Question How did my foundation manage to literally change shades?

Post image

This is the Charlotte Tilbury Beautiful Skin Foundation, I was shade matched and after a few months of using it, the shade didn’t match my face, I kept using it despite the fact I looked orange, but when I went to the makeup store to by a new tube, I noticed the shade had changed significantly. These are the exact same shades and I don’t understand why this happened. I understand oxidation on my face but why would it change colors in the tube?

Yes, yes it is…Air can get inside every time it’s used, it’s a clear tube so the light can get through causing oxidation, temperature changes where it’s stored can cause ingredients to oxidize inside the tube, etc.

It also needs to react with oil from the skin.

Not necessarily. Oxidation can happen with just heat and air exposure. Source: chemical engineer

Also chemist. You are incorrect. Air is a good enough oxidizer, does not need anything else.

I mean its literal called oxidation and not lipidation

I think there was a fake chemist among us.

Not true at all. Think you need to go back to your textbooks.

I guess L’Oréal just doesn’t know their stuff at all then:

“The oxidation process is caused by your foundation getting exposed to air. As a result, it causes your foundation to darken to an orange hue. This can happen post-application or while the formula is in the bottle.”

How many months do you consider a few months to be? These foundations have a 12 month shelf life (as seen on the packaging in these photos, the little open tub with 12m), and part of that will be that the formula will oxidise and go darker over time. This can be somewhat avoided by keeping foundation in a dark, cool place, and making sure the lid is always put back on to keep any air out of the product.

However, Charlotte tilbury foundations do this (in my experience with the airbrush flawless foundation as well). Their formulas will just thicken and get darker around that 12 month mark even with proper storage. I've never been able to finish a Charlotte tilbury foundation before it's done this which is why I moved away from it. I can't spend that much for it to barely make it to its marked shelf life

I had no idea that’s what that icon meant. TIL!

Most people don't! Not the clearest way to communicate shelf life

Lmao I’m feeling so silly that I never knew this somehow

I only had the foundation for about 5 months. But thanks for all the information I had no idea about the shelf life

I would word it differently.

"Shelf life" suggests storage (shelf).

But opened jar icon means time from opening.

It takes into consideration how much preservatives were used so that they can keep bacteria (and other stuff entering in normal daily use) from multiplying. Plus formula stability when it comes to oxygen etc, but that's more for separation, rather than natural oxidation discolouration (colour oxidation with fresh product just happens on the skin, rather than in the tube).

Summer shade! 😆

Estée Lauder Futurist Hydra Rescue did this to me. I put it aside for summer months and when I took it out again it had turned orange. For that price I would have expected a little more stabile compound.

this also happened to me with my estée lauder double wear 😑 it wasn't even a year old yet and i always kept it in a makeup bag, used it maybe 7-8 times. it made me really annoyed so even though it looked great on my skin, i won't be buying it again. i think it's because the bottle totally sucks, the hole at the top is way too big so every time it's opened, a bunch of air gets inside.

Its very interesting that these high end brands seem to have a smaller life. If i had paid my hard earned money for a ST foundation I would CERTAINLY expect it to not change shade so drastically over 5 months! Maybe this foundation is also made from 100% pure pearl darlings 😂

Yes same! 1c1 cool bone turned straight up orange in the bottle after only a few months.

They currently took these out of all stores to fix this problem, i saw a tester that turned green ish

I just went to Sephora yesterday to test that foundation because someone said it’s good for dry skin. The saleswoman said Charlotte Tilbury pulled all the light shades in that product off the shelves in their stores. It still seems to be sold online, so I am not sure what is going on. But there might be something wonky about the formulation for the lighter shades that needs to be fixed

Never seen oxidation occur inside a tube before.

I noticed this on my concealer, but the other way — new tube (on top) is darker than the old one. They’re the same shade. Frustrating!

Oohhh if you’re interested in confirming it’s just from the oxidation, you could put some foundation on a piece of glass and leave it for an hour or two. Then we’ll know for sure it’s just the air, (although I suppose it’s possible for the foundation to also interact with degrading plastic compounds in its own packaging.)

5 months? 💀For makeup prices now, we better be vacuum sealing these babies

Identical tube too

Same thing happened to me with my neutral tube. I bought it and noticed half was turning orange and the other half looked normal in the packaging. I didn’t think much of it until reading your post.

I had a concealer do that to me that was still in the packaging the I didn’t use quick enough

I hate buying expensive foundation and it looks amazing inside the store but you walk outside and look like a oompa lumpa

It’a expired hun. When it changes colors like that it’s expired.

Unfortunately, makeup companies continually change products
