I believe that if something is funny enough it can cancel out potential racism.

I just don't get what THIS is, or why it should be celebrated.

Edit: yeah if any one of the people down voting wanna explain it to me I'm all ears

66

u/Serious_Photo_9602 3d ago

What racism are you seeing? They are cosplaying as sheep

12

u/Olieskio 2d ago

I thought they got tarred and feathered

-62

u/Niguelito 3d ago

Naw.

These dudes wanted to go out and do blackface and using the whole "haha, get it were dressed up as sheep. TOTALLY not blackface at all, haha get it?"

It's bullshit. Why is this slop on this subreddit? This is 3rd grade racism with an extremely weak foil.

31

u/Difficult-Court9522 3d ago

And what is the racist undertone?

-51

u/Niguelito 3d ago

That they wanted to go out and do blackface.

13

u/Clicky27 3d ago

Tell me what is inherently wrong with painting your face black?

1

u/masterteacher2 19h ago

Well damn, the fact you got so many up votes on this comment. This was one of my favorite subs too😔

-16

u/SlobsyourUncle 2d ago

Wow. Glad you way out from under that rock. Must have been under there awhile. Quick update- Strom Thurman is no longer a senator.

30

u/Difficult-Court9522 3d ago

That’s not a racist undertone, there is no harm intended by being a sheep.

15

u/WheredMyPiggyGo 3d ago

A few years ago a chain of shops near me got called racist for having a pack of chocolate ducks for the story ugly ducklings and the milk chocolate duck was called the ugly one.

Just like the story, the black duck is called the ugly duckling, so people kicked off about a chocolate duck based on a fairy tale.

Some people don't think they have had a cheerful day unless they have labelled something racist, it's like their cereal and milk.

-13

u/Niguelito 3d ago

Where does your neck end and your head begin?

1

u/Brave-Town6273 2d ago

Do you know the guys then

1

u/TheManAcrossTheHall 1d ago

That's a massive assumption. There's no reason think blackface was the intention here. No reason to think they just wanted an excuse to be racist.

It's a fucking sheep costume, mate. Get a grip.

29

u/420_is_Adolfs_bday 3d ago

People who cry racism all the time are the worst...

Racism will never stop if you keep bringing it up for ridiculous reasons.

11

u/Kaanpaii 3d ago

They are also the most racist.

-15

u/LordZarbon 3d ago edited 2d ago

Let's think for a second. How often do grownups cosplay sheep? Now what percentage of people cosplay sheep while painting their face black? Now you want me to believe these people skipped a more traditional sheep cosplay for one with a black painted face & chose to do so with no thought or relation to blackface.I find that hard to believe. What's more believable is that the whole cosplay was planned around a single joke. The joke being that they'll do blackface with the plausible deniability of a normal Halloween costume. Now whether you think the joke itself is unacceptable or not is irrelevant to the fact that racism is clearly the joke. It doesn't make sense to deny that.

https://www.tiktok.com/@theheobistro?_t=ZT-8vEjJPzRkQI&_r=1

Here is the original. It's from a Vietnamese bar. I don't speak Vietnamese nor know the current culture someone that speaks Vietnamese hmu and lmk the context. If I was wrong I'll amend everything I said and own it.

7

u/420_is_Adolfs_bday 3d ago

They're the sheep from the popular cartoon Wallace and Gromit....

How would I possibly know that without blackface lmaoo

-10

u/LordZarbon 3d ago edited 2d ago

Ah yes, they completely made that decision with no thought that it could be interpreted as blackface? Again, you are acting like they made this decision without not a single person going "hey this could look sketch."

Pending.

12

u/420_is_Adolfs_bday 3d ago

They probably don't care because people who get offended by silly stuff like this need to get a life.

Most people see it for what it is. A Shaun the sheep costume and a bunch of lads having fun.

That's the point.

-8

u/LordZarbon 3d ago edited 2d ago

So you're honestly telling me you don't think that the cosplay appearing like blackface was part of the joke at all? If so, it'd seem like you're purposefully trying to be obtuse about this to prove or point to some other broad societal point. I truly dont understand the pushback on this, considering I'm not even making a moral judgment, just that it's obviously a part of the joke.

