Social Walking from Devil’s Punchbowl to Mac: A night full of inside jokes

None of my expeditions turned out the way I anticipated, and this one was no different lol. Having departed earlier compared to the rest of the expeditions, this was the only one that was completed slightly before midnight. What started as a potential flop ended up being an adventure that checked off so many inside jokes and gave us another endurance challenge—no breaks, no water, no food, just non-stop movement.

I switched the destination last minute from the Hamilton Waterfront Trail to Devil’s Punchbowl, and ended up with two new first-years from Reddit yet again on board. Keeping in mind unfavourable night-time bus timings, we decided to bus there and somehow walk back to campus. We departed by bus at 5:38 PM, arriving at Upper Centennial and Green Mountain at 6:49 PM. From there, we had to walk ~2.3km to view the conservation area, reaching it at 7:11 PM. Unfortunately, either we missed the sights or they were just less exciting than I envisioned. I couldn’t jeopardize anyone’s safety, but some chaotic companionship (like the people down by the stream lol) definitely could’ve led to some questionable results.

Looking at the official map, we spotted Bruce Trail and Dofasco Trail, and the gears in my head started turning. But the majority of us agreed to simply head back to campus via Bruce Trail, given we were already situated ~4 hours away. By the time we reached the bottom at 7:40PM, we were kind of clueless about the directions and time, so we decided to simply visit Dundurn Stairs as a way to wrap up the night—the origin of my series of expeditions. We really only ended up viewing the stairs from afar before heading back to campus. I did start questioning myself, though, wondering if I’d let the others down by not opting for a better location or long trail, but it all worked out.

Instead of taking in stunning natural sights or potentially unsafe areas, this journey was more about the context and inside jokes I formed with friends. For example, I posted about spotting cats around Mac during exam season last semester, and this time, not only did I find four cats, but I even got to pet a super friendly orange cat! It came comfortably approached us, brushed against our legs, and then rolled over to reveal its belly! I was already attached, but we didn’t quite know what to do at that moment except keep moving.

Honestly, I’m not sure how to describe this journey. We didn’t quite get the results I/we were hoping for, but we had seamless conversations and interesting discussions throughout. It really supports the saying: “It’s about the journey, not the destination.” We didn’t really have a destination—just visiting Devil's Punchbowl and returning to Mac—and took detours (e.g. Wentworth Stairs) to shape our own path rather than blindly following maps. But I’m glad my series of expeditions with Redditors specifically (possibly?) ended this way, at least for the time-being perhaps.

Question second year: human behaviour or integrated rehabilitation and humanities

Upvotes

Second year applications have opened up and I am confused on what to make my first choice from the two programs. There's not much info on irh but it seems interesting to me especially since I really don't know what I want to do after my bachelors, I just know that I am interested in healthcare and social aspects of it. The same goes for the human behaviour program, i think both are cool because healthcare and humanities/social aspects are integrated in it but I do not know which one to make my first choice.

Was with a group of buddies and walked by in a hurry but I feel bad now as she was very clearly going through it

I didn't want to freak her out by approaching her (as a group of guys and also I don't think my buddies noticed her) but it Really stuck with me - whoever you are, I hope you're doing okay and know you're not alone! I wanted to ask if you were okay and I regret not doing so.

Admissions iBioMed for Med School (Help!)

Hi! Got my offer with Free Choice and need to decide by May. My ultimate goal is med school (but I like math/physics and am ok with doing it for a year). Debating between this and a more traditional life sci program like McGill's.

Is iBioMed going to help or hinder my chances at getting in?

How is the workload (Especially for anyone going into it from IB or an International French Baccalaureate!!) ? I'm used to 40 hrs of class a week + homework, but not sure if I'll die anyways.

Also, was wondering if it's hard to get into the co-op program.

Sorry for bombarding with questions, but the program is so weird!!

Academics Advice for Studying the PSYCH 1XX3 Textbook?

Haven't touched the textbook since the last midterm, what would be the best course of action to properly study from the psych textbook? Usually go into the tests to guess, but I want to ensure that I can pick up the points from the textbook this time. What should I do?

