He risked his own life to see his family, who he would not be able to "save" anyway as there is no way to save someone during an earthquake apart from getting yourself to safety.

Instead he got himself in even more danger, which means he's lucky that he didn't put his family through having to mourn his death.

There is no way I would want my family to risk their life to get me into safety knowing that there is not much they can do anyway.

These are valid comments but people think differently in stressful situations. During an earthquake his first instinct was to be with his wife and child. I'm sure many people would do the same and not think about the potential consequences you mentioned.

I almost ran through a plate glass window during an earthquake because my kid was at a summer camp by my work and I was getting to him hell or high water. I grew up in CA, earthquakes are not scary, but my brain shut off and my instincts were to GET THERE.

Luckily I was in an office with others who were like “use the door” but I also get this guys instinct to do that. Not smart nor advisable but very very human.

I read somewhere that the part of brain which is responsible for smart and rational thinking shuts off to some degree in a situation that is perceived as a threat, and another part called amygdala takes over which decides whether to flight, flight or freeze, and this part makes its decisions from conscious and unconscious memories of the past, along with the memories of your ancestors you inherited in your DNA.

Ooh I LOVE that!! Memories of your ancestors through DNA and the instincts therein.

Best way to u derstand your brain is the further from the brain stem it is, the longer it takes to impact your thought process.

What we call “will power” is actually just centers of the brain dedicated to inhibiting the activation of certain brain sections long enough for things like our pre-frontal cortex to be able to weigh in.