I was probably wrong. Found the original video which is from Vietnam. Waiting for a translation.

7

u/Terrestrial_Conquest 2d ago

The only one seeing it as part of the joke here is you. Then you made up an imaginary scenario where they knew about that and purposely intended to disguise their "blackface" as sheep costumes. And somehow that's supposed to be the conclusion we all come to? Other than seeing it as it is?

The only thing we know is that there are people in sheep outfits, with black face paint on, that apparently isn't going to come off very easily. Assuming anything other than that is stretching the imagination and assuming negative intent.

2

u/LordZarbon 2d ago

You're right. I see now that I made some pretty big assumption here. Most of which stemming from ethnocentrism. I'll own that mistake and keep that in mind for next time.

7

u/lgnc 3d ago

No one gives a damn about blackface or whatever outside of the US. It's a very very small portion of people that care about this stuff...

2

u/LordZarbon 2d ago

Nvm, it's possible I was wrong and I updated my comments to reflect that. I'm waiting for further information bc I could've jumped the gun.

-1

u/LordZarbon 2d ago edited 2d ago

No one saying you should care about it. I'm not making any moral judgements. I'm simply stating that the joke is obviously accidental blackface shock value. I literally walk through the joke in another comment.

Pending.

9

u/tiggertom66 3d ago

Black face doesn’t have the same historical significance outside the US

11

u/tiggertom66 3d ago

If you’re not pretending to be a black person, it’s definitionally not black face.

People dress up for Halloween all the time. You’re choosing to view this as racist despite the fact that there is no mention of race whatsoever.

-3

u/LordZarbon 3d ago edited 2d ago

You're choosing to view this as racist despite the fact that there is no mention of race whatsoever. Bad reasoning here. Something doesn't have to mention race for it to deal with race. That's a ridiculous thing to assert and I'm sure you don't even agree with this. My point is that the joke is blackface here. The camera to the arm showing the paint not being able to come off easy then panning to it being on their face is clearly for shock value... What is invoking the shock? White people with black paint covering their face... Which also looks like blackface which is socially a no no. It's not a hard sequence to follow.

Check og comment.

8

u/tiggertom66 3d ago

I’ve seen this exact kind of video done with all sorts of colors. First one I saw was a guy with blue paint to look like papa Smurf, or another guy painted orange to look like an oompaloompa.

You might read this as a blackface reference because it’s culturally and historically significant in the US, but it doesn’t have nearly the same significance outside the US.

And you could argue that the popularity of the video is because it makes people think of blackface. But there is no indication that these guys were “looking for an excuse excuse to wear blackface”

If you’re not pretending to be a black person it’s not black face.

-1

u/LordZarbon 2d ago

I updated my original comment

-4

u/Exo-Suave 3d ago

No point in arguing with them they know what it is

1

u/LordZarbon 2d ago

Actually there is a chance they're correct about this situation, but I'm waiting for further information. The original TikTok is a Vietnamese bar so I'm hoping a Vietnamese person can give context (I'm not going to pretend to understand Vietnamese popular culture).

-11

u/Niguelito 3d ago

I didn't say this was racist tho

11

u/Due-Ad9310 3d ago

Man, that aged badly, what with the comments you have 20 minutes ago screaming racism. TIL Shaun the sheep is likely racist and should, in fact, be canceled. /s

-2

u/Niguelito 3d ago

Comparing these kids to a cartoon ain't it cheif.

And yeh, I changed my mind this shit is cringe.

3

u/Couch_Prime 3d ago edited 3d ago

The reason is u are racist but dont admit to yourself...so u see it everywhere and blame others...u look like the kind of person who would see an black olive and say its racist

1

u/Niguelito 3d ago

Naw these kids just suck.

2

u/Krakshibana 1d ago

I'll explain it then: It's funny. Why it's funny? Idk, but what i do known is that i found it funny therefore im laughing. That's the only thing that matters. If you find it funny then it is. If you don't, then it isn't. I won't stop finding something funny because you americans were a bunch of racist idiots in the early 1900's.

1

u/Niguelito 1d ago

Then you're an npc, I don't know what to tell you.

