Talk Detroit Anyone elses DTE bill high?

Post image
317 Upvotes

Just moved into a new house. Just 2 people, previously there was a family of 5 or 6 here and never paid more than $500. For reference, our first billing cycle was 20 days and we used 1500kw of energy.. this month with just 10 extra days they claim we somehow used 5000kw+. So youre telling me we 3x our use without changing or adding anything?? My question is how? We keep everything off because we are at work all day. No washer. No dryer. Ontop of that, based off the insight app we are using MORE electricity at night when we are asleep than during the day. Im baffled? And wtf is a distribution charge..

Talk Detroit You don't even go here.

Only been in this thread for a lil bit but I am seeing a pattern of people that don't or barely even live in Detroit always talking about how bad it is. It is always from some second hand account like "my friend had his car broken in to" or "my cousin saw a shootout" or some made up bullshit. You live in Birmingham fam...quit talking about things you ain't even experienced. Some days it's amusing, but most days it's annoying. Was just reading a post about "Should I go to this random street x this random cross street" and bunch of folk like "ooooooh don't go over there unless you wanna get shot 9 times, get robbed in broad daylight, and get called the N word even though you're white!" Hilarious. All the "my pal got (insert bad thing)" stories soon come after. Just an observation that this Reddit has a lot of "anti" sentiment for a blog about the city.

Talk Detroit If you're a Detroiter, here's why you should care

Post image
559 Upvotes

You may say "Detroit has it's own problems, why should I care?"

Michigan has 3,468 Title 1 schools, hundreds in Detroit. Funding axed with the death of the DoE.

85,680 seniors and people with disabilities in Detroit collect social security. Every single one is at risk of losing it. The lease for the SS building in Detroit has been terminated.

There have been mass firings at the VA in Detroit. Detroit veterans are now struggling to access Healthcare and other services.

Want to get out of the city and see our states more natural beauties? The USFS that looks after our state forests, cut. "Waste". NOAA which protects the Great Lakes, cut. Waste again.

None of this is normal. None of it is acceptable. Detroiters take care of each other. Come out to the DIA on 4/5 and do what we do best, fucking fight. For our community, for our neighbors, for our rights. Fight for each other.

Work/school are 30 minutes away from my house. I can get on 696, turn a 30 minute drive into 15. Now with traffic I suspect getting home will take no less then 40 minutes.

Talk Detroit Feeling like 2008

I'm tired of hearing about how great our economy is. My husband, who's in supply chain, was laid off from Ford 14 months ago then laid off again yesterday from a large supplier corp. Global cutbacks. Some of his colleagues that were also laid off from Ford also got laid off again with him today.

To make matters worse we're in the fourth quarter, and most companies won't be looking to hire and Xmas is coming up fast. He got one month severance and one month medical. All I'm reading about is how it's taking people hundreds of applications and months on end to find something.

I know we won't go homeless but it's absolutely scary and I feel utterly helpless. It sucks because, I'm not being biased here, my husband is such a hard worker and genuinely cares about any job he's given.

I hope that fat cat CEO enjoyed his evening last night.

Talk Detroit How do you pronounce ‘Detroit’ ?

Teaching my kids phonics and I realized I often emphasize the ‘D’ in Detroit. I’m a Flint native, but have lived in Detroit for a few years now.

My wife, NOT from Michigan, says ‘Detroit’ as one word, with no real emphasis on the ‘D’

Idk maybe I’m just losing my mind haha

Talk Detroit Sheetz gas station uproar

Can someone please explain to me why everyone's all bent out of shape about Sheetz gas stations coming to their neighborhood? All I hear on the news is NIMBY. They seem like a nice, clean place to get gas, a quick snack and all that good stuff. Why are so many people protesting?

Talk Detroit Bobcat Bonnie’s employees: your health insurance has been canceled due to ownerships money problems

If you work at any of the remaining locations. Your health insurance has been likely stopped as of November 1st. Ownership has failed to continue coverage, therefore your coverage or ability to receive supplemental insurance (Cobra) has stopped. A piece of advice, get a labor lawyer, or make a claim to the state for labor violations. Ownership has placed their own interests and preservation over your health, and the health of your families. Go ahead, call the insurance company and see for yourself. You don’t want to work for someone who would do this to you, or not even bother to tell you. It’s not just bouncing paychecks anymore, it’s your health. Leadership needs to be held accountable, don’t work another day for people like them. Plenty of reputable jobs out there, do yourself a favor.

Talk Detroit How does anyone afford the property taxes here?

My wife and I bought our house in 2022, the property tax cap then expired in 2023. The home was assessed at $159k with a taxable value of the same amount in 2024. I logged in to pay my mortgage today and it had nearly doubled bc the bank said we owed $12,000 in property taxes for 2024. We are obviously outside of the window for appeal for this and I don’t think the assessed value of the house is wrong but is it possible there is some mistake here with the percentage that they are taxing us? If so, is there anything we can do? This makes living here unaffordable for us, which as DINK household with two people who make decent salaries, that feels crazy to say.

Talk Detroit It's unbelievable we've managed to mess up our Auto Show

I understand cars are now unveiled via social media and I understand that the coastal shows are more attractive to luxury brands and I also understand that as cars advance so does the pull of the CES in Vegas. But what I don't understand is how we botched the clout of our show through thay disastrous move to summer and why we've allowed a world to exit where a city like Chicago, a city of soybean pork belly futures should have a larger and more prominent auto show than the Motor City - a city whose very name is the metonym for the American car industry. It's an embarrassment and a complete failure on our governmental and business leadership.

Talk Detroit Isn’t it kind of strange to think back in the day what Devil’s Night meant vs now?

When I was a kid and basically through my 20s all hell broke loose the night before Halloween. Then Angels Night volunteers pretty much put an end to it. Under Dennis Archer if I’m not mistaken? Hard to believe that used to be a real problem that people would go nuts and burn the city the night before Halloween.

Talk Detroit Detroit Metro Airport is among the most expensive to fly from

Thumbnail
axios.com

No surprise here! Delta’s total grip on DTW is a complete rip off, especially for domestic flights. Because they and their partners literally have half the airport to themselves, they can charge whatever they want, and we’re stuck paying absurdly high fares. I’ve been saying this for years but compare flights out of Chicago to major U.S. cities, and they’re often hundreds of dollars cheaper than flying from Detroit.

Some routes are up to $1,000 more expensive just because Delta can get away with it. It’s insane. When a flight from Chicago to Boston is $200 cheaper than from Detroit, something is seriously wrong. It’s blatantly anti-competitive.
