Amazing. Dolphins are one of the most intelligent animals in the world. Theyā€™re just as interested in us as we are them.

204

u/mazamundi Jan 05 '25

they are very interested in us. A bit too much, specially male dolphins

47

u/Yoribell Jan 05 '25

wait till you learn about... A generous half of the mammals and also a good part of the other things

35

u/mazamundi Jan 05 '25

Are you implying at least half the mammals in earth want to rape humans? What kind of mammals are you dealing with and where? Just so I know where I am not visiting next holiday

7

u/HookedOnPhonixDog Jan 05 '25

Are you implying at least half the mammals in earth want to rape humans?

Are you implying that dolphins have a general desire to rape humans?

44

u/mazamundi Jan 05 '25

Dolphins have a particular sexual life, which involves dead fish and unwilling females among other things.

How much of this extends to actual humans is beyond my knowledge, but yes I was implying that. It is, mind you, a joke with a dash of truth in it.

3

u/Slungus_Bunny Jan 07 '25

I have the dolphin copypasta ready if you would like that instead.

1

u/Zyrc0n Jan 10 '25

Dolphinsā€™ sexual life often includes homosexual relationships. As for the ā€œunwilling femalesā€ partā€¦ a lot of animals have unwilling females. Specifically mammals. Dogs, cats, manatees, most pinnipeds (particularly the colonial otariidae family), primates, and artiodactyls in general have similar mating practices to dolphins. The dead fish thing is a myth that started from a river dolphin (not a true dolphins btw, despite the name) in captivity that was abused, neglected, and overall stressed out. What happened in captivity to that animal should not be classified as normal behavior.

And no, dolphins donā€™t really have a sexual attraction to humans. Much like dogs, they will show sexual curiosity (ex: a dog humping your leg), but penetrative rape has never happened before

3

u/Yoribell Jan 05 '25

just doing it on other species, the target have to be weaker and not much can hope to overpower humans

189

u/Imaginary_Brain8209 Jan 05 '25

True that, sucks that we keep the in captivity though rip

57

u/DragonfruitFew5542 Jan 05 '25 edited Jan 05 '25

I generally agree, although there are some ethical rescues that have sea animals that are injured or orphaned. The aim is usually to return them to the wild, although that's not always possible.

Not saying that's the case here, but I'd like to believe.

Some zoos are also very devoted to research and repopulation; I was impressed when I visited the San Diego Zoo/Animal Park and they talked about their conservation efforts, like with the white rhino since natural repopulation is no longer possible. I recall them mentioning several breeds of animals they've effectively saved from extinction through their breeding program, and returning animals to the wild, which is cool. The Smithsonian Zoo in DC is also great. But I know they're the exception, not the rule.

7

u/throwautism52 Jan 05 '25

San Diego is wonderful. They really care about animal welfare. That's why they don't keep dolphins...

1

u/Luci-Noir Jan 05 '25

Do you have a source that says thatā€™s the actual reason or just pulling things out of your ass?

1

u/dilroopgill Jan 05 '25

if animal man fks with the san diego zoo its probably fine

Was waiting for this comment - sure, it does suck. Thereā€™s always context to consider and we donā€™t know this little chaps story. Itā€™s easy to play the card, but we keep humans in captivity too with zero fucks given, and we canā€™t do anything about it. Itā€™s best to just enjoy this precious moment and appreciate the connection and how happy they both are.

26

u/redgeck0 Jan 05 '25

How do human prisons justify locking up dolphins, unless when you said "we don't know the little chaps story" you meant that this dolphin is a criminal I don't think those things are equal

2

u/Comfortable_Pea8634 Jan 05 '25 edited Jan 06 '25

Open your mind to the possibilities of rehabilitation, or anything else, really. I donā€™t get to control what triggers you. Yes - zoos are awful. My keeping humans in captivity is a metaphor, and I didnā€™t think ā€œjailā€ when typing it.

ā€žPlease refrain from reminding me how unethical it is to imprison animals for my personal entertainment purposes. I acknowledge that itā€˜s wrong and that there is historical precedent to proof it, but I value my mental health built upon infantile fantasies over the physical and mental wellbeing of the animals I like to see enslaved.ā€œ - u/Comfortable_Pea8634, 2025.

I feel sorry for an animal so intelligent being trapped in a cage like this all its life and having to break up the monotony by watching humans.

8

u/certifedcupcake Jan 05 '25

Can only hope itā€™s a rescue/rehab facility. If someone knows itā€™s just a zoo donā€™t tell me.

We all know they are second most intelligent species on Earth, with us humans being third, obviously. Keep giving them fish.

6

u/Lyorek Jan 05 '25

Mice being the first of course

11

u/Terrible-Sea2793 Jan 05 '25

They are amazing creatures. I love their character and the way they interact with people. They are very kind.

14

u/I_aim_to_sneeze Jan 05 '25

I meanā€¦ theyā€™re pretty rape-y and literally kill fish just to use them for masturbation too. Their personalities probably range like ours do. https://www.telegraph.co.uk/news/earth/wildlife/9172937/Dolphins-resort-to-rape.html

1

u/Zyrc0n Jan 10 '25

All animals are rape-y by your logic. The fish thing is a myth that started because of a river dolphin (aka a boto, not a real dolphin despite the name) in captivity. The boto this happened with was one of 100 River dolphins imported to America for aquariums. Botos DO NOT fair well in captivity. In fact, the botos imported were heavily neglected and abused. Many died of sleep deprivation due to improper water conditions. The few botos that survived ended up being in high stress environments, were oddly aggressive towards trainers and fellow botos, and ended up acting irrationally and violently, unlike they would in the wild. One of these behaviors was using a decapitated fish for sexual relief. Behaviors such as these, or any aggressive behaviors seen in those captive botos, were results of stress and abuse

3

So are chimpsā€¦ and humans. But all violent, unpredictable, psycho bastards!!!

