“Saving” might be the wrong word. But wanting to be with your loved ones, in the instance of a life and death situation, says a lot for his love of his family and how far he’d go to be with them.

The headline remains valid as it captures his primary intent.

How exactly did he save them?

TL;DR: He sought his family, not saved. “Korean man leaps across Bangkok condo’s damaged sky bridge during quake to seek family” (the straits time). “He was exercising on the 52nd floor of one of three blocks at the Park Origin condominium in Thonglor when the earthquake struck,” “His wife and their daughter were in their residence on the 30th floor in a neighbouring block. All three buildings in the condominium complex are connected by sky bridges, which appeared to have been damaged by the quake with debris falling to the ground,” “As the buildings swayed visibly, Mr Kwon leaped across a falling sky bridge to get to the other building to look for his family,” “After he realised that they had already evacuated the block, he walked down more than 40 floors to reunite with his wife and one-year-old daughter outside the building.”

I'd love to see his fitness tracker for that day.

"You have reached your cardio goal!"

How do you evacuate a 1 year old 40 floors in the time of an earthquake? An earthquake last like a minute?

25

u/Kasstato 15h ago

Well they probably already started evacuating by the time he'd made it to where they were, mayhe they werent outside yet but made it outside before him

An earthquake may only last a minute, but the damage it leaves will cause a butterfly effect of damages that lasts much longer.

As an example, If a car crashes into a bridge, its over in a second, but sometime later the bridge may collapse due to damage caused by the car crash.

He risked his own life to see his family, who he would not be able to "save" anyway as there is no way to save someone during an earthquake apart from getting yourself to safety.

Instead he got himself in even more danger, which means he's lucky that he didn't put his family through having to mourn his death.

There is no way I would want my family to risk their life to get me into safety knowing that there is not much they can do anyway.

These are valid comments but people think differently in stressful situations. During an earthquake his first instinct was to be with his wife and child. I'm sure many people would do the same and not think about the potential consequences you mentioned.

I almost ran through a plate glass window during an earthquake because my kid was at a summer camp by my work and I was getting to him hell or high water. I grew up in CA, earthquakes are not scary, but my brain shut off and my instincts were to GET THERE.

Luckily I was in an office with others who were like “use the door” but I also get this guys instinct to do that. Not smart nor advisable but very very human.

I read somewhere that the part of brain which is responsible for smart and rational thinking shuts off to some degree in a situation that is perceived as a threat, and another part called amygdala takes over which decides whether to flight, flight or freeze, and this part makes its decisions from conscious and unconscious memories of the past, along with the memories of your ancestors you inherited in your DNA.

Ooh I LOVE that!! Memories of your ancestors through DNA and the instincts therein.

Best way to u derstand your brain is the further from the brain stem it is, the longer it takes to impact your thought process.

What we call “will power” is actually just centers of the brain dedicated to inhibiting the activation of certain brain sections long enough for things like our pre-frontal cortex to be able to weigh in.

u/AELatro 12h ago

I don’t know this story, what did he save them from?

1

u/unclepaprika 11h ago

Wait, i think i saw a video of that. No idea where to find it tho..

1

u/shadesof3 11h ago

What a crazy thing to have seen. Was like a movie scene. If I remember correctly his family was already evacuated from the building he jumped to but he had no clue at the time. Regardless, dude gave his all to get to his family.

-6

u/Prudent_Block1669 17h ago

Dude has a "get out of the doghouse for free" card for life now.

-2

u/xyepxnopex 6h ago

For almost killing himself for no possible benefit?

-3

u/KnightArtorias1 4h ago

Sounds like a bit of an idiot to be honest. He didn't save them, he changed nothing. All he did was risk his own life unnecessarily and risk putting his family through the pain of his death