Social THANK YOU FOR PLAYING CATCH YESTERDAY

WHERE WAS YESTERDAY'S CATCH POST? WHAT HAPPENED TO OUR DEAR UPDATES? I HEAR YOUR CRIES. YESTERDAY'S CATCH POST COULD NOT BE FORMED DUE TO MY PROFESSORS CONSPIRING TO DROWN ME IN WORK. IT IS BELATED BUT IT IS HERE.

WHAT BEAUTIFUL WEATHER. A SNOWSTORM FOLLOWED BY RAIN FOLLOWED BY SUMMER SUN, HEAT, AND A POWERFUL BREEZE. EVEN THE BUGS CAME OUT TO CELEBRATE. BUT... IT SEEMS AS THOUGH LESS PEOPLE EMERGED TO PLAY CATCH. I CAN'T THINK OF A REASON WHY - MAYBE YOU ALL APPRECIATE TEMPESTUOUS WEATHER MORE. DON'T WORRY. I SEE YOU AND HEAR YOU. I WILL KEEP THIS IN MIND WHEN ANNOUNCING CATCH SESSIONS NEXT YEAR.

YESTERDAY, THERE WERE SOME FAMILIAR AND SOME NEW FACES. NO MATTER. WE ALL SWEAT TOGETHER IN OUR POOR FASHION CHOICES, SUCH AS WINTER BOOTS, LONG PANTS, AND SWEATERS IN 20 DEGREE WEATHER. AS ALWAYS, THE FRISBEERS PREVAILED DESPITE THE STRONG WINDS. BASEBALLS ARE SUPERIOR BECAUSE THE EARTH'S HEATING ISSUES DON'T CAUSE THEM TO FLY AWAY. YOU WOULDN'T BELIEVE IT, BUT THEIR FRISBEE GOT STUCK IN A TREE. AND A SOCCER BALL. AND A VOLLEYBALL. AND A FOOTBALL. HOW DID THEY STORE SO MANY IN THEIR POCKETS? AT LEAST THE MINI FOOTBALL WAS SPARED. THE TREE, NOT SO MUCH. THEY NEEDED SAVING - WE WERE READY TO RESPOND.

THANK YOU TO THOSE WHO PLAYED CATCH WITH ME THIS SEMESTER. TO THOSE WHO SHOWED THEIR SUPPORT AND EXCITEMENT ABOUT CATCH. I HOPE THIS SPREADS TO AREAS OUTSIDE OF MACDONALDS AND TIMES OUTSIDE OF WHAT I CAN HOST.

CRUSH YOUR EXAMS. CRUSH YOUR CRUSH. CRUSH FRUIT PUNCH. ENJOY YOUR SUMMER. AND MAKE SURE TO LEAVE A TIMESLOT FOR CATCH IN YOUR SCHEDULE NEXT YEAR.

THAT'S ALL FOLKS. SEE YOU NEXT YEAR.

Hey so I see that the move out date is the day after your last exam at 3pm, if you live on res but exams finish on like the 25/26/27th of April. If I stay a day later (for example my last exam is the 16 and I leave the 18th) just to relax and take a a breather would I be fined or caught?

Social We walked down the entirety of Barton Street

Thumbnail

Similar to the Sam Lawrence Park-turned-detoured adventure, my initial intention was to walk to Barton Street and loop around in the opposite direction back to Mac. But what did we do instead? That’s right, we walked down the entirety of Barton Street, but safely! Two other first-years, u/PrestigiousPilot8343 and u/MarcBT06, joined me on my journey to bring my September-old inside joke to life: banding together people from Reddit and heading down to Barton via my unofficial healing-in-the-dark club.

We departed by 7:20PM and made our way over to Barton Street West, from where we continued down Barton Street East and the end of Barton Street (in general?). Unlike the previous walks, even the Sam Lawrence Park-turned-detoured adventure one (with u/PrestigiousPilot8343 👀), this trip consisted of a couple breaks and refueling moments. One of the pit stops was at a McDonald's, and we also detoured to a drive test centre to fuel another joke. I don’t often take breaks and prefer exploring more natural sights, so this was rather challenging for me.

