothing, but at least it’s something.
Induction cooktop ($60 Restaurant Equippers) is more efficient than electric coil or glass electric cooktop.
Hard to guess people’s details.
In Detroit DTE supplies electricity and gas.
Oakland County it’s DTE electricity, Consumers gas.

i’ve heard that keeping it at a constant 72 should save power vs letting it go down to 55 and then bringing it up to 72 when you get home from work. furnace has to work overtime to get the temp back up.

Short answer, no.
Long answer, their string of initiatives to get the grid up to the standard that other power companies have had for years are extremely expensive and they are in the beginning of the rollout for these things.
Source: I work for a company that works closely with DTE.
Fun note: I’ve heard out of town linemen describe DTE’s grid as 80yrs out of date.

Honest question - I see these bills, like the one the OP posted here, and I ask myself... how?
I've a thousand square foot condo with three people living in it, and the highest our DTE bill has ever been is $121, and it hasn't been more than $85 in the last three years.
My parents' home is 2200 sq. ft., and the worst their bill has ever been is about $200.
I'm not trying to attack anyone here. Is it people using electric heating? Is it just never turning any electronics off in your home? I'm genuinely stumped.

does this figure include gas? or is it just electric?
the fluctation in people's "DTE bills" is primarily from winter heating, whether that be gas or electric. if your "DTE bill" is only electric, and you have gas heating with another company (Consumers), that's really comparing apples to oranges.
if your thousand square foot condo shares walls with another unit, that also helps. a lot of the worst bills are old leaky single family homes that don't have the benefit of sharing heat with other units.

Yes, both homes have Consumers for gas and use gas furnaces. For my condo, gas and electricity commonly come to about 150/mo.

Combined. Typically at one goes up, the other comes down. DTE peaks in the summer, Consumers in the winter.
Not a new condo, either, built in the 50s, no real roof or other insulation updates in the last ten years, roof is fifteen years old and due to be replaced in the next 3-5

I’m in a 1000 sw ft SFH home. Not great insulation, two dogs in and out all day. 70-72 setting on the thermostat. Gas appliances, my consumers bill was $106 ($93 in Jan) and dte was $150 both months. I genuinely don’t understand where some of these bills come from because we are not at all an energy conscious household, pretty terrible in fact if I’m being honest. Feb 10-15 my bedroom window was open the entire time keeping the air fresh for my sick wife, lol

I live alone in a 1750 sqft single family home and my Feb DTE bill was $67. That seems crazy. Do you have electric heaters? (I heat with gas through consumers)
Edit: out of curiosity I checked my Consumers gas bill for Feb and it was $195

it might, but there's a lot of leaky apartments out there. OP could be using lots of electric heat as well which is particularly inefficient and expensive compared to heating with gas.
edit: I see OP also describes it as a "house" so it's probably not going to get much benefit from the other unit, that effect is most pronounced in larger buildings. perhaps a poorly insulated duplex.

A friend of mine has a house that was on a slab, but had forced air running under the home. It was a 700sq/ft two bedroom house with a crawlspace and attached garage. Heating it cost him $300 a month. I was gobsmacked.
I got a chance to look in his crawlspace, and found that two of his ducts were disconnected, and blowing heat under his home. After repairing this problem, he was down to $100 a month.

You can buy window covering/plastic which temporarily seals on with a hair dryer. Can save you a ton, even if it’s just on your worst windows. Also get some draft guards for the bottom of your doors. If you have an upstairs, consider keeping it’s door closed so the heat isn’t going right up - will keep the downstairs warmer w less energy required

But...my energy bill last month from DTE was higher than my gas bill?! That NEVER used to happen. It was $279 for...reasons. In the summer? Sure. In February? Fuck. You.
I bet my AC bill hits $600 in July.

Mine is only around 100 a month and I leave everything on all day and work from home so I'm really surprised by these prices. I do have geothermal for heat so that might be the difference, but my heat was generally around 50 when I paid for it.

DTE doesn't supply their electricity from Canada, so there won't likely be a massive price increase. But, they do have a grid interconnect which would likely result in some price increase and potentially reliability issues

Quit using so much electricity between 3pm and 7pm. The kilowatt•hour rate between those times is literally 10x as much.

Nowhere near 10x as much. In the wintertime, it’s 19.4 cents/KWh for peak hours (3-7) and 17.64 cents for off peak: 1.1x the off-peak rate.
This goes up during the summer to 23.39 cents/KWh (1.32x the off-peak rate).

Trust me, it's not just "don't use electricity between peak hours." There are lots of other things going on that /u/sourmeat_buffet isn't letting us know about. Mainly that A) they are not getting their heat through DTE utilities and B) they aren't aware that DTE provides more than electricity.
Notice that Sourmeat doesn't tell anyone if they rent or mortgage, their situation, their structure, if they have multiple service providers, solar panel credits, none of that. Dude is just lying by omission, as they say.

No, but you can go solar or geothermal. The costs and payback time are a lot better than even 5 years ago, even with our sunlight. I look forward to installing them soon, almost as much regarding the principle of not giving them my money, but it also makes good financial sense

Comparisons are meaningless without details:
Number of people, gas or electricity for: cooking? Heating? (And then square footage, number of floors, kind of electric heat if electric), hot water? Dryer? Is your gas from DTE or from consumers?

To be fair we just had the coldest winter in some years. It felt like we was in 20 degree and under weather for 2 straight months. Our furnaces work hard during the coldest months. that will cause a high bill Depending on how you managing it.. Some people have don't have the insulated windows, have their heat on full blast without auto and be complaining why its High. Some of the high bills is user mismanagement.

