Question Wizz Air delayed our snowboard bag, refuses to compensate, insurance also ghosting — what are our options?
Hey everyone, just wanted to share our experience and see if anyone’s been through something similar or has advice.
We flew with Wizz Air from Copenhagen to Kutaisi in early March. Upon arrival, our snowboard bag never showed up. We reported it at the airport and got an irregularity report. The bag contained snowboard equipment and most of our snowboarding clothes - basically everything for the trip.
We had to buy new clothes (about €800 worth) and rent gear for the week, which wasn’t cheap or fun. Eventually, we sent a formal compensation claim, listing all the documented expenses. Their response? A generic copy-paste message saying they won’t compensate for “consequential damages” like rentals, and they'll only cover 50% of essential item purchases (if anything). The most ridiculous - they even haven't offered to refund the luggage transport fee they charged for the bag that never arrived.
To make things worse, our travel insurance through Revolut (XCover) denied the claim because the baggage tag was under my partner’s name, even though the whole trip was booked under mine and paid with my Revolut card. We’re legally married, same booking, same flight, same insurance plan — but they use that as an excuse to ghost the claim. Their support is basically non-existent.
At this point, we’ve filed a complaint with the EU Consumer Centre in Denmark and are looking at small claims options too.
Has anyone had success escalating something like this? Should we push Wizz Air harder, go to small claims court, or try a chargeback? Any advice appreciated.

i doubt you can take out insurance cover with a card in your name, and then expect them to cover someone else’s stuff, even if it is your partner.
in any case, the Montreal Convention sets out your rights.

Notice: Are you asking about compensation, reimbursements, or refunds for delays and cancellations?
You must follow Rule 2 and include the cities, airports, flight numbers, airlines, and dates of travel.
If your flight originated from the EU (any carrier) or your destination was within the EU (with an EU carrier), read into EC261 Air Passenger Rights. Non-EU to Non-EU itineraries, even if operated by an EU carrier, is not eligible for EC261 per Case C-451/20 "Airhelp vs Austrian Airlines". In the case of connecting flights covered by a single reservation, if at least one of the connecting flights was operated by an EU carrier, the connecting flights as a whole should be perceived as operated by an EU air carrier - see Case C367/20 - may entitle you to compensation even if the non-EU carrier (code-shared with the EU carrier) flying to the EU causes the overall delay in arrival if the reservation is made with the EU carrier.
If your flight originated in the UK (any carrier) or your destination was within the UK (with a UK or EU carrier), or within the EU (on a UK carrier), read into UK261 by the UK CAA. Note: this includes connecting flights from a non-UK origin to non-UK destination if flown on a UK carrier (British Airways or Virgin Atlantic). For example JFK-LHR-DEL is eligible for UK261 coverage. Source #1 #2
Turkey also has a similar passenger protections found here
Canada also has a passenger protection known as APPR found here
If you were flying within the US or on a US carrier - you are not entitled to any compensation except under the above schemes or if you were involuntarily denied boarding (IDB). Any questions about compensation within the US or on a US carrier will be removed unless it qualifies for EC261, UK261, or APPR. You are possibly provided duty of care including hotels, meals, and transportation based on the DOT dashboard.

All travel insurance I have ever purchased is extremely specific about exactly what they cover, conditions, limitations, etc..
You might want to reread the limitations of your policy.
Don't know if sending them proof of your partnership will make a difference or not.

Forgot to add - the snowboard never left Copenhagen and we got it back few days after the return.

I'd read carefully read over the exact terms of your Revolut policy to make sure what they told you is what it says. See if you can find any provision at all that would cover your rentals and call them back with that.
With Wizz air you said they didn't offer to refund the luggage. Did you ask them to refund it? It might be a situation where they'll refund it but you have to ask directly.
The policy for not covering rentals is the same in any airline I can think of. They'll only cover hygiene products and change of clothes and that's it. The absolute basics. And then a set amount if they actually lost the baggage which doesn't seem to be the case for you. You won't be able to push Wizz Air there, but you should be able to get the baggage they didn't deliver refunded.
