I want to get my wife “good” makeup for Christmas but don’t know where to start.

My wife and I are getting each other 1 gift this Christmas. She had mentioned a few months ago that she wished she had “actual good makeup”, and I want to give her that for Christmas, I just don’t know where to start/don’t want to get scammed by advertising for mediocre products.

Would anyone be able to give me some leads to go off of? Thank you so much

Most people (including a lot of influencers) don't understand what a ph-changing makeup product works

I've seen so many influencers rag on ph-changing products (like lip glosses) saying that they're a scam because they change color based on your skin's ph to give you a unique color, but everyone has the same ph and the only reason they look different is because of color theory. Most brands aren't saying that they're give you a customed color based on your skin's ph, they're saying that they change color when they interact with your skin's ph. That's how blue lip glosses stay blue in the tube when they turn pink on your lips, because the ph of the tube and your lips are different. It's crazy how many people have sprouted the same misinformation.

Neutral toned baby pink blush/ makeup in general

Upvotes

I am very very very pale. I thought I had a cool undertone but turns out it’s actually neutral. Is there any neutral baby pink blushes that would look baby pink on my skin? Not too dusty Bluey but not too coral orangey? Thank you for the help! Plus if you use any good neutral makeup you like, recommendations are welcome!!!

How to just throw away old/expired makeup (even if I spent a lot on it)!

As many of you also did, I went though and INSANE period of time where I purchased an obscene amount of makeup. Now I have a ton of makeup that I have not used for years, and it is 100% expired, and I know I will not use it, but I can't bring myself to throw it away. It is less difficult for small things like eyeliner, but I have some $50-$100 products that need to go, and that's where I struggle. Any advice?

This is the only space that I have issues with holding onto useless/expired things. Help!

Edit: wow everyone thank you for all the good advice! A lot of you are bringing up that powder doesn’t really go bad, which I agree with, however I have literally had some of these products for 10+ years!

Also! The reason I am doing this as well is because I recently had a detached retina and a pretty invasive and severe surgery, so I am being extra extra cautious with older powders on my eyes, even if normally they should be fine. I am concerned about any risk of infection or conjunctivitis because it could really screw up the permanent buckle around my eye.

Again! Thanks so much for the tips and taking the time to write everything out!

trendy ways to call attention to eyes/make them look bigger

my eyes are my best feature. the 2020 winged liner craze was great for me.

but i feel like nowadays it looks outdated. i know i can still wear it but excessive liquid liner just looks off to me now.

does anyone have more current ways to emphasize my eyes they can suggest?

[Makeup Help] Has anyone ever used Tarte Fake Awake as a pinpoint concealer?

Upvotes

Just a thought after a friend told me they got the Lisa Eldrige pinpoint concealer and how expensive it is. If I'm a white ghost who matches that color, what's really the difference in formula here and do you think it's possible other companies could do this and make pencil eyeliner/concealer combos? I'm looking for a way to pinpoint conceal for a cheaper price.

[Makeup Help] Can warm undertone girlies rock gothic makeup?

Upvotes

I’m someone who is obviously warm undertone so by default gold looks better on me. I’m an autumn warm so colours like sangria, burgundy, black gold combination, look very good on me. But I prefer wearing gothic clothes which is basically a lot of paleness and cold undertone makeup. If anyone else has figured it out please let me know how!

[Makeup Help] Recommendations for Primer

Hi girls, can you recommend a good primer that gives the face a radiant, glowy effect? I don’t wear much makeup, just concealer, so it’s really important to me that my skin looks luminous. Ideally, I’d love recommendations from Sephora. Thanks so much❤️

[Makeup Help] Estée Lauder Double wear VS Dolce & Gabbana Everlast Foundation

Hi everyone, I normally use EL DW but it can crack and go patchy I do have dehydrated skin and I know a full coverage foundation is the worst for my skin type but I need to use a full coverage foundation.

