This review will be in two parts and a bit long as I am doing a more play by play review as I was trying it out.
As many of you know, I’ve got several Brooklyn Bedding mattresses at home, including a Brooklyn Bedding Standard Hybrid that’s been in my guest room for a few years now. It’s been working just fine, but I’ve been itching to try something new. I recently responded to a question about the Glacier Apex by BIA, and the poster suggested that there was not much information about it. My answer was based on the known built (albeit, lacking specifications on the website) and my familiarity with the company’s reputation for high quality mattresses, much like the Millbrook, which is one of my favorite mattresses, Hemingway, Embrace, Eclipse and others. Though I tend to prefer a firmer mattress, I figured I’d give the Apex a shot in real time, rather than one solely based on design, construction and build, so I could offer a better perspective, as it would be for the guest room where any guests staying over don’t get to firm or soft of a mattress. One thing that I dont know is the densities of the layers and gauges of the springs, which I will ask the company about later. It seemed to check a lot of the boxes for a guest room mattress: not too soft, not overly firm, more of a hotel luxury feel. So, I was hoping it would feel the way they described it.
The mattress arrived in less than a week, and for once, the box was in perfect condition and delivered right to my porch (not dropped at my garage door, which I really can't stand). The mattress was tightly compressed and rolled, but since I was planning to test it in my basement bedroom on the floor, unrolling it was easy. I just held one end and pushed it, and it rolled across the floor, removing the outer plastic wrap. When I cut the compression wrap, it expanded to 14.25” right on the dot, and within about 15 minutes, it was good to go.
One unintended consequence I discovered was when the mattress was expanding, I decided to throw on a pair of shorts and no shirt and out of my daily work dress clothes. The basement was cooler than the rest of the house, and the mattress cover seemed to absorb all of the cold air in the room. When I laid down, it honestly felt like I was on a frozen lake. It was freezing, I had to run back upstairs and get a tee shirt.
I still opine that mattresses don’t cool, air conditioners do, but this fabric does absorb and hold the cold ambient air in the room, at least for a short time while lying on it in a specific area, when you roll to another spot, it is cool again. Remember, this is with no protector or sheets, yet. That will be part 2.
I set up a mirror on the floor, so I could see any compression areas while lying on the mattress. No sophisticated "mattress review site equipment" like thermal photography, weighted balls for measuring bounce, just good old fashioned, this is how it really feels.
Immediately, i noticed when lying on my back, I could actually feel the contouring and support under the arch of my back, which I was not used to with the Plank Luxe (and I love my Plank Luxe). It was a softer than I am used to, but surprisingly comfortable. This goes to show that even the most stubborn of sleepers, like me, can be comfortable on more than one firmness/style mattress. Despite being softer than what I usually prefer, I still felt very supported and secure. I could feel coolness faded after about 15 minutes as my body warmed up the mattress, even with a tee shirt on. Despite that, I did not feel hot or even warm on the mattress. Likely for a couple of reasons, the room was reasonable cool, and since I was not sinking much into the mattress and my body ( even at my weight 220lb, 6') was resting on the top surface.
I was able to move/roll around easily without feeling “stuck” in the mattress. In fact, as I mentioned, it felt like I was lying on top of it, even though my butt sank in just a bit after a while (20 min). The mattress does incorporate about 6.25” of comfort foams. When I lied on the edge of the mattress, the support was excellent, maybe an inch of give. I could still see the taped edges of the euro top below me in the mirror, and they did not compress enough to touch each other, so I knew I was not sinking too much at all.
Initially, I was a little worried about the 6.25” of comfort foam above the spring support, as too much foam can sometimes cause issues with how a mattress will support your body, but not here. The mattress felt solid and supportive and honestly, most people wouldn’t even guess this mattress came in a box. Cosmetically, it looks, feels and acts like a traditional one-sided mattress.
When I switched to my side, the mattress gave nice contouring with no uncomfortable pressure. When I rolled to the other side, I saw a slight body impression in the spot I moved from, but it bounced back quite quickly. There was no noticeable off-gassing smell. I had my wife come down to test it out too. She rolled on and off the mattress while I lied still, and I couldn’t feel any of her movements. Although, she did notice a little of my shifting, especially when I got on and off, but she said if she were asleep, she wouldn’t have been bothered at all (keep in mind the mattress is on the floor and not yet on a frame). You can definitely feel the extra lumbar support comfort layer, plus the way the cover is stitched, you can see the pattern shift in the stitching, so you see on the cover where the extra lumbar support is located on the mattress surface.
For the price, $1,299 for my full and $1,799 for a king, this mattress delivers a solid luxury feel. While there is some stiff price competition out there, their original glacier king, is only $999, which may be one of the best qualities to value plays on the market for under $1K. The Apex version, and the luxury hotel, secure but cushy feel, is quite honestly better than most of the legacy brands I’ve tried. I am not talking about their middle or lower lever lines; I am referring to their Black level and Estate Levels which sell for two to three times more. Since I still prefer a firmer mattress, I’ll update this when I place the mattress on the bedframe in the guest room get a full night’s sleep on it. But after a couple of days testing the Apex, on the floor in my basement, this mattress is pretty impressive. particularly if you like the feel of a high end hotel feel mattress. If you like a plushier, but supportive feel, this mattress is definitely worth considering. They call it medium plush, but to me, the support level feels a bit firmer than a typical medium, though it still has that plush contouring comfort feel to it.
Will update in a week or so!