4

u/ImaginaryRepeat548 3d ago

My Interpretation is that this group has a costume of getting tarred (?) and feathered. It was a punishment in the Wild West, at least according to my knowledge of Lucky Luke comics. It happened frequently to the Daltons.

4

u/CappinCanuck 3d ago

They look like the sheep from Wallace and Gromit

0

u/Zsoltanlikescows- 3d ago

I think your looking for it a little to much

2

u/ImaginaryRepeat548 3d ago

The guy asked for an explanation and I gave my opinion. What more do you want?

-6

u/Zsoltanlikescows- 3d ago

I suppose it just feels unnecessary to me. Race or racist jokes really doesn’t effect me at all, so I just don’t get why people get worked up about them

2

u/ImaginaryRepeat548 3d ago

Congrats I guess? But neither did I make a racist joke nor is tarring and feathering racist.

-5

u/Zsoltanlikescows- 3d ago

I don’t get where this whole racist stuff came from😭 and so what that we have different skin color? We are all humans. ( I am a black man.)

2

u/ImaginaryRepeat548 3d ago

"[...] Race or racist jokes really doesn’t effect me at all, so I just don’t get why people get worked up about them" - you

Are you trolling?

1

u/Hopeful_Part_9427 1d ago

I agree. One person downvoted you and everyone hopped on board because most people are idiots.

-9

u/notmyfirst_throwawa 3d ago

Nope fuck that. Fuck all of you. I'm with this guy. 👆

The joke is racism, but they're treating it like racism is a joke. I'll land this plane with you pal.

4

u/Niguelito 3d ago

Yeah, It's pretty obvious when you think of it for more than a couple of seconds.

They wanted to do blackface with some bullshit plausible deniability by dressing up as sheep as if that's a THING that normal people ever do.

-1

u/notmyfirst_throwawa 3d ago

I think the friends are all black, or at least some of them are. I think that's why they're all ok with it

2

u/Niguelito 3d ago

I honest to god can't tell. It's every square inch of the stuff.

1

u/migu_BOT 1d ago

Blackface basically doesnt exist outside of the us, for example here in brasil during carnaval people paint their faces all sorts of colors INCLUDING BLACK or in teathers and stuff like that. It's really not uncommon.

-10

u/Razer987 2d ago

"Ooga booga shoo! Ooga booga shoo!"

9

The important thing here, is that they dont get near Wales, because if they do...... that might become a " significant emotional event " for some if not all of them lolol.

53

u/BlyssfulOblyvion 3d ago

-grabs a bucket of popcorn and settles in to wait for the influx of people ranting about blackface-

14

u/SamWise050 3d ago

Does is still count? They're sheep right?

32

u/BlyssfulOblyvion 3d ago

it absolutely does not count, because they are absolutely sheep not blackface. but when has logic, facts, or common sense ever stopped people from being offended and raging?

3

u/PantherThing 2d ago

Wouldnt it have just been easier to be the kind of sheep that dont have black faces, of which there are so many, the painting is wholly unnecessary?

3

u/BlyssfulOblyvion 2d ago

Maybe, but for the vast majority, the first thing you think of when thinking "sheep" is white wool, black skin. If I drew an imugi, which is a legless Asian dragon which greatly resembles a serpent, and you had no context such as size or anything, are you now likely to think "Asian dragon", or "snake"?

2

u/PantherThing 2d ago

I guess theyre common, but I just typed "Sheep" into google and 80-90% of page 1 is the white face guys

0

u/BlyssfulOblyvion 2d ago

Okay. Read what I said again

-1

u/PantherThing 2d ago

Okay. so you think the majority of people think of sheep as black faced, with no evidence of this. I say that almost all the most common pics on the net of sheep are white faced, suggesting at least some evidence that these are more common. And then you think you're smugly taking me to school to reread your comment that the "vast majority" (based on no evidence) still think they're black faced.

4

u/Loyalfish789 2d ago

Hey break it apart guys. Those dudes are disguised as sheeps from Shawn the Sheep and those have black skins.