I have just heard about D&C foundation and that it's meant to last without going patchy. I just wondered for those who have used it what is it like in terms of coverage compared to DW? Before I go and splurge on it.

Thank you! 💖

product for expediting eyebrow tint fade??

Upvotes

Moral of the story is that I need to learn to say no. I went to get my brows threaded on Friday and the woman suggested that I tint my brows too, so I said yes. The problem is, it’s way darker than I am comfortable with, and I have graduation photos a week from tomorrow.

I tried baking soda+shampoo and baking soda + dish soap as soon as I got home from the salons, but my brows still look as dark as they were when she dyed them.

I was wondering if anyone knows of a product I can order to try and fade the color of the dye? Maybe like some sort of exfoliating product? Worst case scenario, I will bleach them and then get them matched to my hair professionally but would like to try and fix this asap…

[Makeup Help] HELP!! LipCote peeling and ruins lipstick!!

Upvotes

Hi, my mum had been using LipCote for years and swears by it. I bought it and it makes my lipstick peel and roll off within minutes.

I followed the instructions and everything.

I’m thinking it’s because of the products I’m using or maybe how many products I’m using.

I use a Primark lipliner and then lipstick. After the LipCote completely dries I top it off with lipgloss or Vaseline. But even before the lipgloss it peels. When I add any type of moisture it happens.

It happened when I tired it at home AND at a wedding. So embarrassing :(

Thank you in advance.

How do you add extra *oomph* to your special events makeup?

I’m pretty good at doing my daily makeup (because it’s literally something I do everyday lol), but every time I do my special events makeup to go somewhere special, I always end up getting underwhelmed. Otherwise, I over-correct and do too much, which ends up going into cakey/clownish/overdone territory.

Curious what are some things you all do to add that extra oomph whenever you’re doing makeup for a special occasion and actually make it look extra good and special!

I need some recommendations for NYX beginner friendly eyeliner, thank you! (How to apply eyeliner tips would also be nice)

[Makeup Help] Makeup as a DJ for school discos?

I have an awesome new job where I get to be a DJ for school kids’ discos and dances. What sort of makeup would be minimal but appropriate while I’m up on stage? My dress code requires me to keep makeup ‘at a minimum’ but I plan to challenge that minimum. The lighting situation is what makes me ponder because more often than not it will be dark with flashing coloured lights, and there won’t be any light pointed at me most of the time. I am interested in incorporating rhinestones, face glitter, and maybe graphic eyeliner eventually. I’ve looked at rave makeup but it’s a bit too bold for my beginner skills and for the dress code (I literally got into makeup at the beginning of this year and I’ve yet to have a successful day with tightlining).

I have combo skin but oily oily and hooded eyelids, so I don’t have a lot of canvas to work with regarding eyes.

Extra tips or product recommendations on keeping makeup on through sweat and dancing is welcomed!

Cheers!

[Makeup Help] One type of product to even out skin tone?

I am quite low maintenance right now - 33F, 3 kids 4-7. Most of the time I only wear mascara and lipstick.

Looking for a single cheaper/quick product to wear to even out my skin tone a bit. I'm fairly pale but with rosy cheeks and reddish areas from acne (no longer have it except some in my goatee area prior to my period).

About Face foundation always comes out patchy- advice?

I have a pale olive skin tone so it’s very hard to find foundations- they’re always too warm or too cool etc. For years I was using Purito Cc cream in shade 21 because the formula was excellent, although the shade was a bit off. Finally I discovered the About Face foundation in shade F2 and it is literally a PERFECT color match. My problem is that it always comes out terrible! It’s patchy and refuses to melt into the skin properly no matter how I’ve applied it. I’ve tried primer/no primer, moisturizer, exfoliation, etc. I use a brush to apply because I’ve never had much luck with sponges.

My skin type is combination.

Does anyone use this foundation and have this issue? How do you apply it for best results?