Instead of a thrilling expedition, this was more so a test of perseverance and endurance, especially with my daily walks set in place lol. We did unfortunately lose u/PrestigiousPilot8343—who initially wanted to detour to a random park as well—by the time we arrived at the end of Barton Street East. So I also began questioning my life choices, but much to my surprise, u/MarcBT06 insisted on continuing to the very end and reignited my competitive spirit once more. So did we both back down? Absolutely not. From being worried about dragging us down, u/MarcBT06 became the reason why this expedition was successful in the first place. We arrived at the beginning of Barton Street West at 8:37PM, the end of Barton Street East at 12:04AM, and the end of Barton Street altogether at 2:30AM. Since the earliest bus was going to arrive at 5:43AM, we decided to uber back and finally arrived back on campus at 3:10AM.

Unfortunately ran into a mishap with Strava, in which it was paused during one of the mini-breaks and didn’t track the stats of the remaining 30 minutes of the walk. On top of that, neither did we remember to take commemorative pictures, so I am slightly disappointed, but this truly pushed our limits in the moment. I suppose I genuinely wasn’t as prepared for my own planned expedition since I genuinely wasn’t expecting to walk down the entire street.

u/Vegetable-Anybody112 has been challenging me to walk to UofT. Who knows, maybe that too, will come true one day. After all, it does start off as a joke.

Discussion I think more of campus should be car free.

Id like to start of and say, the currently car free zones arent even car free. People are constantly driving down these roads as it saves people time in traffic and we dont actually punish drivers for going into these roads.

Now I understand we have several spots for parking on campus. Many of these places are on the outskirts of the campus with small adjustments can be entered/exited from outside of campus. Currently cars need to enter the center of campus in order to use these parking spots. If we were to allow entering and exiting those parking lots from outside of campus, we can close off several streets to be bus/campus veliches only. Many places are looking into reclaiming roads and school campuses are a great place for them to occur especially when there are plenty of parking spots on the outskirts of campus we can turn central campus into a pedestrian only + bus/campus vehicles.

Admissions Any chance of acceptance?

Hey guys😊,

I wanted to honestly enquire to those currently applying or who’ve already been accepted or current students of Mac. I’ve applied to the Level III accelerated nursing program at McMaster. I currently have an 80% average (hoping to get it up to 85% this semester, with a 3rd quartile Casper score. A lot of posts suggest Mac only accepts in the 90s but the level 3 program admissions minimum is a 75% unlike the 4 year level 1 program of 85%. I have all of the required university anatomy/physiology, physiology, chemistry and biology courses as required. Do I have a chance or should I make other plans? I move to Hamilton because I really wanted to get into Mac. Keep me posted guys. I’d love your feedback😊

Question Courses offered for exchangers coming into McMaster in the fall semester

Thumbnail
eng.mcmaster.ca
5 Upvotes

I'm currently studying Electrical Engineering in Singapore, and I will be exchanging in McMaster in the upcoming fall semester. I was wondering if the courses offered in each semester are fixed every year, or can I take any course in any semester? For example, I'm looking to take ELECENG 2EI4 and ELECENG 2FH4 in the upcoming Fall 2025 semester. However, according to this site : https://www.eng.mcmaster.ca/ece/courses/?filter-search=2ei4&filter-degree-option=#course-listing__filter , It states that 2EI4 is offered in Winter 2025, but nothing about Fall 2025. I'm unsure about whether its not updated yet, or that this course is only offered in the Winter semester every year. According to the timetable website, https://mytimetable.mcmaster.ca/criteria.jsp , there is only record of 2EI4 in Winter 2025 sem, and none in Fall 2024. Does this mean that this course is exclusively for Winter sem? Any help would be appreciated, please do drop any links that will be useful for me to map my courses in McMaster (for electrical engineering). I'm very excited to explore North America and school in McMaster!
