News [Cam Robinson] It is expected that Detroit will sign 6'5, free agent netminder, Arvid Holm at the conclusion of the season. The 26-year-old won the Honken Trophy as the SHL's top netminder by posting a 0.925 SV% across 35 games for Rögle BK. He was originally drafted by Winnipeg

I'm assuming with Augustine going back to MSU next year, the expectation is Holm will back up Cossa in Grand Rapids next year.

With Cossa maybe getting the call a few different times and Gylander or the other goalie backing up Holm
Let’s hope he works out as even an AHL goalie

I’m assuming that’s worst case. My bet is the plan is for him to be in Detroit.

I think the plan is to roll with Mrazek and Talbot, and when one of them inevitably gets injured, Cossa is the first call up.

If this is the case I'm concerned the no playoff streak is going to reach double digits

Realistically, its very doubtful that Cossa can just roll in and be an improvement over Talbot and Mrazek to start next year.
That said if he is the better goalie, I think they would have no issues waiving Mrazek and sending him to GR. His contract prevents him from being a logical waiver claim.

Throughout the history of the NHL rookie goaltenders have come in and have been sensational. Of course not every rookie goaltender and some of them fizzle out but if Cossa is ever going to be anything we need to see. If it were up to me I'd give him the starting job at the start of next season and let him sink or swim. Sometimes you just got to throw the kid in the deep end of the pool. At least then we'd know and be done with platooning 3 career back up goalies.

Concerned that our no playoff streak will continue? We have some really good young players and a strong pool of prospects that will eventually make the Wings a contender. But next year the chances of making the playoffs will again be slim. Hate to be the barer of bad news.

We saw that already in Colorado. Granted it’s the end of the season when everyone brings up prospects to get experience, but I think they’re close to calling Cossa up here regularly.

Highly unlikely they add an SHL goaltender and expect him to walk straight into the NHL.

My argument more comes from obviously Steve wasn’t happy with the goaltending and grabbed Mrazek. Chances are they hope Holm could push to play in the NHL and at worst he’s in the AHL.

Steve has shown the last couple years that he would like to have 3 goalies on the roster. Holm seems like a good candidate to be a cheap #3 goalie.
As far as Cossa goes, I bet they either want him to be #1 in GR again or show that he can be at least the #2 in Detroit. But they’ll want him to beat out at least two of Mrazek, Talbot, and Holm in training camp to claim that spot. They should now have enough goalies in either case, depending on how Cossa looks in September.

We don't need 3 goalies. The reason why we have them is because they're all mediocre and are not trusted to perform on a consistent basis. One of the many things Stevie struggled in is finding a starting goaltender.

You could be right on the reasoning behind carrying three. Doesn’t really change anything for next year though.
Given how it’s played out, I think Steve has handled the goalie situation fine. No point in shelling out assets or a big contract for a proven top-tier goalie if the rest of the team isn’t there yet and you believe in the young guys you have coming in the next 1-3 years.

Yes there are tons of starting goalies on the market..... I swear people are just critical without actually thinking of the entire picture.

The reason we carried three last year was because of asset management. We couldn't send down Lyon without exposing him to waivers. So we kept him on. This year they actually sent down Husso when it became apparent he was shit. So no, it's not that Yzerman likes having three goalies. That narrative is ignorant.

AHL signing imo
NHL talbot mrazek and Cossa call up
Ahl Cossa Holm and Gylander/Bednar call ups or third
Echl Gylander/Bednar and someone

I mean… On one hand, why sign a goalie when they already have Cossa, Gylander, Bednar, Campbell, and Alexander in the minors as well as Guimond, Augustine and Miller coming up? On the other hand, when you can sign the winner of the Honken Trophy you kind of have to.

Augustine is staying at MSU, so this is instead of him for now I guess

But why would he sign here if he’s 100% going to be the backup. Have to think of it from his POV, he’s a fairly good free agent. He must have got plenty of AHL offers. I know people won’t like it but feels like the team thinks they might not be able to sign Augustine, otherwise this kid wouldn’t sign somewhere that he doesn’t really have a path to the NHL.
Only saving grace is that maybe they promised he’s the first callup. And he thinks our duo isn’t that sturdy, which is fair tbh.

Cossa, Gylander, Bednar, Campbell, and Alexander in the minors as well as Guimond, Augustine and Miller
Because only two of those guys don't actively suck.

Mrazek and Talbot are the NHL tandem. We can run three goalies if Cossa can’t be denied as an NHLer next year.
Cossa is presumably the majority starter in GR. Campbell is a pending free agent, Holm will likely take his place.
Gylander and Bednar will continue to be the ECHL tandem, with the hotter of the two getting any necessary AHL call-ups.
Augustine is going back to MSU and it appears Guimond is heading to Yale.
Alexander is barely getting starts in the ECHL this season, I imagine he’s the ECHL third next year too. He’s also a pending RFA, perhaps we simply don’t qualify him.
Miller is having a pretty lackluster season in the OHL…he could stay in juniors or step into Alexander’s role of ECHL 3rd.

Augustine gonna get his master's degree at MSU.
Just Kidding he'd be a free agent after his senior year lol

Why not give cossa some games?

Dont want to ruin his development behind a bad defensive team. Better to have him build confidence than shatter it right now.

‘25-‘26 Detroit Red Wings: Oops, all goalies!
