Any good guides for Heroes 5.5?

I mean if things are too difficult don't play "not even in high difficulty" play in the lowest possible. I mean you might be doing that but I think that somewhat reveals your mindset. Allow yourself to play noob if you feel like that. Play in low difficulty, turn down the AI aggression, reload after everything.
I'm not too familiar or good with the game myself but my advice is: try to identify what playstyle you like and then try to build towards that. Choose a faction and class that seems interesting to you and then just start playing, learn the class. Think about troop/skill synergies that you think should work. Don't try to recruit each troop each week, pay only for what you need for your playstyle.
Also generally, Income is important, this isn't HoMM3 jebus, the games are long, try to build economy. Also, Mage guild is super effective, even if you don't play spellcasters, it allows you to teleport to your cities and after picking draonblood crystal skills (shown in the skill wheel) you get free units.

I think the beginning of each game is most important.
Usually it is good to always have 7 stacks: One full stack of ranged units 5 stacks each of a single tier1 unit and one damage dealing stack.
Use the single unit stacks as blockers to defend the two important stacks. Also use them to remove retalliation from enemies. But at the same time: Don't be too wasteful with your tier1 units.
Avoid fighting ranged unit stacks. If you absolutely have to, like Gremlins or Skeletons guarding your first Lumber Mill, the first aid tent skill is not bad, since it can ressurrect fallen units.
But Mages, Druids, Succubi and those Sylvan Archers... try to avoid them as good as possible since they not only deal massive damage but also they have such a high initiative.
Sometimes it can be good to only place a single stack of quick units. For example against Zombies. You can outrun them the whole fight while your hero slowly but surely will win the fight.
Also get Capitol as quickly as possible. Try to never skip building something. Its better to get Capitol early than to always recruit every unit.
At last I can say that some heroes are easier to play than others. The ballista heroes who shoot fireballs with their ballistas are insane at the beginning of the game. Martial Arts heroes also give you a good start into the game. They tend to be weaker later on, but their beginning advantage often helps a lot.

Thanks this is really helpful! I'll give up on this match and start the next one with these in mind. How many heroes should I have? I usually have a main and an extra to carry reinforcements every week.

In 5.5 I recommend 3 on first week. You have your main, then you hire the hero that is from you faction for troops and governor exp and then the third is the pickup/scout guy (also if you have free exp shrines and such you can get some useful skills like the dragonblood stuff for them).
Then each week case by case basis hire heroes from your faction for more troops/extra governors or otherwise strong heroes for taking out the easier stuff so you don't solely rely on your main.
The extra heroes are expensive but scouting and saving movement points for your main are invaluable.

Thanks! So should I make the second hero the governor, not my main? I guess that makes sense since my main will be far away from the city most of the time (not exactly sure how it works tho).

Yes. The movement restriction is too much for the main on most is not all maps. Also your main is getting EXP anyways, the governor EXP doesn't move the needle all too much compared to secondary hero who could gain a few core skills that way before setting off as well and recycling a new governor in.

You ALWAYS start the first day by getting a second hero. That hero then gives all their troops to your first hero (except for one tier1 unit obviously). Sometimes the second hero comes with Ammo Kart, Tent or Ballista which they can gibe to your main hero too.
Your first hero does all the battles, while your second hero picks up all the stuff and gain control of all mines. Don't waste movement points with your main!
You second hero also swings back and forth between your town and your main hero to bring troops. Depending on the map you will have more heroes to explore or do hero chaining for even better troop trainfair.
However: Keep in mind that every hero costs more and more money. And getting a third hero too early might prevent early Capitol.

I have quite a bit of experience in the game, but I get crushed by aggressive AI in this game (5.5) very often 😢 There are some very unfair mechanics in the game, like the AI being able to deploy massive armies to every single mine they own. Maybe some pro game can educate me/us about how to properly play the game 😅
Regarding your side question: I'd say you're f'ed. The enemy will swarm you with dragons.
