As a therapist at a substance use rehab, we have a strict no touching (including hugging) policy. But sometimes, I sense that’s what the person needs and I offer it anyway. It’s not often, but when it’s needed, it’s needed.

As a receiver of a hug like this in a rehab facility during the darkest time of my life…thank you. It’s people like you that made me want to live again

I’ve had a couple people (teachers, bosses, etc) who “shouldn’t” hug me give me awkward side hugs instead and trust me, I’ve always needed and valued them. Sometimes it’s needed!!! As long as it’s consensual, you’re doing the lord’s work 💓

No hugging...? Because it could lead to sex?

Yes, that could be a reason. A few different reasons: People are in a vulnerable state and might misinterpret the hug and develop transference. They may not like being touched due to trauma, culture or personal preference. They may use the hug as ammo to throw back in your face later. They may depend on other people’s touch and not utilize self soothing techniques on their own.