1

u/Torren-Curtis-Comedy 10h ago

It’s a parody of Shaun the sheep a show where the sheep have black faces

-26

u/redditsuckbutt696969 3d ago

You mean like you being offended about other people being offended, even though no one did that?

-11

u/BlyssfulOblyvion 3d ago

Show where I'm offended, nitwit. Mocked them, sure. Have a hefty dose of schadenfreude, absolutely. Offended? Pfffft

4

u/throatgobblerrr 3d ago

Yeah but nobody is raging u just wanted to bring that up to try and make up something that was never there😂

-3

u/BlyssfulOblyvion 3d ago edited 3d ago

Not there YET. Because I'm waiting for it. And if I'm waiting for it, it means it hasn't arrived yet. Waiting for the show, instead of watching the show. That's how time works for humans. It progresses forward. Although instead I'm getting all the trolls and fools wanting to complain about me.... making a prediction about the near future. Good job.

4

u/ZedRollCo 3d ago

Have some common sense and realize they're not trying to do black face. Same with Nà ge. It's a different language for Christ's sake.

You're not from the same culture group

My brain is in the process of recalling this movie. White trans being racist? No, it wouldn’t make sense when reading the comment. Black guys dressed up as white women? Oh wait it is! Idk how they did it but that’s what it is! Yh shi was funny.

-10

u/SlobsyourUncle 2d ago

Literally NOBODY loved that movie. No one even liked it.

0

u/migu_BOT 1d ago

One of my favorite movies 👍

1

u/SlobsyourUncle 1d ago

I bet you don't tell anyone that in person. Because you shouldn't.

2

u/Fester3787 3d ago

Interesting 🤔

2

u/chloexheart 3d ago

I don't believe you can be so negligent. Why didn't they test it before they painted face?

1

u/BoltersnRivets 1d ago

or why didn't they use...y'know...face paint?

it looks like they scribbled a permanent marker over themselves

1

u/SterileJohnson 6h ago

I remember this from the like, 1940 something old McDonald has a farm. I'm an old mfer but I don't see the racism either.

Guys, it's not blackface, blackface is a us thing, the world doesn't revolve around 'murica. Please think before screaming "blackface"

-14

So much for all of their future presidential runs. No one would ever elect someone after they did something that awful… well, wait… 🤔

9

They could be Prime Minister of Canada still.

0

lol. That’s the joke. Well, also Trump is a sexual predator and felon. My down voted post is really making me laugh, though. I guess people thought I was serious? 🤣

Fuck everyone of those racist assholes

2

They're dressing as sheep from a show called "Shaun the Sheep".

Even so, should know exactly what that looks like

2

u/migu_BOT 1d ago

Black face is a us thing, no one else has/cares about it

1

u/OnionRangerDuck 2d ago

Notice the word "should" here. Why and how would they should know the stuff when they're on a different side of Earth and from a completely different culture group?

Show me the evidence that you actively defend any Asian racism then I'll believe you.

u/jackassdistroyer 2d ago

Black face with the boys goes crazy

-6

u/SlobsyourUncle 2d ago

To all the people saying that "they're sheep". Sheep don't have giant lips that are pink. Sheep with black faces don't have white around their eyes (I realize someone is going to go find a pic of one of the few genetic anomalies to try to prove me wrong, but that's just what they are, anomalies). But you know did? Blackface minstrels, mammy dolls, watermelon figurines, and other racist figures.

Ask yourself this, what would be funny about a bunch of grownup dudes dressed as sheep, if you're asserting this is harmless? There's nothing funny about that. The whole obvious point is that they're doing blackface, and they used their small pea brains to try to excuse the behavior by pretending to just be sheep.

Also, notice that the "wool" on their heads is twisted, yet the wool on their body is just cotton balls.

-1

u/OnionRangerDuck 2d ago edited 2d ago

Funny with all that analysis on why they're racist, all the paragraphs going on tantrum picking off details trying to prove they're racist, you conveniently ignored that by doing the white outline on the eye thingy, they inevitably showed that their eyes are small.

Small eye is not worth mentioning, because that's what they should look like? With the amount of thinking you're doing I don't think that's something you just forgot about.

1

u/SlobsyourUncle 2d ago
