Sorry to spoil this, but they look more like bottles to me. Is this an American thing?

Ehh I think more like a semi-regional thing or just personal preference. I (NE USA) would also call those bottles. I typically use "jug" for a larger container with a handle... But I don't think that's a rule. We get larger glass containers of milk from a local dairy and my wife calls them jugs even though there's no handle.
Here's a fun American fact. In some states we have "jug handles" at roadway intersections. These are basically small exits off the road that curve you away from the road and then back around towards it so you end up perpendicular to your original direction of travel. Usually find them on busier local highways. The idea being it allows better traffic flow by not allowing cars to clog up traffic trying to take a left turn across a busy road. The name comes from the tradition of NJ drivers who would carry ceramic jugs by the handle and hurl them at drivers who attempted a dangerous left turn. Or maybe it was the shape or something. I guess we'll never know.

When racing events use bracelets for admission, camping, or whatever I stuff them into one of the milk jugs
