Thanks for the details write-up! This is much more elaborate and a much better explanation than what we have (Guide to airfare search engines, booking #2).

I will find a place to include this post in the sidebar, either the guide to airports and flying or guide to airfares.

If you are booked on a single reservation, the airline will handle things. If you book two separate tickets, you're on your own.

American will rebook you for free if you are late arriving on a oneworld flight.

I have definitely used that benefit before.
