Question Planning first backpack camping trip

Putting together the plan for my first solo back trip. Planning 2 nights 3 days and 15-20 miles. I’ve been looking at the Benton Mackaye trail starting at three forks.

I’ve found conflicting information on permits and allowed dispersed camping curious on others experiences/ changes to my plan

Thank yall!

Which direction on the BMT from Three Forks? I was just through there last weekend (Amicalola to Dial Rd, 42-ish miles over 3 days). You should be able to camp anywhere on the BMT in that area but I do highly recommend staying at an established spot. The FarOut app has the entire BMT available with locations for campsites and water spots. As of last weekend almost everything was flowing and thanks to the storm that should be good for a while.

For the BMT ... no permits are required but I'd recommend getting FarOut to see campsite locations, water sources, and elevation profile/map.

For another option - I'd recommend the Coosa Backcountry Trail from Vogel State Park. I just did a 2 night 3 day loop there and it was absolutely beautiful (other than being fogged in at Blood Mountain). But it was a great loop with some fantastic campsite options. I did vlog the trail ... so hopefully it's helpful. https://youtu.be/eDTVqb2lNYA (this is a day 1).

For any trail in Georgia that doesn’t start in a state park, you don’t need a permit. For example, if you hike the Coosa Backcountry trail out of Vogel, you fill out the permit card at the trailhead. If you hike a loop around the Three Forks area such as on the BMT, there is no permit to fill out.

When it comes to camping on the trail, if you don’t see a yellow “no camping” sign, camping is allowed. Simply follow leave no trace principles and camp in previously camped in spots. In truth, there are few good campsite spots on trails in Georgia that haven’t previously been camped on.

A favorite loop from Three Forks takes you south to Springer on either side of the AT or the BMT then back on the other. A little shorter than 15 miles, but a nice loop.