Not to throw cold water on the DTE hate train but that sounds ridiculous. My house in winter is rarely over $150 with 2 people working from home 5 days a week. I guess with an apparent you may have electric heaters? If not, there’s no reason it should be that high unless you’re constantly running something else that uses a ton of electricity.

Here, with details:
S Oakland County 1400 sq ft 100 year old single story house, 1 person.
Gas steam boiler, cooktop, water heater, dryer. Heat 68 day, 65 night. Consumers gas $25 summer to $200 January. Last year was peak $300, but I was surfing heat to 72 a lot.
Electric oven, microwave, air fryer, induction cooktop. Around $70/mo year round. Lights are fancy color LED (Hue) on a schedule and I might typically have 20 bulbs on all evening and 3 outdoor lights all night.
So < $100 summer (no A/C) to $300 worst winter month total gas+electricity.

At $300^ a month one of two things is true. You either:
- Have a meter theft issue
- Have electric heat (radiator) and are avoiding paying a large consumers energy bill for gas heat
If you have gas heat that's an insane bill. If you don't then it's pretty normal, that's why (electric) radiators suck.
Side note: unplugging your microwave and turning off your lights are saving you pennies, maybe dollars, but definitely not enough to put even a $20 back in your pocket. Every penny counts, but I think some people here misunderstand the energy usage of their appliances.

My wife and I just paid ours yesterday. 100 year old house with original windows, boiler etc. $600 for both gas and electric. We do what we can and we’re really responsible with energy consumption but there are some things we can’t change. Makes me want to just stop paying. I do sub-contracted work for DTE and they did me the amazing favor of giving me a $35 credit last year.

Is that electric and gas?
If that's just electric something is wrong. To give you an idea I have:
- Approximately 5k square feet of conditioned space in my house, built in 2002.
- 2 fridges and a large freezer
- Family of 4
- A well (so pump)
- A network rack full of gear running 24/7 and home automation gear all over the house. 5 TVs.
- All LED lighting
- dryer is gas
- Gas furnace (2)
- Induction range
- I work from home so someone it there almost all the time.
My electric bill last month was $250.

Has the building owner ever heard of insulation?? The trouble with paying your own utilities is they have no incentive to make the property more energy-efficient.
(And on the flipside, the trouble with utilities-included is that the tenant has no incentive to use energy responsibly. There must be some fair way to split it.)

Typically they go down as it gets warmer but with Canada about to cancel their energy support DTE, a for profit company, they'll 100% pass on any added costs to us AND will likely increase it more to increase profits since they have a scapegoat for the increases. They'll pretend like there's nothing they can do but they will see record profits and shareholders ROI.

How do you have a two bedroom apartment and your light bill is that high? For reference I have a two bedroom apartment and my light bill is around 80 bucks a month. Am I apartment is about 1,200 sq ft. My shorty she has a house and between her light bill and gas bill she's only paying around 230 maybe 300 if she cranks the heat up. Something's not right on your end.

Windsorite here. Your electricity costs are ABSURD. My entire massive house costs like $300 CAD (or like 225 USD) max in the summer with my AC and my pool heater on. In the winter it's less than half that. I had no idea your power rates were that insane, you guys are getting fleeced.

We haven't had any deflation...well really ever....this is the nature of our markets (even though the energy market isn't really a marker anymore) now. You can expect prices to always increase (maybe just at slower rates than others).

They're all thieves. My experience wasn't with DTE, though. It was Consumers Power. I was renovating my first home. It should have been condemned. It wasn't connected to the grid. It had a fuel oil furnace. They still sent me a $200+ bill before we ever connected the mast to the power lines.
Real fucking interesting math, there.

Serious question Is this an apartment thing? Or a location thing? Both? I live 35 minutes north of Detroit and my highest i have ever seen is 110 for a family of three.

My February gas bill is...$130 and my electric bill is $92. I'm running a 1700 sqft 3 bedroom house built in 1986 with 4 people in it. House stays at 65.

Trump promised energy costs will go down 50% in one year from taking office. I have not seen any action from that administration as of now that supports that promise he made. I don't believe he will make good in his promise.

The solution is to replace DTE with municipally owned electric companies or coops. The closest municipal electric company to Detroit is in Wyandotte, where they have much cheaper rates. Ann Arbor is in the process of replacing DTE right now.

Is it gas that's so expensive? My energy bill for a 1200 sqft condo is only $50-70 in the winter. Last month was $65. My HOA pays for gas, so maybe that's why it's so much cheaper for me? The summer is a different story. If I run my ancient AC unit, it goes up to $300-400 a month.

$600 for our most recent DTE gas/electric bill for 1500 SF 100 year old house.
We keep the downstairs at 60 and upstairs at 55-60, closing doors and heating rooms with space heaters for extra heat as we need. Been out of work for a few months now and so thankful for my partner's job literally keeping the lights on.
So sorry to hear you're experiencing the same nonsense in a small apt. DTE seems hell-bent on making customers atone for its own decades-long poor planning.

I had a bad meter. I've been down about $50 year over year since they replaced it. I was getting $300+ bills in the winter. It was ridiculous.

That doesn’t sound right for an apartment AT ALL. My highest bill ever for my 2br 2bth is 192.00. And in winter it’s under $70. My thermostat is at 69 degrees in the winter and 71 in the summer.
What do youth k lends itself to your high price other than DTE greed?