3

u/Comfortable_Pea8634 Jan 05 '25

lol sounds like youā€™re describing a Koala. Take a look at their brains - theyā€™re smooth! Itā€™s creepy and likely why theyā€™re unpredictable, psycho bastards.

2

u/Illustrious_Can7469 Jan 05 '25

One of those fins would make a better president than tRump or Muskmellon

1

u/getfukdup Jan 05 '25

they could be the most intelligent and we wouldn't know, because there is no rule intelligence has to be used in any particular way.

3

u/kurai-samurai Jan 05 '25

They spend their life eating, fucking and playing.Ā  I don't think there's any question.Ā

1

u/Comfortable_Pea8634 Jan 05 '25

lol thereā€™s complexities to their behaviour, and I would think the high cognitive ability and problem solving skills would place them, and anything higher on the ā€œintelligentā€ scale. Thereā€™s a bell curve for intelligence, and it has a complex criteria. When you use the same criteria for anything else, it gives you a pretty good fucking idea.

1

u/Eastern-Reindeer6838 Jan 11 '25

That's why we give them stimulating environments like this. Just love.

1

u/Avenging-Sky Jan 05 '25

Theyā€™d prefer to be out free in their own home in the ocean with their own kind

1

u/Comfortable_Pea8634 Jan 05 '25

But did anyone ask the dolphin? By default, our emotions want them to be. What if theyā€™re happy and have all their needs met here? For the record, I donā€™t support animals in captivity for human enjoyment, but sometimes thereā€™s ā€œfor the bestā€ context, and sadly, we donā€™t have that information in this case.

1

u/Avenging-Sky Jan 05 '25

No its never the case. Or are you the farm bot that trolls? Sounds like it

1

u/catholicsluts Jan 05 '25

Proper zoos and aquariums are responsible for massive efforts toward conservation and preservation. Of course, we wouldn't need those efforts if it weren't for humans, but here we are.

Seaworld is nowhere on the same level as an accredited zoo. You clearly have no idea about the conservation/preservation/rehabilitation efforts proper zoos spearhead.

I feel sad looking at that shithouse place for a dolphins!

115

u/[deleted] Jan 05 '25

That's the Indianapolis Zoo. It's a non-profit zoo that does a lot of conservation efforts.

Now, I don't know if this is the case for all the dolphins there, but I do know some are rescue dolphins. Meaning, they were saved at a young age by humans and if let back into the wild, would die.

73

u/Blondisgift Jan 05 '25

Me too! I was thinking itā€™s depressing how such an intelligent animal has apparently no mental stimulation besides the people staring at him. The cartwheel is probably the most interesting thing heā€™s seen in weeks. šŸ„ŗ

44

u/-Badger3- Jan 05 '25

Obviously dolphins shouldnā€™t be in captivity, but that being said, the dolphins at the National Aquarium get plenty of stimulation and are probably among the best treated captive dolphins in the world.

u/Starumlunsta Jan 05 '25 edited Jan 05 '25

Looks like the Indianapolis Zoo's underwater dolphin dome. It's not even a very big "pool" and the dome takes an obscenely large amount of space in it. It's one of the things I hate the most about this zoo, their small enclosures, not that you could ever give cetaceans enough space but this is just sad. Even worse, they still run dolphin shows and they blare extremely loud music the entire time.

20

u/subfin Jan 05 '25

This is only the front part of the pool, you can see the gates in the back which lead to additional space and where the dolphins spend most of their time. They are only sometimes on display.

2

u/Starumlunsta Jan 05 '25 edited Jan 05 '25

Yes, but those round pools appear even smaller than the main one when viewed from the top bleachers. Of course, not all of it is visible so there might be even bigger areas for them, but even if they were big enough to occupy the entire building the space would never be sufficient for these creatures. We really need to move past keeping cetaceans in conditions like this. And while they are never forced to participate in the shows, the music can be almost deafening. I decided to check out the dome during a show once to see it from below, and the ground floor with the music. I can only imagine how that feels in the water to an animal so reliant on sound.

48

u/hzcki Jan 05 '25

would've been more interested to see if that was a gorilla

Sucks to live your list in a prison, especially when your only crime is being a beautiful creature.

19

u/Fifth_Wall0666 Jan 05 '25

Step 1: underwater cartwheels.

Step 2: overthrow puny cartwheeling humans.

2

u/SolomonBlack Jan 05 '25

"For instance, on the planet Earth, man had always assumed that he was more intelligent than dolphins because he had achieved so muchā€”the wheel, New York, wars and so onā€”whilst all the dolphins had ever done was muck about in the water having a good time. But conversely, the dolphins had always believed that they were far more intelligent than manā€”for precisely the same reasons."

32

u/holoholo-808 Jan 05 '25

Made me definitely not smile. To see a dolphin in a prison let the dolphin free and have fun with them in the open sea that would be great.

-4

u/Antique-Special8024 Jan 05 '25

Made me definitely not smile. To see a dolphin in a prison let the dolphin free and have fun with them in the open sea that would be great.

"fun"

Alliances are an essential part of the mating strategies of the males. First-order partnerships will single out a female, rush at her, and then herd her away to have sex, which is coercive. During this aggressive corralling, the female repeatedly tries to escape, and does so in about one of every four attempts. The males restrict her attempts at freedom by charging in, and bashing her with their tails, head-butting, biting, and body-slamming her into submission.

Most dolphins belong in prison :p
